Pellet sorting part 3 - head sizing 

Dave, The reason I haven't shot groups during this series is due to the lack of a controlled environment. If I had a locking gun rest and an indoor range, I would have shot groups for each step (I hope that changes sometime this year). I think both the shooter and environmental variables can erase such minor changes pretty easily. But if you think about it, with each step I'm making the pellets more consistent to one another. So, theoretically, there must be an improvement in consistency down range. Would you agree?

No, it's based off of whatever size is the most consistent throughout the tin (whichever one there is the most of).

It's a good suggestion and it has crossed my mind. But, do you think tumbling them would take off too much material? I mean, I'm sizing down to the hundredth of a MM already and I've noticed a significant accuracy difference in pellets that are 1/100th too small. Also, I'd have to go back to the washing phase again afterwards.

It definitely could take off too much im sure.Especially if left in tumbler for too long.It just came to mind after watching this video and other vids showing close ups of the pellets showing rough edges and pitting im guessing from casting

Just out of curiosity, has anyone played around with sizing pellets that have heads that are larger than optimum? I'm planning to build my own pellet gauge / swage after I work out what size heads my .25 likes. I like to tinker so I'm looking forward to see if it has any effect to the larger diameter pellets. Ahh, the things we do to eliminate 'fliers'....

larger head pellets can be very difficult to find. I recently found some 5.54 (.22) and bought about 1/2 case, on the spot! I've never seen 6.36 offered (.25).

@@Atoyota25 I have thought of tumbling pellets also. I am not too happy with the rough finish on the pellets. Instead of sand, I would use some type of walnut husk or something like that. There are tumblers for sale on Amazon as well as various tumbling mediums. The key is how long to tumble them so you don't loose weight. Also, a strainer is needed that will not allow the pellets to fall through. Most of the strainers that are used are for separating the brass from the medium. Need a separator that has smaller openings. Also, I would make tumbling the very first step before washing so you don't have to wash twice. Just some thoughts I have had on this topic.

If I understand your question right.... Yes, Clean with soap and water, rinse, let dry. Then you can oil (lube) them if you want to. I'll be covering lubing pellets in the near future.
