Sorting pellets - Part 1 Washing & Drying

My method for sorting pellets for airguns. Air rifles can be picky about what they shoot. Once you find the ammo that your gun likes best, washing it can be one way to gain even more accuracy. This is only the first step in the process.

Good video Tom. One comment to viewers regarding the waste water created when washing pellets. If you have a septic tank where you live do not dump this water down your drain, as the lead will leach into the water supply. This isn’t an issue if you have city sewer, as the lead will be remove during the reclamation process.

Good video, thanks for sharing. I've been using a similar routine for years. Small point: the washing process removes the factory lube/graphite from the pellets so after sorting, either use them up fast or seal them in an airtight container or ziplock bag. Also, I put Napier Power Pellet lube on mine to reduce (re-)oxidation. Shoot safe & aim small, hit small :)

Great explanation of the washing and shorting process. I'm sure this video is going to help a great many folks looking for help with accuracy. Great video as always, great detail, very helpful.

Hi Tom. Thanks for this video. I'll directly have a look at the second one. Just a tip to try : Ultrasonic cleaning. It's really powerful and does absolutely not damage the pellets.

my ultrasonic cleaner both on it's 30w and 50w setting started pitting and "disintegrating" my pellets after 5 or 10 minutes :(

1050 pellets X 3 minutes a pellet = 52 1/2 HOURS! Wow! that's a perfectionist for sure.
@Atoyota25
@Atoyota25 7 лет назад
Yes and no... I won't spend 3 minutes on all 1050. I only spend that amount of time on the ones that make it through the entire process. Unfortunately, that number is much much lower. Somewhere in the area of 10-20% :)

And u are starting with good pellets. I'm using stuff "off the shelf" I get enuff slang to make half a tin of pellets man. My trouble is ive got a couple break barrels so I cant use soap much. Cant really lubricate my pellets cause break barrels have oil internal

Thanx, Tom informative video as usual. Living in northern California it's hot in the summer. I pretty much wash as you do drying? I will spread 3 tins on a towel in the garage that's 110 plus, leave them overnight then transfer to a dry towel and roll them around, leave them another day. Then I put them in a colander and blow them off with no heat. I can't wait to see what you do next! 3 minutes a pellet! WOW

It is awesome that by hand work the pellets can be filtered to boost accuracy by a large amount. But I fear I will start with .22LR since for them you can really buy premium bullets (a model that your barrel likes) which can be used when required. I am apalled by how bad the QC is even with 'the best' pellet manufacturer.

Demand goes up, production rate goes up, and QC goes down. It's a common occurrence, unfortunately.

@@Atoyota25 Does a company make precision-machined pellets for competition. I would think if having pellets that are exactly the same is what you want in competition there would be a market for pellets that are machined to perfect tolerances and weights.

would you use an ultra sonic cleaner

I have not used one but, I have heard of others that use them. I would try it if I had access and see if my rifle liked the pellets or not afterwards.
