England in the early 7th century is seeing rapid changes in society, with the arrival of Gregorian missionaries in 597 many Saxon kingdoms begin their conversion to Christianity.
But in the Kingdom of Mercia under the rule of Penda, a great Pagan king and staunch defender of the old beliefs, a major clash of world views is about to erupt. For a few decades in the beginning of the 7th century much of England and Wales is a battle ground between Christians and Pagans.

Penda the king killer, he probably having Welsh family connections. A wily and cunning commander and leader of men, along with the Welsh king Cadwallon himself a fearsome warrior burning with revenge of his people against the English, they made a deadly combination. Penda's retinue was a strange gathering of various warriors, both Christian and pagan, Welsh, Mercians, mercenaries from Wessex, and probably cavalrymen from Strathclyde seeing an opportunity to reduce Northumbria's sway over them. I do believe the Staffordshire hoard is Penda's plunder from the Northumbrians, possibly from one of their kings who Penda slew.
