PENNSYLVANIA: What was the Whiskey Rebellion?

What was the "Whiskey Rebellion"--and what accounts for the federal government's response to it? Might we consider the "Rebellion" a final episode of the American Revolution? After all, weren't these western farmers fighting for the same freedom from distant, corrupt taxation that the revolutionaries had once opposed?

What a fascinating look at early america, and truly amazing that we had an army of federal bondholders destroy the dreams of smallfolk- shows how important it is these days to guard ourselves against such concentrations of capital.

1) The center of the Whiskey Rebellion was not Pittsburgh, but Greensburg 46 miles ESE of Pittsburgh. 2) The rebels signed "Covenants" because they were mostly Ulster Scots, and this law was seen as a direct religious and racial attack upon Scots-Irish Presbyterians by English Anglicans. 3) Any discussion of the Rebellion without mention of Robert Morris is highly suspect. Morris was the largest holder of US Revolutionary War debt, and used this leverage to force the law upon Hamilton under threat of default, and later used the outcome to purchase vast tracts of land seized from the rebels at rock bottom prices. His name was the subject of many rebel slogans. 4) The extraction of loyalty oaths, despite being prima facia unconstitutional, was a precedent that was illegally continued right up to the early 1950s. 5) The US Constitution gives Congress ultimate authority over interstate commerce, including taxes on goods transported across state lines, but NOT over taxes on goods produced and consumed entirely within one state. This illegal overreach continues to be allowed by corrupt courts to this day.

Yeah but his backdrop wouldn’t look nearly as good if he went to greensburg 😂

The "law" is unjust, immoral, impractical. It creates chaos, NOT order. For example, it creates a social problem not resolved in practice or theory, e.g., who will enforce the law against the law enforcers? LEOs, govt., exempt themselves in practice, yet deny it. They all lie, defraud, extort. Why is this a universal problem worldwide? There is only one political paradigm: the initiation of force, threat. A non-violent voluntary govt. is not allowed to compete. We are told, "This is for the common good, national security." But, no proof is offered, no experimentation, just the status quo that benefits a few (short term) at the expense of the many.

Under rated comment here. The war between the Ulster Scots and the English Anglicans would rear its ugly head multiple times throughout history, including some facets of the American Civil War where many Ulster Scots lived in the South and fought against the English in the North.

@@BillGreenAZ Thank you for the compliment. A little known fact of American history is that the Homestead Strike of 1892 was less about union busting, and more about the long running war between the Ulster Scots of Pittsburgh and the Molly Maguires.

@@archenema6792 You should write a book. Or perhaps produce some videos on history.

Just found your channel. I’m from Pittsburgh and it was awesome to see your most recent video be here! Yinzers still hate federal authority and love to drink. We still have that blue collar spirit almost 250 years later. I hope you enjoyed our city.

Our country basically started out as a p#ssing contest between the Hamiltonian Federalists who wanted to create an unaccountable empire much like the one they just left and the Jeffersonian's who favored a weak central government where a new American aristocracy could exploit that weakness to create their own personal fiefdoms. Even removing all of the racial and ethnic problems that were often exploited, it's a damned wonder this country managed to even make it 83 years without a major civil war. Of course neither vision particularly benefited the common folk, like those Pennsylvania farmers. Just like our current American reality is not geared towards the common man having a fair shake.

I think the reason the governor didn’t do anything is twofold. One, I don’t think he wanted to get in the way of a federal response so early in the constitution’s history. Two, and maybe more importantly, Pennsylvania was at war with Connecticut at the time and it was seen as a bigger deal.
