Not too long ago I posted a video of a Penrith/SUEZ recycling truck, being one of many brand new machines that kicked off a new collection contract in July this year. Whilst it’s cool to see a fresh fleet hit the streets of this Western Sydney council, it’s also quite standard and boring compared to the equipment which once rolled through the streets of Penrith. As such I put a few days aside and succeeded with getting some old trucks in front of the camera before they were retired, leaving me with plenty of Penrith action to share in future! A truck I captured stars in this upload, being 1 of 10 original 2007 Superior Pak Ivecos which were deployed ages ago. A lot of the trucks were looking quite worse for wear towards the end, and 055 here was no exception, however regardless of the state of mechanical condition and how it looked, it was still getting the bins emptied at a good pace. As you’ll hear in the video if you pump up the volume, this beast still sounded damn good too, totally awesome hearing that Cummins engine roaring through the open area.
It was a Tuesday afternoon when I made a second visit to the newer suburb of Jordan Springs, and with some good luck on my side, discovered this green bodied side loader returning from the tip to knock over the final streets for the shift. Even better it was steered by a driver I’ve known for a while, many thanks to him for helping make this happen! As per the video title, this features the Penrith FOGO collection, which for those not familiar with the modern acronym, abbreviates “food organics and garden organics”. To provide some background on this service, when SITA first commenced the Penrith contract, households had a 240L bin emptied weekly for garbage and garden waste mixed in together. A couple years later households started using separate red and green lidded bins for residual waste and food/garden organics respectively, with dry residual garbage collected fortnightly and mixed organics collected weekly. Originally one of the first Aussie councils to introduce the service, Penrith remains the first and only council in Sydney with a FOGO pickup.
