Hey there, friends and neighbours. This lesson is the second in a new series about mastering the pentatonic scale. In it, I'll show you my method of accessing the pentatonic scale anywhere on the fretboard. If you've been struggling with how to use the pentatonic scale, this lesson is for you.
LET'S TAKE IT TO THE BASS!

I know this is more, or supposed to be more for beginners, but as long as I've been playing and learning, you still opened my eyes to something I've never quite added up before. You truly are an amazing teacher/player. Thank you Mr. Brown!

Mr,Rich Brown, you are absolutely one of if not the best teacher/ tutor I've come across on any of these social media platforms, I've been playing bass and also 6 string from a very early age, I first picked up a guitar in church in Jamaica at the age of 7 years old I am now in my mid 60's, I only wish I had known you many years ago, I told my 17 year old son that apart from what I show you don't listen to any one else on you tube apart from yourself.. you are the man Rich, Blessings to you for sharing your unbelievable talent and most valuable knowledge.. keep up your good works..God Bless. From a reggae bassist.😂

Hey rich, after watching the first video of your playlist on bass for beginners, I gotta say; you’re pretty damn good. I turn 21 next week, and I pray I get my first bass until then. P.S: I highly recommend taking a look at the persona 5 ost, it’ll be my main inspiration for acid jazz and or jazz in general. It’s also a soundtrack from a renowned video game series.

Leave it to Rich......I thought, no.....not another pentatonic excercise video.... but the dividing fret and pairs idea gives me another way of seeing the scale/pattern. No, I've never seen that idea. Cheers to the Brown method.

I'm really enjoying your no-nonsense approach Rich. I have been playing bass for 50+ years. but playing PROPERLY not nearly as long. Even though my mother taught me how to read music when I was a teen, music theory later in life was the more important aspect for me. Thanks for the invaluable lessons Rich. Cheers from Utah

Yes I get it. Thanks for the info and of a new way of seeing the scales.👀 I guess seeing you break it all down into just "Thinking" of it as 2 root notes the relative Maj/min of any key is such a great way take a bite instead trying to eat it all at once has been a😮 Wow moment. Hope there is more to come. ✌️

This is fun stuff, Rich. I've been thinking about it since the previous video and here's something I discovered on my 5 string. All 5 notes of the pentatonic scale are on one fret starting with the 3rd. The strings are tuned in fourths. So, in C pentatonic the 3rd is E. On a 5 string E is on the 5th fret. Stay on the 5th fret and the pentatonic scale is in fourths on each successive string, E, A, D, G, C - 3, 6, 2, 5, 1. This pattern is repeated on other frets and moves to the adjacent lower fret on the 3rd. Minor is the same pattern, it just starts on the 6th. Now I can add your dividing line and think of this one fret of notes as being separated by 5ths (one string apart) and octaves (two strings apart).

Hey Rich, thank you for this great lesson and the vibe you bring to teaching bass. Just wanted to point out that there is no dividing line on the first position of C Major pentatonic starting on the E string. I'm guessing 5 string players are finding this "issue" in more instances.. Anyway gonna practice this in various keys and perhaps mixing "lines" up and down the fretboard. Can't wait for part 3!! Cheers!!

Awesome Lesson. I thought I would check out a couple more of your videos before I asked this question, thinking you may have answered it with this shape for the Pentatonic. Well here was the question... "I'm Familiar with the minor and major Pentatonic on lead guitar up and down the neck with the same Shape and wanted to pick up the Bass from that FOUNDATION and you smacked the music theory Like a Bass player ! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Thanks Again P.S. I have a 4 String but I am digging that Melodic 5 String. Is there some phrases that work with both 4 and 5 string or is 5 just a different Ax all together due to the tuning?" The question still stands after this video, but it was a step closer to having an Ah Hah moment. All the videos were great but I Really enjoyed this one. Wish you had split the red sea on the other 2 shapes. Ha Ha Faith without works is Dead. Amen

Hello. Thanks for your time and effort in conveying the lesson to your audience. I believe I am slower in my ability to grasp the information. i may need the beginner, beginner group. my vision isn't very good. Have you tried videoing from different angle's i.e. angling the camera so the audience view would be from your right to the fretboard. i think that the way you mute the un-played strings makes it difficult for me to distinguish whice note is fretted and vice-versa.

What's hard for me is to note down 2 pentatonic minor or major scales in one key lol. I know you can do that but it's hard sometimes to see when an opportunity is open to switch to a different one in the same key. Maybe it's just memorization issues idk. I do use a phone these days lol. Confuses me though. When I solo, I can do one lol. I been working with the kumoi scale. Another pentatonic phrygian. 1, b2, 4, 5, b6. You'll get a Japanese samurai feeling lol. Not much you can do with it when it comes to being unique but it does go good over a Byzantine chord progression for some darkness. Or just straight up phrygian chords for a Japanese touch. It's interesting. Jazz or not though, you should still get a unique Japanese sound.

wow Rich!! You groove in all dimensions! 🙂 I do love the pentatonic scale approarch a lot, BUT, for decades I'm fond of the following pentatonic scale (Mahavishnu): root, major 3, 4, 5 flat 7. Could you elaborate on how to organize this scale on the bass? The fingering in particular in various shapes? Love, peace and admiration from The Netherlands!!

Thanks brother, but it would be great if you could make a video where you show people that there is a variety of pentatonic scales out there to play! Related to the scales that can be made on the concert harp by rising or lowering some of the 7 diatonic notes >> Alice Coltrane!
