I think people forget to give props to Scott on songs like this. He sang all those juicy bass notes since Matt had the lead. Scott’s vocal range is RIDIC!! He can sing as low as Matt/Avi and super high in his falsetto. He’s the most versatile person in the group. Even though Mitch is still my FAV! :-)

You think Kirstie looks good here? To quote Bachman Turner Overdrive, "Bbbbbaby you ain't seen nothin' yet." Meanwhile, Christmas approaches: PTX "Carol of the Bells", or "Little Drummer Boy". Oh, and "Twelve Days of Christmas", and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen". And "Joyful Joyful" live from last year's "Evergreen" tour, or this year's "A Christmas Spectacular".

Great reaction! How impressive is it that Scott sings the bass line in this because Matt is singing the solo?! They all have crazy ranges - Scott has a six-octave range for example, Mitch the same. Matt can sing incredibly high too, as can Kevin. If you go back in PTX time you'll find that it isn't always Scott who sings the lead - it's often Mitch or Kirstie.

As for why Scott is so often the lead singer, Scott is a baritone, with a range that extends into the bass range on the low end, and the tenor range on the upper end. This gives him an ideal voice for usually taking the lead - right in the middle of the male range. Also, there's a bit of historical stuff going on. When they appeared on _The Sing-Off,_ at the very beginning of their careers (Mitch had to skip his high school graduation ceremony to make it to the audition for _The Sing-Off,_ which shows you just how young they were) the producers were apparently terrified that the facts that Mitch and Scott are gay would come out on their "family-friendly" show. Anyway, they were afraid that if Mitch were allowed to display his high range it would lead to questions about his sexual orientation, so they tried to suppress Mitch. One of the ways they did that was to institute a rule that each band on _The Sing-Off_ had to designate one singer who would be their lead singer in *all* their performances, a rule that applied only to that one season of _The Sing-Off._ And then they told Pentatonix that their lead had to be Scott, because they weren't afraid that Scott's baritone would raise any questions. (It was quite stupid, really. If Scott can be both gay and baritone that should make it obvious that Mitch being a counter tenor has nothing to do with his being gay, but I guess bigotry will do that to you. And when Mitch finally *did* deliver the first ever Mitch slap, did Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men [one of the judges] say "Mitch, are you gay?!" in the same tone of voice as Fred Savage in _The Princess Bride_ saying "Is this a kissing book?" No, he said "I'm'a tell you man, you have one of the prettiest voices I have ever heard in my life!") Anyway, this set a bit of a precedent of Scott being the lead singer, and since Pentatonix was Scott's big idea in the first place he's also the one who tends to do introductions and explanations at their concerts so it kind of all goes together. However, one of the things Pentatonix is known for is that they do whatever serves the music best, and they make sure that they cover or write songs in which the best lead will be someone other than Scott. "The Prayer" has two leads, Mitch and Scott, and I put Mitch first because he's the primary lead in that one. In "Seasons of Love" it's Kirstin. In "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" it's Matt. And since it's difficult for Kevin to sing lead while also being the entire percussion section, their concerts include extended cello demonstrations by him - look for a live performance of "Kevin's Fifth" when you get a chance. I like the one from Owensboro Kentucky, which is Kevin's home town. They also do songs where everyone can solo: "Bohemian Rhapsody" (everyone except Kevin), "Imagine" (everyone *including* Kevin), "The Twelve Days of Christmas" (also everyone including Kevin), "Sound of Silence" (everyone except Kevin), "Hallelujah" (everyone except Kevin)....

All the Pentatonix members except Kevin did children's theater productions when they were kids. Scott, Kirstie and Mitch were all in the Dallas, Texas metro area, and I think Matt was in Baltimore (his dad was a church music leader). Scott, Kirstie and Matt all ended up in the same high school where they first started making trio arrangements of pop songs.

This song is such a perfect vehicle for Matt's voice, and also his fun-loving personality. Scott is holding down the bass line while Matt is taking the lead. No worries that you prefer another rendition. We are all entitled to our opinion and individual taste. That's what makes this world so fun and interesting. Merry Christmas from Canada.

Matt is not just the newest member of Pentatonix, he's also the youngest, and I've been told that the bass voice takes longer to come into its full range than other voices. The first PTX live performance of "Hallelujah" that I found that was recorded after Avi left, had Scott singing both the first and second verses; Matt did only the bass harmony line, which I found disappointing. I knew Matt was capable of singing the second verse - the arrangement didn't even include Avi's basso profundo low notes - so why didn't they let Matt sing it? Then I heard a later live recording of "Hallelujah," and I understood. In that recording Matt sang the second verse, but it *wasn't* an arrangement I'd heard before. The arrangement Avi sang was written specifically for Avi's voice, and even though Matt *could* sing that arrangement, Pentatonix wanted Matt to have his own arrangement, something that would work best with his voice. Then, on November 20, 2022, I went to my first ever Pentatonix concert in Denver. They sang "Hallelujah" early in the evening, when all their voices were fresh, and the arrangement of the second verse was again different. This time Matt's lowest note in "Hallelujah" was as low as anything I've ever heard from Avi - true basso profundo, blowing-out-speakers low - and his highest note was in the *tenor* range. Avi regularly sings in the baritone range, but tenor? Never. I've heard "Hallelujah" in their live feed from the Hollywood Bowl at the beginning of the same tour, but there it was the last song they sang, and all their voices were tired - Matt didn't attempt that low note, though his highest note was still higher than anything Avi can manage. So I can't point you to any recording that will validate my observation, and I don't claim to have a trained ear, so I could be wrong, but I don't think I am. Matt's current range encompasses Avi's entire range and goes beyond it, and I suspect that it will continue to increase for the next year or two. I understand the nostalgia some of us have for Avi; he was the first additional person the trio invited to join Pentatonix, and he stuck with them during the hard times, after they lost the recording contract they'd "won" on _The Sing-Off._ And there's no denying the beauty of his voice. But at this point I think that when Pentatonix got Matt to replace Avi they traded up. Matt is spectacular.

For different leads than Scott, try Bohemian Rhapsody, Carol Of The Bells, Say Something, and the originals Love Again and Be My Eyes. Matt is also great in Sound Of Silence and Mad World although Scott probably has the greater lead. Mary Did You Know is lovely with Scott maybe taking the greater lead.

Matt has been their bass since October 2017. He is amazing. As you watch more Pentatonix videos you will see that different members sing leads depending upon what is needed to best serve the songs. They never let egos get in the way. They do what is best for the songs.

Also in their live concerts they make sure that the songs they do have a mix of leads. They always make sure there are a couple songs with Kevin as the focal on his cello (or even just a solo celloboxing piece) & they have a time where Kevin & Matt come out to do a couple songs without the other 3. Sometimes they even have songs that are 5-part harmony through most of the song, so everyone gets to share the glory for all the things they bring to the group, not just what their main role is. They want the fans to appreciate how it really takes teamwork for any song.

It’s true that Matt doesn’t lead often, although on the new album he has a number of leads. I think Scott leads more than the others, but Mitch and Kirstie have a lot of leads as well. A few good Kirstie leads are Rather Be, Seasons of Love (live version) and Few of my Favorite things. Mitch has a lot of amazing leads as well.

Matt was nervous because this was his first featured song he led. Hint: Pentatonix would not exist without Scott as he grabbed his two best friends from high school to enter the NBC "sing-off" show. When they found out it had to be a minimum of 5 people without instruments. Avi is credited as a friend of a friend, but that friend is Ben Brum who Scott met at USC and talked kiki ed Scott into the competition. Ben also worked on the NBC "sing-off" show. Scott found Kevin through RU-vid video and covered half the cost to get Kevin to Los Angeles. Scott also created the all Female accapell group Citizen Queen and works with kids accapella also. If it's a cover Scott often leads, but if it's an original, that's who leads. Most importantly, every thing they do is in 100% agreement or they just don't do it. Avi leads in Imagine, Mitch leads Carol of the Bells, Kirstie leads on songs she wrote, "Be My Eyes" and "Love Me When I Don't"
@KaireemReactions
@KaireemReactions Год назад
That makes a lot more sense now. Technically he founded the group so it make sense for him to be in lead. As long as they are all happy and in agreement then there’s nothing wrong. Because I’m the outsider I’ve always wonder why does he lead all the time. Thanks for clarifying 😁
@cranberrysauce61
@cranberrysauce61 Год назад
@@KaireemReactions yeah, plus scott just has a wide range and a very versatile and powerful voice, so he can more naturally fit the original sound quality of the covered singer. so when it comes picking who to sing the lead, scott's voice just more often than not fits the lead best. and along with the sing-off, im pretty sure the produces of the show wanted a 'lead/face' of the group and scott just made the most sense at the time, as he was (at least in my opinion) the most outspoken/outgoing, as mitch and kirstin where still in a shy phase at the start, while avi and kevin where new to the group.

I don't like this song in general but PTX rocks it. ❤. One thing I love about the group is that they All do what is best for the song and take turns in the spotlight. No one is the lead singer in all songs. Matt is awesome in this and it showcases his warm bass mastery. They also do so many genres there is something for everyone.

Since Matt is the lead singer in this song (and does fantastic at it!), and he is the bass, Scott takes over singing the bass line for the entire song, and does a pretty amazing job! EDIT: Hopefully no one gives you any grief over your preferences. I try not to compare groups when they've both done the same song - each will be amazing in their own way. But I usually do have preferences, and I'll certainly respect yours - it's your own opinion, and it isn't right or wrong, it's just yours.

Scott is not leading because the bass line you hear is him. Whenever Matt here (or Avi, when he used to be in the group early on) sings lead, Scott ALWAYS takes over bass duties. He's very talented inn that respect.
