In 1965, Curtis wrote "People Get Ready" for The Impressions, which was ranked at no. 24 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The song received numerous other awards; it was included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's "500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll",[10] and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. This video is from Night Music episode 113. If anyone is interested here is the link to 10 hours+ of audio only music from the 1988-1989 Sunday night episodes. Thanks to my dad who recorded many of the episodes on SLP VHS. Terrible video quality but the audio was PCM stereo. I recorded 7 cassettes from the VHS tapes and many years later digitized them to mp3 audio. Link is here: archive.org/de...

I love Curtis Mayfield and his music. A great live TV rendition but I agree on the rolling credit distraction. I also noticed that Curtis must have forgotten about David Sanborn's solo right after the modulation as he began to sing the next verse, "There ain't no room..." (1:35) Sanborn graciously pulled back but then Mayfield, catching himself, yielded back to Sanborn. Skillfully done and Sanborn got to play his soulful solo. Beautiful.

This is absolutely 💯 generational, You simply can't improve perfection, Taylor is amazing as is David Lindley, he was much loved by my friends in the '70's- if memory serves he played on many LP'S such as Jackson Browne ,Linda Ronstadt, many others 💙

Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions has to be angels in disguise. A song that well put together and sung so beautifully on a track. A barber teacher got me hooked on these guys when I was 24. Now being 31 that song is very needed in my life. When I’m down and out I just put it on and zone out. Thinking of what it would be like to board that train and where would I go with people I never knew before. Probably would have the best time of my life and never look back 😢! Him and his group always made the best uplifting music. #RIPCurtisMayfield

Just heard a David Lindey interview after his passing. He related this date as a fond memory. Brought in that afternoon, little rehearsal. Presumably after Mr. Sanborns solo and a verse Mr. Mayfield turns to Lindley and says “play the solo” quiet like. Lindley said it was a great solo and great moment. But we got credits instead.
@99muddy99
@99muddy99 Год назад
Thanks, Scott. That was good background. I thought it might have been a somewhat impromptu performance. Lindley's opening to the song is too loud, which is easily done when there isn't a proper sound check (perhaps it's that way on YT only, or perhaps it was the mixing). I agree with some who think the sax solo had too much vigour, but I also agree with those who think it was good. He certainly goes for his solo, but what else was he supposed to do--play it blandly? I don't agree with those who dislike Taylor Dane. I barely know her music, but she sang sympathetically, with feeling and restraint; she felt it. She didn't detract from Curtis; she added yin to his yang. In this video, we have the privilege of listening to one of the most beautiful, singular voices (and guitars) of Soul music, singing one of the great peans, which he also wrote. Curtis Mayfield was Great. It's understandable that people don't want to be distracted--they want pure Curtis. I'm grateful to be able to see a hero perform.
