If someone was going to propose to me I don't think I'd want a diamond - they're ridiculously overpriced compared to actual market value (thanks, DeBeers...) and everyone seems to have them. My mum has a pink sapphire with small diamonds on either side, and my nana's engagement ring (that I now have) is a blue sapphire with three tiny diamonds (maybe even diamond chips?) on either side. They're both gorgeous, and much more like what I would prefer.

I'd prefer conflict free diamond substitutes than diamonds. Diamonds, even when "conflict free", are just a myth of marketing, their prices are artificially jacked up and the whole history is fraught.

I feel like they're shaming cheaper rings or rings that "pretend" to look expensive. It doesn't have to be expensive or even a diamond to be special. It's the individual or couple's preference to their style and budget. Spending even $100-1000 on an engagement ring is a lot and still special for some people.

I took a couple classes years ago from a professional jewelry designer/wax carver and she showed us time and time again that most people cannot tell between moissanite and diamonds. There are tons of videos on RU-vid showing actual jewelers not being able to tell. They're way cheaper! It is all I've bought since!

I honestly do not believe that any diamonds are not conflict diamonds. Rings cost so much because of society's constant marketing of diamonds, regardless of how worthless they are. It started in the 40s or something because the deBeers company said "How are we gonna sell all these gems? How about we say 'diamonds are forever' and pressure people t engage with them?" This company created their own market---and it worked! A huge success, obviously, but seriously ridiculous that people have this knowledge and still chose to follow the tradition.

Hell my wedding ring set was $228, ha and I was given a $1,000 budget...the diamond is 1.5 ct and yes it's real. It also has 14 k rose gold...which just essentially means it has a certain amount of copper mixed in with the gold to give its rose gold appearance. It's so sparkly and I get compliments on it all the time 😁

my wedding rings are silver with CZ. People always compliment them. CZ is super shiny, and both cost about $60! I think get whatever makes you happy. You can even get wooden rings now!

I get that diamonds are pretty, but thier one of the most common gems. I prefer the precious stones (Ruby, Sapphire, Garnet, etc). I also adore Opal and Alexandrite

For those who commented on buying gold band with precious gems, yes they hold better market value. But, in terms of durability, a metal alloy band with diamond will last for generations. The problem with gold ring is that it is too malleable, often times the gem it holds will come off and drop on the floor. The gem might be scratched(low mohs) or even cracked, depending on how clumsy you are, so it's a good idea to buy something that is idiot proof. Lastly, the hexoctahedral shape makes it good at reflecting and refracting light inside it. This makes diamond glitter like a disco ball. The better the cut, the more bounces.So, get your SO an everlasting ring that holds more sentimental value than what it is worth.

My fiance and I chose to go with more affordable rings and bands, and more affordable gems as well (not a big fan of diamonds anyways). There are stunning genuine rings out there that won't cost a lot. I mean if you want spend a small fortune go ahead, we just prefer to put that money towards a future house and travel and everything else.

I HIGHLY recommend researching Moissanite before going into debt for a diamond. Moissanite is one of the best alternatives for wedding rings. Even fancy colored gemstones are better than diamond. . .

I thought with the engagement ring is that it's a security of sorts. Since gems and precious metals only appreciate over time, if anything were to come up (i.e. The family fell on hard times), the most logical thing to do would be sell ones jewelry since that's something one could easily pawn and replace later. If that's the case then a diamond ring is a horrible idea since the value is already small. I know a lot of guys though that would never let their wife sell their rings.
