Perfect Vodka Martini Cocktail Recipe 

Interesting note on James Bond: In the early movies and books he ordered what was apparently a gin martini and only later ordered vodka martinis. What's funny is that you shouldn't shake a gin martini because it bruises the flavor of the gin and makes a weak drink because it also causes the ice to chip, this watering down the drink. So, in other words, he orders a weak drink and is snooty about it, lol.

This, so much. I've got a couple of bottles of Belvedere and it's the best vodka I've ever had. It certainly puts Smirnoff to shame.

I got a question when somebody asks you for a martini do you serve them gin or vodka from the speed rack automatically or do they always get the more expensive gin or vodka? I am having trouble when to appropriately use the speed rack liquor and the premium liquor.

@hasablad69 There are many different stories about where the name martini came from. I do agree that in certain countries in Europe that one has to be careful when ordering a martini because they may get the a glass of Martini and Rossi Vermouth instead of a martini made with gin or vodka. What is your oppinion about Russian Standard vodka (Руский Стандарт)?Is vodka Finlandia better>? Im frm Bulgaria (Europe) so id appreciate some advice on good vodka for about 7-15 Euro :) (in BG things are kinda cheaper)

The amount of dry vermouth varies with the customer. Dry vermouth adds character to the drink but many Americans haven't acquired a taste for it and don't like it.

I used a 5 oz. glass. Martini glasses come in many different sizes. To make a double Martini double the measurements and be sure you use a very big glass.

@jtiano unfortunately indonesia prohibits bars.

vermouth should be stirred prior to vodka then strain 50% of dilution away add vodka and more ice and flamed lemon peel then stir both ways for 10 seconds strain over a chilled martini glass and then rim and garnish. that is how you make a classic vodka martini with a twist.

@AK410 Elmanfre was referring to Martini & Rossi vermouth. Also, this is not a "wet" martini. In fact, it's not even a martini. A martini is always made with gin. Period. This is called a kangaroo kicker. In The Savoy Cocktail Book (c. 1930) Harry Craddock describes a dry martini as "1/3 French Vermouth, 2/3 Dry Gin." The current pussification of martinis has led to the inclusion of decreasing amounts of vermouth, because most bars stock bad (or oxidized) vermouth.

Indeed. So a vodka-gin martini, which shaken as he requested watered down the drink and bruised the flavor of the gin still weakening it. The drink was also made in a deep champagne goblet instead of a classic cocktail/martini glass.

And if we want it shaken not stirred, how do we do ? =)

I found that if you first shake the ice alone, you can bust it up a bit without bruising the gin and you'll also get some little glaciers floating on top of your gin. It doesnt seem to weaken it at all. It sucks that most bartenders are only good at shooting coke into a glass with a shot of Crown... then again I am in Texas.

Always ask the customer what type of martini they want gin or vodka. You can also ask if they want a premium gin or vodka. Premium are more expensive, and it's advisable to ask.

If you like vodka martini, this is a good way to make it.

Grey Goose sux, try Kettle One. Great flavor, smooth with just the right bite. Pour a little on the rocks you'll see what I mean. Really though gin should be used in a martini!!

I think Pravda vodka is the smoothest vodka there is out there at the moment.

It's all a matter of personal taste.

I prefer to use Belvedere vokda in my cocktails, especially cosmo's as their flavours are naturally macerated.

Nothing is wrong with Smirnoff!! A lot of people just follow the fallacious thinking that more expensive = better quality. Smirnoff is the best "big name" vodka, in my opinion. The fact that it also has a pretty low price tag is the icing on the cake.

Let your nose and your taste be your guide. Vodka is similar to wine or beer in that it depends on what the person that drinks prefers. In recent blind tasting test with professional testers the least expensive vodka was judged to be the best tasting.

It all depends on the customer and how 'dry' they want it. As for a manhattan, I don't know of any manhattan recipes that call for as little vermouth as a martini does.

The title and recipe is to show people how to make a great vodka martini. I have never heard of the recipe a perfect martini using both types of vermouth. There is a perfect Manhattan that uses both, and that's a whiskey based cocktail. I doubt very few people would enjoy a vodka martini that uses both dry and sweet vermouth.

This is not a vodka-martini, this is a vodka-gallo.

@jtiano Yeah BUT the MARTINI came from the name of the Vermouth, and that would be nothing but MARTINI AND ROSSI's Vermouth. Logic. I know that i wasn't THERE when IT happened but from a former professional service bar bartender from LONDON that's my opinion. I don't make Martinis with anything else. You want to use Gallo? You want Noilly Prat? You're payin' the bill, bud', so your tastes are the ones that count.

My Vodka preference? FINLANDIA! I can only imagine that Grey Goose is over-hyped and therefore over-priced, i.e. VO Canadian Rye vis a vis Canadian Crown Royal (over-hyped ergo over-priced, but better? Not really.) Decent Canadian Vodka - Polar Ice but remember every-body KEEP YOUR VODKA IN THE FREEZER! ALWAYS!
