PERFECTION! Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 1 | Animation Breakdown 

This has been said so many times by many but I CANNOT stress enough that GOSSO CINEMA IS PEAK!

This level of creativity in anime is what brings me joy. To see directors put their spin on something to make it new and unique while also keeping the story intact is what i think the industry needs.

The level of character acting in this episode was crazy. I know they probably won't keep it up, but it was still impressive.

This episode felt more smoother than Saitama’s head.

Character acting ✅ Perfect horror vibe ✅ Great BG animation ✅ Great BGM✅ K1RO,KAI,kato and ideue as main animators ✅ GOSSO CINEMA!!!! Yes I'm ready for the Shibuya arc now

I'm glad jujutsu kaisen is getting the quality it deserves despite the rough schedule. I wish jigokuraku also got this quality but sacrifices are made.

Agree so hard this episode was among my favorites this year and a really good display of how Gosso being a director now is good(Sorry Park). What’s most impressive about this episode in my opinion is how the majority of the episode was anime only or changed from the manga to enhance the source material. Most of the haunted mansion was anime only, the basketball scene took place in a classroom in the manga, and Geto in the top of the hotel was changed from him being on the ground with Gojo. This is how you enhance the source material storywise and to allow for more interesting scenes that have symbolism.

Gosso saw how tight the schedule was and proceeded to add a 10min anime original scene. Also I really love how Gege is actually heavily involved in the production with writing Anime OG scenes and reviewing storyboards

Gosso really didn’t disappoint. Pure eyecandy from start to finish. I can’t wait to see the fight scenes and the rest of the season. The motion is so fluid, the 3D and 2D blending + compositing is fantastic, the sound design and character art, EVERYTHING is perfect or close to it. Glad to see my fav manga get done justice.

02:29 I feel like it's a use of a technique called 3D camera projection, basically what you do is take a illustration and project it on a 3D model, that gives you more feerdom in rotating one illustration and ofc the fire ground elements like chairs and boxes are 3D, this episode looked like CINEMA

Just wow! I mean I already liked how season 1 was animated, but I love this even more. The direction, the storyboarding was incredible. Simpler character designs, but more expression. Based on the trailer the action will also be extremely smooth and creative.

Impressive, I expected a lot from the first episode but not this amount of characther acting, this episode had more acting than the entire show, like when I think of jjk I think about the fight with chunky background.

I love when in sequence shown 4:52 when gojo is starting to become more serious with the talk he jumps form simplified to more detailed

5:13 omg the shot when gojo perfectly shoots the basketball and makes geto's hair swoosh around was sooo awesome a little touch not needed, but appreciated.

what a fun episode, i enjoyed every scene, so creative and unique, they perfectly captured the feeling of youth the beginning of the episode made hype to see how they will handle the horror and darker scenes

It doesn’t feel like the same show anymore tbh, some people might not like that but i think it’s a improvement so far…

The urahime run looked like something out of a ghibili movie

I was a little worried because the martial art focused action from park was amazing but this is just insane. Peak animation incoming. Also where do you look up the animators who are credited for episodes/shows?

As for the directorial work this specific episode gosso pulled a gosso cinema card just like ryu nakayana and yuichiro hayashi. These 3 people know how to give impressive content even with realistically tight schedules(ryu nakayana had a bit less worse of a schedule but still)

Gosso's work is never boring to look at and always a treat

First episode is just perfect for me! Like all things i like, every hope and idea. It's just so good

i was very pleasantly surprised by the first episode, it almost felt like i was watching a totally different show but in a good way (i still love S1 though, but sometimes change isn't always bad). i love how they're being so creative with it, it gives the show a lot of personality. i just hope they're able to maintain consistency throughout the season.

I have read the manga and most of the first part of the episode was filler or rearranged flashbacks from later parts as the manga started right as they were figuring out how the hallway works. But it was definitely the right decision as these scenes definitely expanded upon these characters we don't get to see to much of, re-introduced us to this world after 3 years of waiting and gave us so much visual eye candy and it made the show far better! (but I can wait for the manga readers to complain that an anime is a different medium from manga and demand a 1:1 adaptation).

Shota Goshozono's resilience was what carried us through the season. Only 2 catastrophic episodes with this schedule is commendable and then some.

If this is any indication about the production quality this season then we are in for a special adaptation of these phenomenal arcs. Of course not every episode is gonna be done by Gosso but his vision is gonna be all over the production.

Fantastic episode with no action or very little action in it. It’s not on CSM level of consistent and realistic animation but I think that is good. It means they’re not trying to be too self indulgent and focus too much on every little detail but making sure the overall product and the most important scenes and fights are the best looking and maintain an healthy production. It’s the first episode so it tends to be one of the better ones to hook people in but I think the overly ambitious shots and camera angles will tone down a bit and only be reserved for really important scenes and fights. With some standout episodes much later. The fact the episodes don’t have over a dozen KA means they’re not throwing dozens of KA to finish one episode while maintaining this high quality (which usually runs counter to a trouble production). My only issues is the Utahime scare scene. It wasn’t bad it was great but it just looked jarring. It may have been intentional but I just find it off putting and goofy not in a good way. I felt the mansion section went on for a bit too long (not a technical issue just a personal preference as I was getting really bored of it). Other than that a flawless 1st episode. I think they can keep up this quality and even excel it for the rest of this arc. I’m just more concerned about the next arc but I think they’ll manage.

Although the scene with utahime running away from rats looked a bit too motion heavy.....its still good to know that animaters wanted it to look this way(there was creative thought behind it and not just tight schedule)....also the seen with principal also looked awkward i get the feeling they were trying to convey but it just did not get through.

Shota did a marvelous job indeed, my eyes are happy.

It's definitely a different approach to animation compared to season 1, but JJK's first episode of season 2 was stunning. I hope the fight scenes will look as good as the first season's without the directing of Sunghoo Park.

The 4:3 ratio as though recorded on a VHS reminded me of that one episode of Cowboy Bebop about Faye's past.

It looks like Gosso took inspiration from Nakayama for this season. I see the Character acting and realism vision like in Chainsaw Man, but also with his flair of chibi “funny” anime humor scenes (which is not funny at all btw) mixed in

In the credit there were some Production I.G animator mentioned. Can someone tell me which production I.G animator worked on this episode.

What an insane debut as a series director man. It can’t be said enough. Gosso is simply a genius. But as you mentioned, with some of the corner cutting and cracks like melting already showing up in the premiere I really hope the quality doesn’t dip too much later in the season 🥲

Gorgeous episode, never seen characters be so expressive like this before, although the shot of utahime running out the door after she sees the rats was pretty jarring and made me go “that doesn’t look right”, but that’s literally the only negative I have to say honestly and it’s not even that bad, still a very unique shot.

I’ve already watched it three times lol. With so few KAs it seems MAPPA is taking advantage of the simple art style to abuse the farms of in between animators to allow them to produce a quality product on this schedule. Seems like the only way it’s possible. Morally wrong, sure, but MAPPA gonna MAPPA. let’s see how it keeps up.

Maybe it was just me but I found the background work in the haunted house sequence a little odd, I don't think it's a problem with the background art necessarily, but the compositing looked a little strange to me - busy layouts like these worked far better in Heavenly Delusion I think. The collapsing hallway cut especially (amazing as it was) looked quite jarring when contrasting the flat background animation to the highly detailed backgrounds before. The heavy motion blur on Utahime's movement was a little obnoxious, and I generally found that the direction hit a strange mix between character acting & simplified chibi expressions for the comedic moments, not uncommon of course but somehow it didn't really work for me in this episode as it felt quite inconsistent. All in all a strong episode though!

I hope s3 or the Shibuya arc has the cinematography of s1 Edit: not cinematography the artstyle (without extra detail of the uniforms and clothes).

There are so many good changes It looks a lot better the lighting the colors the composting in every scene and the fire the cg army the faces has looked a lot better Even tho I watched it more than 10 times without bluray and had read the manga I have got lot of fun watching it in bluray
