In the MLP episode Lesson Zero, Twilight Sparkle freaks out about not having a friendship lesson ready to report to Celestia in time. So she tries to do everything she can to make it happen. But there is an important lesson we can learn from this about not stressing ourselves out to be perfect.

In life nobody is perfect even when we work on a project, go for a new record or even write a story. That’s what makes us all human. We make mistakes, we make bloopers and sometimes a bit of hilarious nonsense. In all honesty it’s about having fun with what you’re doing and bringing joy.

@@TheEternalSamurai yeah unfortunately in some areas the manager at your job will think that you are capable of being completely perfect and no matter how much you go above and beyond for the business all it takes is for you to be late to work once and suddenly you're the most unreliable employee on Earth

This episode really resonated with me in particular because the episode deal with an accurate portrayal of anxiety. Even when it’s not a big issue, the emotions escalate to such an extent that it becomes dangerous. It also contains a great message about how everyone else should react towards someone with anxiety: her friends brushed off the issue because they didn’t think it was that big a deal, but instead of acknowledging and working through her emotions and helping her in some way, they told her to just forget about it, which is one of the worst things you could do. It’s at the end they realise that they should have taken her seriously.

Perfectionism to some people could also leads to procastination, because you want to nail things in one go and afraid of messing up... If anything, embracing imperfectionism is a great way to gain motivation to begin something new.

Take it from me. I'm a programmer. Sometime I have passion project but I cannot find the side time to work on them. Even if I do have the motivation to start a project, for my perfectionism I cannot find a point to finish my program. Sometimes just enough effort to finish something, also is appreciateable.

I like how not only this taught twilight that she doesn't need to be a perfect student in order to make celestia proud, but it also taught twilight's friends that they shouldn't have taken twilight's problem too lightly, sure twilight was panicking for something that wasn't a huge deal, but they had to realize that she was being mentally unstable, and they should've at least tried to comfort her and let her know that celestia won't mind if she missed a friendship letter, but instead they just laughed, which made twilight feel much worse.

There are also the type of perfectionists that won't try anything due to extreme fear of failure and the type that would give up on a project because it's hard to complete or give your all so you just hand over a seemingly mediocre version of what you originally intended and even though that is okay, it still bothers you how much incomplete it is according to your standards. I am both.

Perfection is unreachable, yet so many still strive for it. It's good to want your work to have quality, some things need precision and time. But you can't make it check every single possible perfection requirement like it's a to do list. I see it as do the best you can at the time, your old work will in most cases look lacking but you learn and improve along the way. You improve your skills overtime but that doesn't mean you'll just have straight improvement upwards 📈 Sometimes art block can hit you, on some days you just wanna chill and have fun. We don't live in a perfect world, why should anything we make be perfect? It's as good as we can nake it, not as bad as we can make it. Keep trying and working on your skills untill you are satisfied and even then after some time you'll find more things you want to improve. It's a never ending cycle, but if you see it as negative oh I'll never be good enough or I'll never succeed in this cuz of recent x y z... you are doubting yourself and making your work seem meaningless to you, even bad or in some cases horrible. I've seen many on such paths that just quit doing things they loved and moved on to other things they could see improvement faster on. And you know, I think that's okay; if you think you'll be better at something else go for it. But don't give up after just a few tries, I mean eventually you'd run out of things available to you so where would you be then? Jack of all trades but everything is on like level 5? Think I opened up a way tol bog thing here actually that Idk if I can finish pff My point was to work and improve on yourself and your work, no better satisfaction then finishing something and seeing how it turned out. Feedback is important too but be careful to know whobis giving it. There are all kinds of people out there, some are critical, some toxic while some are supportive and some are just trolls.. Feedback from your consumers/clients/watchers/followers is one thing and professional opinions are another but both can have constructive criticism. Doesn't mean you need it but never try to please everyone cuz it's simply impossible. Get different perspectives on things but don't lose yours, it can get upgraded by others but don't jump from lvl 10 to lvl 100 in expectations cuz you'll most likely be defeated as soon as you set a foot in that territory. I only wanted to leave a short positive comment but ended up writing a short essay or something pfff. Anyway, loving these videos :3 I actually almost forgot about this episode and mostly just remembered the last part of it. Think I'll have to go rewatch the show pff

IRL, I am probably one of the biggest perfectionists I know. I grew up with Aspergers, and for the longest time, my biggest point of pride was my grades, taking advanced classes, and my academic success. I used to feel like a failure if I even messed up on the smallest details on my sketches or got any grade below a B. Masking my more Autistic traits, special interests, emotions, and being scared of doing anything 'socially wrong' also made me very paranoid and anxious at times. It took me years to recover from my intellectual, perfectionist mindset, and I still struggle to express my emotions, be vulnerable with people, and I still constantly feel like I'm not good enough compared to my Neurotypical peers, despite all my teachers thinking that I am a genius. And I know that socially, I'll never have those perfect, Neurotypical social skills that other Neurotypical girls my age have, and that even with my social limitations, its much more fun to be myself and passionately express my special interests rather than just trying to please others or be perfect all the time. Recently, I started expressing more of my creativity and exploring more of my suppressed emotions, and it has been so freeing! In painting, a hobby that I have been doing for a year even, I learned that not every tiny little detail has to be perfect, or can even be perfect or precise, and that its the little imperfections that make art more beautiful, human, and relatable, and all of those tiny little imperfections are things that literally nobody notices in the finished product or that they give it more character somehow. That art is not about creating a perfect aesthetic or picture, but it's about simply expressing yourself and the beauty that you see in the things that you love. Lesson Zero is also my personal favorite episode of MLP, so I'm glad to see its very important lesson getting more recognition!

Your story really resonates with me. I was someone who took gr8 pride in my academics when I was in school, and I felt like my life was set up to be gr8 after college. To make a long story short, I felt a huge void in my life after graduating and starting work. But after making lots of RU-vid videos, I’ve found my voice and my way of expressing myself. Along the way, I’ve just had to get over being perfect, because it often held me back from expressing my true self. Thanks for the wholesome comment, fellow Neurodivergent! ☺️ P.S. I don’t have Autism/Aspergers or ADHD, I actually have a certain type of personality disorder. I’ll open up as to what it is one day, but I feel open enough to share what I’ve said at least.

If I had a nickel for every time I hyperfixate on all the little details of my videos and art trying to make it as perfect as it can be, I wouldn't have to do commissions ever again XD But you're absolutely right. I shouldn't have to obsess over these minor details. And I shouldn't have to worry about missing a week without posting a drawing or video. I'm always convinced if I skip a week, then people are gonna unfollow and unsubscribe. It's a bunch of unnecessary pressure, and I need to remember that there are people who love the stuff I make and are willing to be patient if it means getting to see the best work possible I can make.

Yeah, it breaks you. I also can't help but love Twilight's mental break not only because it's relatable. But it's also just so hilarious seeing her degrade into this insanity. That episode is well over 12 years old, and it still gets me laughing every time. XD

Well the problem is this episode she’s just straight up dumb “Oh shoot I must send a lesson every week.” Don’t even think to ask Celestia if I need to, because that seems like a weird requirement as friendship lessons are not really predictable. “Oh darn guess I better create a problem using magic!” That’s useless - solving a problem you made in the first place. And it causes problems and it’s reckless and - I mean I could go on, but you get my idea. “It’s About Time” is this episode done better, and while that episode is instead about worry, “Lesson Zero” is a good lesson on perfection - just executed badly.

I actually think the other lesson in this episode is more important than the lesson about perfectionism. I was really hoping you would do a video on taking your friend's worries and feelings seriously but instead, you basically said the same thing that they did in the episode that made Twilight feel worse instead. It's kind of disappointing that that lesson seemed to go right over your head even as an adult watcher.

i didn’t really watch every episode of the show, but i really hope there is at least one episode that teaches us about accepting our own flaws. the episode, “do princesses dream of magic sheep”, is the one episode i relate to the most throughout the series and it helped me too. luna and i feel the need to punish ourselves because we hurt people in the past, and we’re trying to prevent it from happening again. as for “lesson zero”, i relate to the aim for perfection. i’ve been trying to better myself after hurting so many people years ago, and every time i make a mistake now or upset someone, i always beat myself up over it and let one mistake convince me that i’m “a bad person”. i feel the need to have a perfect personality so people don’t view me like the person i was years ago.
