Nothing makes a better sound ? Ever heard of a Ferrari Enzo, Ferrari F355 V10 Carrera Lexus LFA ? Compared to these that sounds like a mosquito attempting to make a landing for a quick sip in your ear.
@@violaconcerto123 he could have beaten him with this same setup but his trans fucked him up, the vette would have been left behind in the curves, without enough gap to catch him in the straights
427 cubic inches vs. 80 cubic inches. And yes, that thing sounds sweet! Seems pretty high pitched for turbocharged 13B -- more like a non-turbo 26B on a diet. My low-to-mid 300 bhp FD would feel like turtle to the GT-3 RX7 driver.
@@poppa5289 actually the rotary is commonly considered a 2.0-2.6L, 110% not a 3.9L. It does fire three times per rotation but that is still only 1.3L of displacement. At most you double the displacement because its a 2 stroke engine only needing one rotation to complete its power cycle, unlike a four stroke which needs two rotations. There are also reasons to do with efficiencies which makes doubling its capacity unfair as well, so you'll never see it being compared to anything above 2.6L, its power output is generally closer compared to a 2.0L. Also even if hypothetically this was a 3.9L that's still 2.1L's down on the v8, so that makes reality of rotaries even more impressive
+autoparts321 Autoparts321 pretty much hit the nail on the head. The heavier Corvette has high entry speed, great braking, but lower speed at the apex and Corvettes have low exit speeds because they are horrible at getting the power down while turning. So if you're tucked in behind the Corvette, he is forcing you to race his slow style through the corners and then when it straightens out, he just walks away because of the hp difference. Follow him into a corner at a higher speed than what he is travelling, close the gap to the apex and get on the throttle at the apex, run wide and you'll squirt right around him. Then slide over in front of him and shut him out before he has a chance to get his throttle all of the way open.
Thats exactly what I wouldve done downshifted to get better balance and power available to squirt right around him jumped in front of him and even if he opened the throttle as long as you stay in front you can get him in the next corner with higher speed.!!!
2:01 I know that vette saw that burst of flames and decided it was all or nothing this day one of the absolute best races on RU-vid I hope to find you one day sir you have set a bar I hope to pass someday
Fantastic racing there Bob and your self Jeff.. I thoroughly enjoyed every second, i was on the edge of my seat all the way with a ear to ear grin whilst i was ghost changing gears in my lounge chair !..This vid is the reason why I'm in love with my Rx3 and a old school NA bridgey ... Thank you Jeff for the vid...
I like how the man who was actually racing with the vette and uploaded this video with the captions is more mature than those commenting. I'm a big fan of both cars, but that peripheral ported rx7 just sounds wayyy too good to not be my favorite.
GOD I MISS MY FC, I'm working on a plan to get another, it's been just about 3 years since I last had a rotary, and I miss my heart. No contest, still my favorite engine ever made. That last lap made my heart race, you made my day. Amazing video, long live the rotary.
Wow awesome battle, love the sound of that 13b. Too bad my rx8 doesn't sound that insane (although it still sounds pretty damn good). Way to keep the rotary alive in racing and show it's great capabilities on the track.
Wooooo!!! Had me on the edge!!! Love the sound of both engines! I have a vintage celica and I'm thinking to swap in a motor! Either a throaty sound of V8 with itb's, or a snappy happy rotary (12a or 13b) to save some weight! My 22R is fun, but It's nothing compared to the powerful rotary or the brutal torque of a V8! BTW...the rotary sounds awesome!!!! X^}
20 years back I oversaw, crew chief'd 2 GT3 RX7's. The one I nicknamed 'Scrappy' because it refused to be beat over the course of 3 seasons won 27 of 31 races!!! With little more than a very radical 'street port' motor, the top end charge was unreal. In mixed class races, outran 5 liter Mustang's, Camaro's, Porsche's, M3's, V6 Nissan Z cars. Still have a mild port 12A waiting for a special project car.
Man it was hard not to cheer and yell for the 7 at work... the sounds were absolutely orgasmic, and damn the driving was well fantastic job, wish I'd seen this sooner!
But RX8's are (no offense) the worst rotary Mazda made. I have a FC, a friend has an FD, another friend has a FB, and an acquaintance has a RX8. Even with just a full exhaust system, headers and intake manifold (no ports or anything), the FB can still outrun the RX8. They're nicer, more modern cars, but they're not the best rotary.
stock to stock, the renesis still makes more power NA than those...but peripheral port makes more power modified. would you rather a better chassis, or more power?
no offence taken. I just got my RX8 last month. I obviously took the better chassis, Recaro seats, and slick 6 speed over the C5's V8. I'm already thinking of ways to make more power, although 300 bhp is my ideal in the RX8.
Honestly if you plan to daily it, 300bhp is all you really need. If you want to take it out at night and have a bit of fun, maybe a little bit more. The biggest problem with rotaries is that to get a lot of power out of NA rotaries, there's only so much you can do (and most of it is pretty expensive). Ultimately you just want to get as much air and fuel into the engine as you can to get more power out of these cars. I don't know if RX8's have rev limiters, but I know everything up to FD's didn't have a rev limiter. Small things you could do to get a little bit more power to play with would just be the basics: air intake, better spark plugs (try NGK platinum's if you're not already rocking them). Porting is the most effective way to see a bigger power output if that's what you want, but that's where it starts to get expensive. But porting and bigger fuel injectors is what you would want. Unfortunately even with porting a NA, you're not going to see as much power as if you ported a boosted rotary. I know you said 300bhp is ideal for you, but you never know what you might want to expand on :) Honestly all I would suggest for a daily (I'm assuming that's what it is) would just be a little bit of a suspension setup.
Ratchet L. Can conquer I love my rx7sa love the 8 but all that added weight keeps it equal to a stock 12a fb power to weight but I can't argue a wide body rx8 is one mean looking car and with a free flowing exhuast their shoot flames like the series 1 rx7s did but I just say the new Miata coupe style and it's almost identical in shape and size of a fb that with the 13b ren or any rotary would be amazing to see
Great driving all around , there are several areas where we could see you had him . That said your car corners better and you handle it great . Love the sound and seeing it move . Good luck ,
The Vette is fast on the straights but its heavy. Rx7 reels him in on the twisty bits with late braking. I just love watching racing between engines with such huge displacement difference. I love V8 but I love Rotary more.
Great driving! You were going in and out of the corners at much higher speeds than the Vette but he just has too much power for you to stay ahead in the straights. If you had like 50 more hp you would probably take him.
Wow great racing to both drivers the V8 had just enough on the top end to hold off the Mazda. Excellent racing, thanks for posting enjoyed it very much!! Cheers...
@jacekpace1 No, the C6.R works car has a huge fan in the rear bumper. It's a C6 by the tail end, but something self made. Nothing by Pratt&Miller, neither a C5-R nor a C6.R
Awesome. I love battle vids, this one is super sweet for me since I have some experience with both powerplants in my rx-7. Great vid! Would be nice to show a view of the driver to see what's going on with the steering wheel, etc.
Thank you. This is my new alarm clock sound. And Text message alert sound. And Email alert sound. And Facebook alert sound. And Twitter alert sound. And my lullaby when I go to sleep at night. Thank you.
That's a standard rotary as that's how the first rotary was designed, look it up. Japanese got rid of the PP housings for side induction to make the car more usable.
Fantastic race. Great driving on both parties part. Slightly sad the rotary didn't take it, but great race. A few of those attempted overtakes looked good, then BAM corvette pulled up by a nose. He had a great brake setup to pull some of that shit off
