Permian Period (299-252 Million Years Ago) End of the Paleozoic Era.
A time of diversification for tetrapods, the primitive ancestors of the current mammals, reptiles, and many other strange forms with no living descendants. Although in this time they still look similar, Synapsids and Diapsids started to diverge. The Synapsids being the ancestors of mammals, and Diapsids the ancestors of Dinosaurs, Pterosaurs and other Archosaurs. At the end of this Era, the Earth suffered its worst mass extinction (A.K.A. The Great Dying), whipping out around 90% of the fauna.

Paleozoic as a whole is very interesting and the Permian is the culmination of that era. The great dying basically reset the evolution in some aspects and changed it in a way that would lead to what we have now. That's the reason why everything prior to it appears so weird and alien looking

@@Andrey.Ivanov Yeah the palaeozoic is a very fascinating Era as it had creatures completely different to the ones you would see today. @SaltySteff

@@DANNY-jw6co both are really fascinating in their own ways. The Permian extinction had multiple causes and it was just so devastating. @Craig Carmichael 1: Saurians (reptiles) predate the Permian. The Araeoscelidia had body shapes like those of modern terrestrial lizards in the Carboniferous. 2: I know nothing about bone microanatomy, but the skeletal structure of large Permian amniotes is reconcilable with terrestrial movement. Modern toads, lizards, and tortoises prove that terrestrial tetrapods can have sprawling limbs. 3: Seed plants predate the Carboniferous. Besides, land tetrapods are capable of feeding on spore plants as well, or on insects that feed on spore plants. 4: Evolution is not directional. There are plenty of "advanced" tetrapods like reptiles, birds, and mammals that have reverted to aquatic life.
@trvth1s
@trvth1s 2 года назад
@Craig Carmichael you're wrong. Evolution is not an ascend, Evolution has no direction. "It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent; it is the one most adaptable to change" Mammals are 150 million years old and could not compete with nonavian dinosaurs, an extraterrestrial object had to end their reign. Birds and mammals both thrived after this yet many niches filled by dinosaurs are still not filled. We are still in a post-apocalyptic world
