i’ve been really excited to bring you my full review of “Emily Brontë” from ‪@david_austin_roses‬
This stunning little compact Rose is taking so many boxes and although this is only the second review of 2022 you should really look out for this rose climbing high into my top 10 at the end of the month!
Compact reaching only 3.5‘ x 3.5‘ this rose does really well in partial shade and flower as well when only receiving around 5 to 6 hours worth of direct sunlight per day large blooms individual blooms measuring nearly 4 inches across open completely flat, if left un deadheaded it produces really attractive bright orange hips
Virtually thornless it’s perfect for cutting and bringing into the house where I found it lasts in a vase for around six days which is staggering for a rose of this beauty

I live in US, zone 10a. Many of my Emily's stems are almost 6ft tall and they are very thick and stiff so hard to say that it can be a climber, at least it is a very upright and unbendable... but the scent... oh my god!

My Emily is very similar to Eustacia Vye so far. Compact but bulky, wide leaves, large blooms that tend to form in clusters, excellent fragrance, blooms hold together well. Depends on if you prefer pink to apricot. Both seem to prefer more sun than partial sun. I love them both.

Can't wait to try this. i've been waiting for a better replacement for DA's older/retired creation "Queen Nefertiti" which i loved ! She looked more of a tea than i liked, but her coloring was really ethereal, but no fragrance. This Emily looks similar in color but with that lush antique Centifolia form that i love. So glad she has a scent that gets you excited ❣

I went to David Austin yesterday Ben and there was an Emily Brontë being used as a short climber, it looked amazing.

I have one, it’s one year old and it reached five feet! I treated as a small climber and it grows vigorously and repeats blooming well. I’m ready to have the second flush! I’m in Chicago, USA.

It’s not something that I’ve experienced for myself but I do have followers on Instagram who are strongly disagreed with my comments on this rose in the past but Rose has grown in Texas for supply to the United States often on own root stocks or on different root stocks than we have here in the UK

I planted an own root Emily Brontë from Heirloom Roses this year. She’s growing quickly and has already bloomed its 1st flush. The roses were nothing to scream about but I don’t doubt it will improve with time. She is incredibly healthy. Cheers from the Texas gulf coast. Zone 9B.

David Austin roses are so much superior to hybrid teas I have one Austin and it just had a huge flush and I deadhead two weeks ago and now a huge flush of new blooms all over the bush I will only buy these no more hybrid teas for me

Hi Ben I bought this as a bare root last November and I'm In the UK. Mine has one stem that has reached 5ft in its first year with me. I've planted it in the middle of an open border so I need to move it to the back as it grown so tall.

There are huge differences of opinion with this rose and the heights that it reaches several of my Instagram followers say it has reached in excess of 6 feet for them mine however has stayed well within its size bracket so yes you may need to move it Moving towards autumn and winter do you take a look at my pruning guide of how to prune it and create its perfect shape moving forward
@davenadainton4209
@davenadainton4209 Год назад
@@the_gardenerben brilliant thanks Ben. I may try to get it to climb up the fence once I move it, as it's a lovely rose to show its head above the rest. Would you advise planting climbers a certain distance away from a wall or fence please?
@the_gardenerben
@the_gardenerben Год назад
@@davenadainton4209 That’s fantastic idea I certainly would suggest always planting at least 18 inches away from offence or wall

Stunning indeed! Debating between Emily Brontë and Eustacia Vye. Planning to plant one variety in a row in front of my porch, like a hedge. Which would you recommend and why? Curious which is a more prolific bloomer? From what you described both of their scents are divine 😊

It’s funny you should ask I have now created a subscription-based service on Instagram. I’m not sure if you also follow there on that platform for a small monthly fee. I am now supplying exclusive content which includes my new most recommended top 50 you have to remember that I have over 115 varieties to choose from, and when compiling my best of selections, there is a huge amount to take into consideration for me. This rose just makes it into the top 50

Hello Ben, i have put off buying this rose for some time, because i thought i have Elizabeth and thought she has a deeper colour with the same form. However everyone who has her are so delighted and rave about her, and having seen your video in all you say about her, i ended up getting a bare root. Looking forward now to seeing her in bloom. Which leads me to my question. A couple of videos i seen of a review says that the first year is either no roses or very low rose count. Have you found that? Is this something i should accept, or is there something i should be doing. I planted with mycorrhiza and David Austin slow release. Thanks for any help.

First 12 to 18 months in the ground should always be focused on getting the plan established happy and settled focus on route growth mulching and watering properly a rose is a long-term investment and much as it will flower in its first year. It won’t reach its full potential until it’s been in the ground for around 36 months

France, Burgundy, zone 8. I bought this rose because of this review and planted it bare root at the end of winter 2023. It is now early September 2023 and I am planning to give it a year or two more before making a decision but am sorely disappointed in it so far. I find it has relatively no fragrance (and what is the use of a rose if it has no perfume?🤷) . Its growth habit is chaotic and unwieldy, it's going to be a giant rose bush (5 or 6 feet 😵‍💫) and that's inappropriate for where it's planted. I'm not sure where to move it to. I don't like the way the blooms are so crammed together, I find the flat saucer shape uninspiring and the colours dull. It's true the leaves are dark and sturdy, almost glossy, the canes thick, strong and brittle. It has shown no black spot or any other disease whatsoever. It isn't as thorny as some of my other Austins. I do hope I will like it better next year.
