Go to www.thatsdax.com to see more...Removing 1181 and replacing it with 1181LS. Lobe Sensing. I have had 2 of the 1181 fails. Both times because it threw magnets. The 1181LS uses no magnets as it samples and looks for a Delta in Flux lines and triggers the coil from this. Also note that the 1181 mounts where the points were, the 1181LS mounts 180 opposite where the Capacitor or condenser was located.

Thank you! I was going to buy the 1181 but after seeing this I'll most likely buy the 1181LS.

Thank you. Better than all the guessing from auto shops. Appreciate your time

Good & useful video. I have a 1956 Cadillac and was deciding between the 1181 & 1181LS.

I do not think the LS is as hot a spark or as precise as the non LS. Just a visual analogy.. But it is way better than points... And the ease of install makes it the way to go.

I have a 1968 Pontiac 400HO, and the LS is what I am eyeing to use. Looks rather straight forward, just verify timing when done. Also, My understanding is this LS uses a different low impedance type .6 OHM coil, which renders a 45K volt output. THX

Do u have a power wire from ignition?

Why didn't you run the wires threw the hole in the bottom of the distributor, where the original points wiring went? That is what I did on my 59 Chevy, and plan to do on my 60 Pontiac. I am going to try the 1181LS on the Pontiac. The Chevy has the 1181, and has been in the car for over 20 years. Guess I am going to have a look at it now after seeing what happened to yours.

I do not remember why it was so long ago that I did it. . And yes.. Check the ring. It took 15-20 years before mine came apart. Only 3 years or so on my Buick.. It is a problem for the magnet rings only..

I forget why.. IT escapes me as to why. I am sure I had my reasons.

The problem with the lobe sensor type is timing scatter; pickup resolution is so poor with the small diameter lobe that even a small amount of shaft play can create uneven spark timing. The large diameter magnet ring will give consistent timing, assuming of course the magnets are accurately spaced. The loss of magnets of course is problematic and Pertronix needs to correct this.

Using my timing light I can tell visually it is spot on, I do see some slight scatter, but little to none. Certainly nothing like you will see with the old points. Lobe sensor is far more precise and accurate than the old points. Also.. On the 1181 , the ring is not perfect and level all the way around which means the air gap changes some so there is some scatter with the ring version as well. Not as much as the 1181LS from what I have seen. Both are pretty accurate and steady. Way better than points which have scatter city. I think the spark is hotter with the 1181. Not sure, but that is my feeling. At any rate, I have gone to all Lobe Sensing LS versions on all my old V8s and I like it a lot.

On the 1181, Are you sure the end play on the distributor shaft is set to proper clearance. Remember the shaft is designed to be true vertically, and now were triggering from a horizontal platform. If there's excess wobble off the top mounting platform, that may spell trouble for the 1181. If the pick up on the 1181 starts to touch the magnetic trigger plate above it, things are gonna come apart. I say this because you stated, one lasted 20 years and one only lasted 3 years. There may be some other issues. When you went to the 1181LS you went back to a vertical trigger platform , which is much truer, but not as positive a trigger pulse. These units seem well designed and made. I like the magnetic trigger plate, but they need to come up with a way to deal with all that wobble off the top of the distributor. Magnetic lobe trigger would be the best of both worlds.

I have gone to LS versions in all my GM cars Buick and Chevy. No problems and they work well for sure. Keep in mind they have only been installed for around 3-4 years now with no problems. The 1181 also had no problems until after 10 years or so. Also.. Keep in mind these are collector cars only used on weekends.

Pertronix may have a problem with the trigger plate on a long term situation in the 1181. How ever, at 20 years service life I can't condemn the design at this point. That's actually fantastic. Especially considering you never mentioned servicing it. That is to check the air gaps. About the best warranty you'll get from GM or NAPA is 90 days on a pick up. If your happy with the LS version that's great. I don't think you'll get the service or performance out of it you did the magnetic pulse trigger though.
