Best thing you did to replace the points with a mag pickup the dwell will now be solid and not change over time the magic of a induction A/C signal to the msd box, points just can't beat that still I'd Keep a spare pickup in the trunk lol 😆.... The story about your dad is just awesome! I bet he's looking down very proud of his son.

@@RestoringChristine1956 stories like you and your dad touches me cause I took my son everywhere to the junkyard it started when he was five tried to teach him but he never got a passion for cars and restoring them. I could see you still love your dad very much. God bless him.

I remember using a matchbook cover to set the points on my '63 Falcon back in the day. Nice video ... thanks for sharing.

Very interesting video! I remember points, and GM distributors having a little metal door/window that you slid up and with a flexible allen wrench and a Dwell/Tachometer meter, you could set your point gap electronically! Those were the days. ;)

I used to have a Sears tuning meter that we'd do exactly that with!

Thank you for going through this conversion. This is one of those things I have always wanted to do but never saw a good video on the replacement. Maybe now I’ll feel comfortable doing it myself.

The hardest part is just indexing the distributor when you put it back in. That can be intimidating if you're not used to it.

Bill, I just want to say, I appreciate how you present your content. I have looked far and wide for channels that do not use profanity, or exhibit behavior that my 12 year old son can't watch. We are going to seek out an early Chevy to restore together, and your channel is going to be used as our reference/process guide, in addition to the appropriate manuals of course. We are hoping to find a restorable 55 2 Door Post car or livery model. This project is so much more than simply restoring a car, as you clearly feel the same about Christine. Our car will be ,not only a bonding project, but something much deeper than that, that will God willing, remain part of our legacy to be handed down and cherished for many many years. I have zero welding experience, but have rebuilt a small block 283 as well as an 1200cc VW motor. The 283 was in my Chevelle and the 1200 was in my first car, a 57 VW Oval window Bug. I prepped the body of the Bug, prior to having it painted, by Maaco, LOL, as proceeds were very limited as they are now, lol. I was 20 when I rebuilt the Bug, and 22 when I rebuilt the Chevy motor. I am now 53, and getting older, so time is of great value. I will most likely also reach out to you via this channel or further insight, if you do not mind, in the future, as we get closer to beginning, but first we need to find the car. My plan is a longer plan than your build, meaning, 3 to 5 years, mostly due to lack of money, but I hope we will see our car/project, on the road by my son's 18th birthday. Thank you again for your video journal of Christine's build, as well as your G rated content. I am sincerely thankful to have found your channel, as you appear to be a real stand up guy. Keep the videos coming and best of luck moving forward with each step. Regards, Richard.

I appreciate the extended note! If you haven't seen them yet, please watch Episodes 1 & 50. Both have background stories that ought to connect with what you're thinking. I'm very glad to somehow be a part of what you're dreaming with your son!

@@RestoringChristine1956 You are welcome Bill. I have actually binged on your videos, and have just started episode 47! The story you told in 1, coupled with the tales of your father, are very important in your journey and the rebirth of Christine, and adds tremendously to her construction. Too many are restored for the purpose of profit, which is fine if that is ones goal, but a build like yours has value beyond money. Thank you again, be well. And say "bad dog" to the good boy for me! Deuce and his antics are hilarious!! Great dog!

I wonder if you can use the pertonix without the MSD box?

YES, you can use it with a basic coil set up without the MSD.

So I've got company on this desert island! LOL! I'm all about vintage power. I tried to keep the points in there and built it with an MSD box because it definitely keeps the FUMES down. Now that I've replaced the points, we drove it around and were pleasantly surprised at how we didn't come back smelling like raw exhaust in the slightest! And Christine's ignition is identical, except she has an MSD 6A box. I'm definitely going to replace the points with the Pertronix kit when I turn my attention to the motor.
