I am not a trainer or anything but ... Imagine - if that was a small dog like a chi and you accidentally crushed their head+ I can see sooo many problems with this - I can instantly tell that if they ever release the dog outside in the yard the dog won't want to come back in because he is scared of the door - congratulations, this "trainer" just made their dog fear the door. If there is a fire in the house or something the dog won't be able to go out because they are now scared of the door.

I did training as a module in college last year. This "training" would count as positive punishment - you're adding (that's what positive means in this sense) something into the equation that the dog doesn't like, such as getting crushed in a door. Like Em says, the most common form of training is positive reinforcement, which is much better and less harmful for the dog. Unfortunately, because TikTok, this man probably saw little/no repercussions for his actions. I hope he got fired at the very least.

@@MrWereWolfGirl There's a show called Me or the Dog where a trainer teaches people how to properly rain and treat their dogs. She's extremely against any kind of physical force like shock collars or choke chains. There was one episode where the family had a shock pad in front of the door so if the dogs went barking at the door they got shocked. Only problem was after it happening so many times the dogs were terrified to go near the door so they couldn't get the dogs to go in or out. Once it was removed it took a lot of positive reinforcement to get them to not be scared anymore.

@Theelderscrolls52 3 года назад
My parents trained their dog to sit on the runner (rug) in the hallway when the front door is opened. And he has never ran out without permission. He is very treat motivated and he gets pats and treats for sitting in the rug. They did the same with the kitchen as well. If we are in the kitchen he sits on a rug when we open the fridge or oven. It was really easy. It’s called ‘place’ we point and say “Place,” and he goes and sits or lays down

So there are other methods.. I’m not speaking on this guys method. But just saying, for example, a method I do to teach door manners do not include sit and stay. I focus more in on the mental aspect of the dog. I want the dog to calm down MORE than I want the dog to sit and stay. I’ll teach that after, maybe, once i have a calm state of mind. Far too often I’ve seen dogs “sit, stay” at the door and before they’re even released, their mindset is still past you and a mile down the road. I’m just putting in my two cents. It’s hard to judge a 15 second video when you don’t know the whole story. Or the mindset of the guy.
@ina7084
@ina7084 3 года назад
@@FullOfRandomness02 I do the same. I watch the dog. I open the door bit by bit. The moment I see even the slightest bit of obsessive interest into that door, I close it. Dog starts trying new behaviours to see which one opens the door and learns the door opens only when they're ignoring it and away from it. I do say "back" though so that later on I can use it as a command for them to get away from the door on their own.

As a dog trainer I can, with certainty, say that this method will only create fear and only teaches the dog not to dash when you are right next to the door/on leash. If someone opens the door from the outside or it’s another family member he/she will dash. If you try this without a leash you will loose the dog (even if you don’t you’ll likely close the door harder because there’s no tether and possibly hurt the dog worse). I’ve also seen in the comments people being concerned for different breeds/dogs with health issues, reactivity, etc. this type of training post on tik tok takes these out of the training equation and, especially with an inexperienced owner, can make the issue worse or cause a ton of damage (don’t forget most people who will use this method will be new puppy owners or folks who have a dog that needs special attention they aren’t used to giving) As for the Shorty Bull; it’s very sad. Folks breed pits with bulldogs and try to go with the super buffed guy look (but don’t want a big dog) as someone hoping to specialize in Canine work I would never recommend this type of dog (or any like it) who have been breed to have many heath issues for a look. I’m sure the breeders take great care of the pups but really, no matter the care, I feel it is not ethical to breed a dog who has a high percentage to be extremely unhealthy. Edit: Em you are amazing! You’ve been a huge inspiration for me to pursue Zoology as a degree to help educate folks! They seemed prone to heart issues as well. They are just a MESS of very very expensive health problems.

Also for the dog "training" clip, notice that the dog looks at him when it hesitates. The dog knew that the owner shut the door on it, so the fear is the owner hurting them for trying to walk through. The dog also backs away and uses disengaging techniques by looking away and back. The guy didn't teach his dog not to door dash, he thaught the dog that if it tries to door dash with him around, he'll shut the door on its neck. If he wasn't there, I'm 100% sure the dog would run out. In contrast, I've taught my dog that if a door is closed and he wants to go through, he must sit and wait. I can simply touch or tap the doorknob and he knows that when he sits, I'll open the door, and he can go out when I say okay or gesture a "go ahead" with my arm. If a door is open unexpectedly, my dog doesn't walk through it unless I'm present and we meet eyes and I say ok, especially if it leads outside. I didn't have to teach him this by crushing him in the door. I simply consistently have him wait each and every time I open a door, and if he seems like he's planning to dash due to excitement, I don't set him up to fail; I simply remind him to sit and wait and reward it with an open door and freedom

My friend had a ferret that would just hang out freely with the family during the evenings. It was super casual. One day the mom came home and the kids had left the door open. We all panicked and went on ferret hunting mode. We looked and looked and never found him. 3 days later he was found taking a nap on the guest bedroom bed. It was awful to loose him but they family was so grateful he was safe when found.... make sure to always have adults supervise your small animals.

People also teach their children with pain. Personally I think fear tactics don't need pain when you're teaching a living thing. My parents never hit me or beat me. I don't think I'd ever hit or beat my kids. A good parent doesn't need to use pain on their kids, and a good pet owner doesn't need to use pain on their animals. Force? Maybe. But not outright smacking/hitting.

waffle falafel yeah pain is unnecessary and does not benefit any creature :( fear is sometimes honestly the only way to teach a young child not to do things like touch the stove🤦🏼‍♀️ my nearly 2yo always tries to open the oven and even if it’s not on I will yell OW! And it’ll scare him and he will quickly step away from the oven. He doesn’t understand explanations yet so scaring him away from it like that is the only way. But no one should be using pain to teach their animals or kids anything. I don’t think fear is necessary in animals either...? Like in dogs especially? Why do you need to make your dog scared when they are very capable of learning and obeying commands without fear?

sharks actually arent interested in eating humans at all. Sharks taste buds are on their gums so they HAVE to bite into whatever it is to tell if it food or not. Sharks also dont taste the same as a human for example a human tastes food as good or bad; a shark taste food as this is food this is not food. So if a shark bites into a human they taste the bone and flesh and realize we arent their normal food but biting into a seal thwy get the bluber and fat and will keep attacking. I feed my cats a morning meal when I get up and an evening meal when I get off work. Like clockwork. They started dashing out the apartment door when I get home recently. They learned pretty fast that this meant either no dinner or a very late dinner. No more door dashing. And they're smart, so they made the connection. This won't work with every animal, but it worked for me.

As for the Dog and the door darting - there is a much better much less intrusive way to train your dog. My working dog had the similar problem, as hes a mali and htey are high energy and quite territorial. But when you start young you can everytime he rushes for the door (due to the door bell or something like that) take them put them in their place (for sira it is her bed) and only when they are calm got the door. I know this may not work all the time due to some people ringing and beeing inpatient but my fiencé and friends helped ringing the bell helping me to establis htht the door is "my respinsibility" and that sira doesn't need to care. As for going for a walk and htem beeing excited I trained sira to get her harness as I put on my shoes and with that I have no stress with her beeing excited to get out because she has something to do. The whole Idea of beeing alpha to a dog is rebutted and even the person who came up with that theory withdrew it. Yes pain helps to teach dogs that certain behaviors are to be avioded, but that is something I don't see necessary as they learn just as well if you are patient and consequent with what you demand. And with most dog owners I know, the consequence is the major problem, they asume a dog has the same mental capacity as a human alloweing one thing one day and another thing the other is alienateing them as they need some form of consistent guidence.
@laurenmellen654

You don't even have to start early. My method is a bit different, since I want my dogs to react to someone at the door due to where I live. I put a puppy gate up outside the door to start with just to be safe (I'll use a longline on known jumpers) and set a boundary somewhere away from the door. Every time the door is opened, I block them from passing the boundary. If they get past me, I bring them back. The most important things to remember are to relax and be consistant. When I'm able to step away without the dog making a dash for it, I close the door and praise them. Rinse and repeat. As they get better, I remove the puppy gate, and as they lose interest, I test them by walking outside or leaving the room. My dogs hardly notice when the door is left open. It helps to make them wait before following through doors inside the house as well. I do a lot of petsitting and make a point of teaching every dog I watch door boundaries. The dogs who stay with me regularly are experts. There are so many non-violent ways to stop door dashing. I don't understand why someone would think it's necessary to slam a dogs head in a door. Sure, doing it right takes a lot of time and consistancy, but it also builds trust and understanding. Teach a dog to obey fear, and they will, but don't expect them to trust you enough to come when something frightens them into the middle of the road.

WTF is that "exotic bully" dog? It looks diseased that's horrible who's allowing that kind of thing to be breed? And don't say a peep about "it's just like a English/French Bulldog" because those dogs are also horrifically misshapen and should not be breed as with most all the show dogs. Because non off those are the original standards it changes anytime the new show dog star rolls in with even more off a mutated trait that's considered desireable for that breed even though just about all off them are horrible genetic defects that will negatively impact whatever short life that animal has. I do that training with my dog regularly, but instead of closing the door on her, I close it as she approaches. She doesn't get to go through the door until I say it's ok. The reward is not a treat, but the environment itself (i.e. going outside or for a walk). This is VERY important training especially if you have seniors in the house. Large dogs who don't have manners at doors or staircases can cause falls and injury.
@testerwulf3357

That’s very different from what he did. He was using pain and fear to control the dog.. This or treats are great methods! Positive training is fantastic, but that is not what he did.

I was a marine bio major... I chipped in with a group of people through a friend (so it was cheap), to the British Virgin Isands and we rented a caramaran. One experience was I dove under the boat and was immediately face to face with a barracuda who was pretty longer than me. Ended up, we figured, he learned that if he hung out under anchored boats, at night when the boat had its lights on it would attract other fish, we stayed there a few nights and he was always clearly hunting at night... We called him Barry. Then I ended up in the water with a nurse shark. I wasn't alarmed because it was only 1, and she was sitting on the bottom of the sea floor. It was the first time I had an experience with a shark in the wild, there was no cage, and when she had enough of me looking at her- she was GONE. I knew sharks were fast, but there's seeing them lazy in aquariums and watching them in videos- it did not prepare me for that speed. Yeah- if she wanted to hurt me I wouldn't have had a chance to punch the eyes or tip of their snout like they say. And lastly- I lived in Brooklyn NYC a total of 30 years, and we had a massive flock of quacker parrots by a high school called John Dewey. Apparently a supply going to a pet store had an accident and all the quackers got loose. There well over a thousand. It's crazy!

Once I saw a story where this exotic bully passed away at ONLY 4 YEARS OLD. And the breeders CELEBRATED that, calling it a long life. Most dogs aren't even at their best shape at that age and are still maturing, and these bullies are dropping before 5. No dog should be bred like that.

you asked for our thoughts on these 'exotic bullies' And mine is simple: Anything with a smushed face is cruel to the dog. The difficulties for the dog as a result is not fair on them. Short legs are also not good, but they're less of a concern than smushed faces.. My sister loves the smushed faces and has an old english bulldog and a frenchie.. both had to have knee surgeries, both needed surgery for breathing. Not only expensive but an ordeal for a lil pup to go through... Not fair... Not only her, but people i've met with these dogs complain about health issues and vet bills and my only concern is if it goes through that much, then what must the dog feel?

As a professional dog trainer what the guy did was exactly the right thing. Things to note. One. The door was not slammed it was closed, the door is hollow see the glass. This is why it might have seemed like the door qas slammed when it wasent. 2. Positive reinforcement may work in some cases but for a dog who darts out a door into possible oncoming traffic it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT for that dog to be aware of the door. 3. The dog was not afraid of the door the dog had NO fear signs of the door at all. The dog looked to the trainer for direction. If the dog was fearful it would have jerked back on the leash had ears pinned yawning lip licking some sort of sign like hey im nervous which it didnt
@CeltycSparrow
@CeltycSparrow 3 года назад
I agree with you on the one where the trainer is using fear to "train" this dog not to door dart. It does look like he is controlling the door....he's not slamming it hard on the dog and while the impact of the door does make the dog jump, he's not crying in pain.....but its the principle of the matter. We see it when the trainer leads the dog away and opens the door again....the dog is now scared of the door. If he uses fear to teach the dog not to rush at the door, this might inevitably backfire and instead, teach this dog that ANYTHING connected to going outside is a negative thing that will cause him pain. Had the trainer used positive reinforcement to teach the dog, he would see it as a GOOD thing and not a bad thing. "If I'm good and wait patiently at the door, I get something yummy"
