Simply,phenomenal...in any era..just the way he dribbled the ball, how hard he bounced it and not to carry it also..like they do today..and not to mention his passing skills...pure entertainment...and this was before he entered the NBA...plus his jersey number was #23,,figures...should of kept it in the NBA, unless someone from the hawks already had it..him in the ABA with the 3pt line,oh boy..all that talent, even with a heart ailment discovered during his autopsy...a pure "savant" in hoops...didn't see him play until 1973 as a 6th grader..he and clyde my favorite players at that time...

I have a little true-life story that may amuse: It was my first day in 8th grade and first class was “Gym” and we were all lined up around the basketball court waiting for the new “Gym” teacher who was just starting that year. Finally, a 30-ish man with a buzz cut dressed in chinos, gray “Navy” t-shirt and, if memory serves, Joe Lapchick high-tops came onto the floor with a solemn-faced little boy of four, maybe five years in tow. After Navy man introduced himself, he told us our first class was to run laps, which we did and while we trudged our circuits, our teacher proceeded to demonstrate to the lad how to dribble, cut, fake, and shoot and then issued stern commands and corrections as the tyke tried to duplicate his moves. The year was 1952 and the court was Aliquippa High School. The teacher was Press Maravich and the little boy has always held a special place in my heart and I feel so privileged to have witnessed the first day the legendary never-to-be-equalled “Pistol Pete” Maravich set foot on a basketball court. RIP, little lad, you were one of a kind. Press, you were, too, but a very different kind. (Don’t get me started with Press Maravich stories!)

I was at the game in the Superdome that effectively ended his career. The Jazz were playing the Celtics. Pete took a long rebound and raced down the court on a one man fast break. As he crossed the midcourt circle he dribbled between his legs. His knee buckled and he fell . As he writhed in pain and the trainers rushed to his side, I looked at my two young sons who were watching wide eyed and said “remember what you are seeing. Basketball history is being made”. 😮That injury put an end to Pete’s ability to play the game at the level that only “Pistol Pete” could play.

It's amazing how many of these shots would have been three-pointers with the current NCAA three-point line. If Maravich had played on a better college team, I am certain he could have lead them well into the Tourney, if not to a NCAA championship. Put him on a team like today's Zags and they'd be winning their first Final Four. Seriously, Pete deserved to play for better teams.

@@BrianKiddDevDesign It's a shame younger people never got to see Pete back then. I was in college the same time and thru the limited means we had back then, his presence was mindboggling. He was the ultimate of flashy in a good way. Flamboyant and skill beyond belief. Caitlin is much like him, though not as flashy and flamboyant. Skill-wise, they were on par with each other. Never would I have ever thought that a female basketball player could do the things that Pete did. Her impact is remarkable, and I haven't enjoyed watching college basketball in years until I discovered her a couple years ago. I definitely, along with many million others, were drawn in to this wonderful person in all we've seen of her and the class she has shown. Certainly, very refreshing to see.

Antoine Davis, the outstanding Guard for Detroit Mercy has most likely finished his career 3 points shy of Maravich's scoring record. The things I'm about to point out are in no way a knock against Davis. He didn't set the rules, just as Maravich didn't during his day. This is only to point to the absolute and total absurdity of this record. Maravich played 3 seasons and 61 fewer games. Have read numerous articles and listened to a lot of accounts that if the NCAA had a 3 point line that Maravich would have easily been above a 50 ppg average. Some estimates put him close to 60. Adding just 6 points to his average would bring him above 4100 career points. This is already absurd, but if you give him a fourth season we enter true video game number territory. With another season and adding a conserative 3 point shot makes per game this puts him around 5,500 points for his career. No way of really ever truly knowing though. Again, nothing at all against Davis. He's a great player and has had a great career averaging 25ppg. I just don't think the 2 are really comparable.

People were so struck by him, especially at LSU when he averaged about 50 a game. But my problem with Pete is that he didn't play team ball. That's evident when here 00:34 the center is waving his hand for the ball under the rim and Pete tries to do it all himself. His dad Press was coach of the team and wouldn't allow anyone else to shoot. That's was why Pete had all of those 40 and 50 point games, but never won a title.

Pistol Pete was a name that all of would say growing up without ever seeing. But I really never realized he didn’t play against black players in college. To think that’s not really that long ago, js

Not sure he was playing against the best available competition given that LSU was in the Southeastern Conference at this time...

Well he sure was playing against the best competition when he put up 68 points against the Knicks in 1977, namely Earl Monroe and Clyd Frazier. He would have had the same success against any college teams in the nation.

He was also first team all-NBA twice and second team twice, all the while playing without a left coronary artery.

You notice how Pete never walked with the ball or carried it!! Now that’s all the do is just about walk around with the basketball in their hands. NBA refs don’t call carrying or walking or double dribble it’s a clown show now.
