A decent walkthrough of most of the parameters. Most of those parameters actually CAN be tweaked in the classic "orange" phaser. I've done it many times, through component-value selection. MXR aimed for an easy to use unit, with make-everyone-happy settings. The size of switches, pots, and other components at that time obliged omitting controls if one wanted a smaller pedal package. These days we have the luxury of being able to stuff much more into a small form-factor....so we do! I find that anything more than 8 stages tends not to do much for guitar, simply because it lacks the bandwidth. That said, a friend designed, built, and demoed a 24-stage phaser for me, and on white noise it sounded AMAZING. But guitar lacks that sort of bandwidth. Changing from 6 to 8 to 10, to 12 or more stages will certainly move around where the notches and peaks occur, but it won't necessarily make any additional notches/peaks audible if one lacks the requisite bandwidth. So, be modest in your expectations. Some phasers will provide dual outputs with positive phasing from one and negative from the other. Those are nice options, but using both outputs at once into two amps will tend to cancel out the effect "in air". Finally, what you didn't cover is sweep waveform. The first issue EHX Small Stone used a different sweep waveform for slower phasing than faster. VERY clever circuit, I must say. The "Color" switch injects more Feedback/Resonance/Emphasis in one position, for slower sweeps, and implements a "hypertriangular" waveform that decellerates the sweep as it goes low, and speeds it up as it goes high. The result is that the notches and peaks take their time moving through the lower range, where you hear them more dramatically, and do the "turnaround" at the top end quickly, where you have a harder time hearing differences and notch movement. When the Color switch gets moved to the other position, it removes the feedback and reverts to a more normal "triangular" sweep, suitable for faster speeds. Essentially, it adapts to the way we like to hear things when they are changing quickly vs changing slowly. The other thing that phaser did, which was also quite clever, is that it included some passive filtering on the LFO, such that it "rounded-off" the extremes (high and low point) of the sweep at fastest speeds, making the turnaround, at each end of the sweep, smoother. Finally, envelope-control of phasing is a delight. Being able to either speed up or slow down phasing speed by one's picking intensity offers even more expressiveness.

I have a DOD Phasor 201 (2013 reissue) and that is a 2 stage phaser. Would you consider a firmware upgrade to replicate 2 stage phaser?

What if you would control the sweep with an expression pedal? Like a wah but phaser.. ?
