Cece, you got me again. I just turned 50 years old so this song falls right in the middle of my high school years. I won’t waste your time with the details but I will say this: this song helped save my life at a point where I could’ve made a very bad choice. And this video. One of the most beautiful ever made. Simple, staggering. The solar eclipse. Wow. Now about Kate Bush. Her voice is so angelic. Here’s a recommendation: check out her song Running Up That Hill from 1985. It was her biggest hit song in the USA. She never caught on here like in the UK. A d*mn shame!

Kate Bush - the greatest British female singer/songwriter of all time. She's a one-of-a-kind artistic genius (and was highly influenced by Peter Gabriel). Gabriel got the inspiration for this song after viewing pictures of the poor during the American dust bowl and great depression era and the feeling of desperation he saw in their eyes with no hope of jobs or a means of taking care of their families. HIs first pick for the duet was Dolly Parton, but she turned him down. He immediately asked his good friend Kate if she would do it and she accepted. There is a Classic Albums documentary on Peter's album "So," and producer Daniel Lanois said that as soon as Kate arrived at Peter's country studio, they all felt that an angel from heaven had come down to sing for them, she was a perfect match for the part of instilling hope, love and reassurance in Peter's character. One of the recording engineers said that during Kate's take, they were all on headphones with the studio monitors off, and he was standing right next to her while she was singing, and her performance was so moving it made the hairs on his arm stand on end! Also, in a funny bit from the documentary, bassist extraordinaire Tony Levin explained that he wanted a muted bass for this track, but couldn't get the right sound. He happened to have his baby girl's diaper bag in the studio with him, and on a whim he grabbed a diaper, stuffed it under his bass strings, and found the perfect dampened sound he was looking for.

This song is as true today as it was when he wrote it with the world torn apart by a virus millions losing their jobs the devastating impact on families and loved ones the feeling of rejection of futility and cannot provide for his family is raw ................and there is his partner saying you worry to much trying to keep him from losing his mind I can relate big time to this I’m so glad you heard this cece and reacted Kate bush has many fabulous song really gifted , Peter Gabriel is a legend from my love of Genesis but if you want to narrow down his solo hits solsbury hill and sledge hammer both are amazing but I do like Genesis if you catch him live he is 1 very unusual lead singer I will leave it there haha

The song was inspired by the Depression-era photographs of Dorothea Lange, showing poverty-stricken Americans in Dust Bowl conditions. Gabriel saw Lange's images in a 1973 book titled In This Proud Land. He felt that a song based on this was wholly appropriate to difficult economic conditions in England under Margaret Thatcher. He composed lyrics about a man whose unemployment causes stress in his domestic relationship. The verses, sung by Gabriel, describe the man's feelings of isolation, loneliness and despair; the choruses, sung by Bush, offer words of hope and encouragement. Gabriel originally wrote the song from a reference point of American roots music and he approached country singer Dolly Parton to sing it with him. However, Parton turned it down, so his friend Kate Bush took her place.

Upon returning, after twenty-five years to the land (literal) of my birth, it has been a considerable road that lies behind. To touch the dirt that last saw ones innocence, after so long, is heartening... An undrempt dream takes flight. Many with such aspirations, die trying to cage this illusive dream. Peter Gabriel and his music have positively influenced my life and thinking in more ways than I can mention, or probably realise. His song 'In your eyes' from the 'Secret World Tour' is easily in my top 3 favourite performances. Kate is Kate. everybody loves her unique quirkiness. As an Aside. last time I saw her was in Lidl a bit back. Good song. good reaction. thankyou.

Peter Gabriel had first asked Dolly Parton to sing this duet but she suggested someone from his own country who had much more empathy with the lyrics. And of course he chose Kate Bush because she’s like England’s Dolly Parton or Nina Simone - who has a voice like a warm comforting embrace to just keep going. It was the right choice, I think.

I think you should do Biko that would be a good song it is pretty heavy but definitely a good message more brilliant lyrics all right dear I'm glad you like that song there's another one A different album was Kate Bush called Games Without Frontiers that's another excellent one she actually sings in French just her little part that she does the rest of the songs in English she sings Jeux Sans Fontiere anyhow that translated is Games Without Frontiers I remember I was with my brother-in-law and we were up in Wisconsin at this cabin all the family was there and we went in his big full size Chevy van and we drove to the store to get a few things and this song was on the radio and Kate Bush sang my good buddy Mike he started singing along and he thought that she said something different she didn't I mean he didn't know it was in French so he sang along and he sang what he thought she was singing and he sang she is so popular I thought that was a pretty good interpretation all right my dear check you on the next

To fully understand what this song is saying, you should take a look at the domestic politics of the United Kingdom back in the late Seventies/Early eighties. The government at the time led by Margaret Thatcher, privatized every kind of industry and sell it off to foreign investors, which lead to many plants and mines closing down leaving millions (Yup, you read that right, MILLIONS) unemployed. So entire generations of miners and factory workers saw their livelihood completely vanish from them. Fathers, sons and their sons all had worked the same job for decades, it was all they knew. Peter Gabriel came from the upper class but he empathized with what those people were going through. Which is why he wrote this song, to give them a message of "I'm right behind you, don't give up."
