Reaction of Don't give up by Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel.These two are two of the most distinct and unique voices as well as musicians.They are also the best of England's export to the world.
Don't give uo is a powerful inspirational song that gives hope at the bleakest of times.

This song completely undoes the myth of male privilege. The pressure on men every day is enormous, to be the provider, the defender and the strong one...probably why most suicides are men. Once life has robbed you of dignity and the ability to provide food and shelter for your family, the shame is overwhelming...very hard not to feel like a failure. This song is a tender response to lessen the shame to a manageable level. Beautiful.

Myself as well. When I was at the bottom of the well, the despair was overwhelming and this song was a soothing balm to ease the shame. The other song that had the same effect for me was Pink Floyd's song "The Final Cut". When I look back at how close I came to throwing in the towel, I'll always remember the music that made me hang on for one more day....and then another.

This song helped me get through college and my early 20s. I felt like Peter Gabriel’s character and Kate Bush was my support. I had no one and her plaintive cries of “please don’t give up” mean’t so much to me. The eclipse of the sun and it’s return was simple, yet strong imagery.

The video is such a bold choice. It takes a lot of conviction and and faith in your idea to just have two people giving each other a comforting hug throughout the entire song. But it adds so much emotion. I loved this song for years before I ever saw the video -- then found myself falling in love with it again after I did.

This song was made back in the 1980's but it resonates with the hard times and need for love & family that has overshadowed all our lives these past few years. The eclipse of the sun is so prominent and all your can see is the fiery "corona" in the time of coronavirus. Wonderful reaction, I haven't seen this video for many years.

Gabriel said that this song was inspired by photos of The Great Depression during the 1930's and the look of hopelessness and despair in the eyes of these men who could no longer provide food and shelter for their families....the shame of being a failure as a man. It also underlies how important a good woman is during the worst of times. Some days, they're all you have.

GREAT reaction 👏😁!!! Apparently Peter Gabriel wrote this song because some of his ancestors went through "the depression" and was so touched by the way people got through it + he wanted a woman to sing with him to appreciate how women stepped in at the time to help!! STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL ❤️🔥😍!!!

To give you the context of this song you'd have to go back to the late seventies, when Margaret Thatcher became PM of the UK. One of the first thing her government did was to close off all the coal mines because they were losing revenue and it was much cheaper to import coal. But the result of that was that millions of people were all of a sudden out of a job. Take in mind that this was a passed down from father to son job, many generations grew up in the coal mines and that was all they knew. Many took to the streets in protest, many others took to the bottle and drugs and many more took their own lives since they figured there was no use anymore. Peter Gabriel isn't from a working class background, in fact, it's quite the opposite, he's from higher class. But he DOES know how much effort you have to put in to make your life work out and sympathized with the miners. He found a picture of men waiting in line at a job office during the great depression of the 1920's when pretty much the same thing happened, it inspired him to write this song. He initially wanted Dolly Parton to sing the female part but she couldn't be booked, so Kate Bush was brought in and she knocked it out of the park.

Shot in one take. They are standing on a revolving stand, which turns as each is about to sing.
@mvellis3863
@mvellis3863 2 года назад
A duet of two musical geniuses. Gabriel was inspired to write the song after seeing pictures of 1930's depression era dust bowl families who were destitute. He first asked Dolly Parton to do the duet with him, but she declined. Peter then asked his good friend Kate Bush (who had sang backing vocals on a previous album, and the hit single "Games Without Frontiers" where Kate sings the chorus in French). Famous producer Daniel Lanois said that the whole studio crew were in awe and felt like they were in the presence of an angel when Kate performed. Another interesting trivia fact is that bassist extraordinaire Tony Levin wanted a muted bass sound for this song, but couldn't get it quite right. He happened to have his baby daughter's diaper bag with him in the studio and he stuffed a diaper under his bass strings and got that iconic bass sound on this song. This song has been credited by many people with changing their minds about suicide or harming themselves (including Elton John, who said it prevented him from overdosing on drugs).

A wonderful song delivered by two people who are stars in their own right. I've been both those people with my other half and recognise the power of that support. But I have to add that now I'm old and most of the people in my life have gone, I'm glad that I learned the value of being that person for myself so I was here when I needed me. It helps that at least once a week I remind myself of who I am and reflect on times in my life when I've felt hopeless and needed to be strong. I think of where I came from and where I am now and how I got here and how much of a part I played in getting here and how unlikely it was that I ever would. It's an important message to never give up. Even when you can't see a way out or forward, there is one. You just have to hang on and keep your eyes open so you can recognise it when you see it and grab it when you do. My most important mantra is "This too shall pass". It means enjoy the good times because they can disappear in a moment but if they do, remember that is also temporary and things will be good again. Life is a cycle and you just have to learn how to ride it.
@manmaas
@manmaas 2 года назад
Beautifully articulated. I've always heard this song in the background and never really listened to the lyrics. Because of Stranger Things suddenly pushing Kate Bush back in the limelight I've been going through her back catalogue and sat with this today. It's heart wrenching and yet hopeful and we can all relate to the emotions at some point in our lives. At 63 it hits home powerfully to a guy who's has now lived a life in ways I would never have been able to relate to when this was originally released. It shows the unique power of music to mirror who we are and attach itself to our memories often without even realising it. Good morning to you all and let's keep walking into the sunlight.

One point about the video: While Kate and Peter were hugging each other very closely, there was a solar eclipse behind them. In medieval times such an eclipse of the sun made people believe that something very bad was going to happen. So this stands for hard times, and these two friends have gone through that together symbolically. So don‘t give up, you still have us.

A very similar song to this is the Beatles' "Nowhere man" which John Lennon wrote about himself as he was driven insane by the long tours the Beatles were doing where he went all over the world but at the same time all he saw from those countries were the hotel rooms and the Concert halls the band played. He was going everywhere but going nowhere at the same time. He describes the alienation, the fact that he couldn't find solace with his wife since she couldn't identify with it, heck apart from the other Beatles, NOBODY could. But the song also has a hopeful message "things will get better eventually"

20 years ago next month, I blithely went to a urologist, recommended by my primary care doctor, to get a vasectomy. I'm pretty sure the doc saved the lidocaine injection for himself because whatever he injected as a local in me had no anesthetic effect whatsoever. As soon as he started cutting I started hollering, but his only response was to yell at the attending nurse to "Hold him down, Goddammit!" Long story short, the pain of that vasectomy from hell NEVER RESOLVED, and I was left with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, a chronically painful disorder of my Sympathetic Nerve System. On the McGill Pain Scale, RSD sets the bar. It's worse than childbirth sans epidural, worse than end-stage cancer pain, worse than anything, and it's 24/7. Needless to say, it spelled the end of any sort of conjugal relations with my high-school-sweetheart wife. Over time, every other part of my body subject to prior trauma has become involved, to the point where I can hardly stand to be touched ANYWHERE. All of which is to say that "Don't Give Up" might as well be my theme song, but the video is nearly impossible for me to watch. How I wish my wife and I could just share a loving hug that wouldn't be excruciating, but if I were to dwell on that thought I think I would go insane.
