Peter performing his orchestral version of the David Bowie / Brian Eno classic ‘Heroes’, live in Verona.
Directed by Anna Gabriel.
The track features in the US supernatural horror television series 'Stranger Things' and is available on Peter's eighth studio album 'Scratch My Back'.
Originally conceived as a reciprocal arrangement that would be released as one album it was Peter’s half that arrived first, in 2010, featuring his orchestral interpretations of some of his favourite songs. It was titled Scratch My Back.
The second part, featuring artists covering Peter’s songs was aptly named 'And I’ll Scratch Yours' and followed in 2013.

I heard and felt this version of Heroes during my first sacred ceremony, a shamanistic ritual with plant medicine, with 8 other beautiful souls longing for healing. You can't imagine how deep it resonated in my soul, how much I cried out of joy. Heroes is one of my favorite songs ever, but this version is another level and being completely open and defenseless while feeling all the pain and joy from rne others in the room, it helped so much healing our souls. We CAN be heroes, and if it's just for one day...

My feeling is anything Fripp does with it is great. RU-vid has Fripp with King Crimson and Jacko singing, And there's another one with Fripp at Glastonbury with his wife singing. Those are pretty good versions, too

This is seriously the best cover of Heroes ever. I think David would be proud. I wonder how special the people in the crowd felt this performance was? It had to have been goosebumps all over. The orchestra is just perfect and when Peter steps on stage it is just a vibe that is utterly palpable. He's so cool and just belts these perfect bittersweet notes. When he says the line "the shame was on the other side..." it goes straight to my heart every time. Its like he unlocks some kind of shared vision of all the people, the freedom fighters, those on the margins, the rebels, and the forgotten that had to give themselves up or die fighting just so we can try to live in a sane and free world. Its so utterly sad to think about, but there is also a sort of triumph in remembering all of the terrible tragedies we've wrought upon ourselves as a lesson to be better to one another. Just absolutely amazing.

Nadia, when has there even been a cover this perfect? I’m not sure there has. Bowie and Gabriel came up at the same time. Both were flamboyant, transcendent rock stars who used costumes and personas to articulate themselves creatively. Both dabbled in New Wave towards the end of the 70s. In short, Peter is the perfect choice to cover a song of this magnitude by one of his most illustrious peers. I’m glad you enjoy it as much as me 😊

I have to absolutely agree with you :D. I do enjoy what David Bowie has written, but his performance and style in the original song just doesn't touch me as much as Gabriel's interpretation. Peter is one of those artists who can really call himself that, an artist by heart. His skillset is quite rare these days... No disrespect to any Bowie fan, though. The man was great, no doubt about it.

For me the best tributes ( since Davids death) have been those who worked with David , such as Rick Wakeman ( on here on RU-vid- BBC) playing the piano for 'Life on Mars', it's helped me. On Dec 13th I buried my mother. 6 weeks prior I buried my brother Michael. This song, the live version, I chose to celebrate their lives on video. I saw this live (not this venue, but in Massachusetts) and I get goosebumps every single time I hear it now. I had wanted to see Peter Gabriel live for so many years and this was the first time. When the wave of sound hit me I started to cry. So beautiful, so moving. And, as a cellist, I loved being able to see him with a symphony orchestra, it was perfect.

it makes you cry because your ego wants to be known that you can be a Hereo even if it's just for one day as most Heroes are not called Heroes because they lived but because they took the ultimate sacrifices so that another soul could live longer. Knowing how much mental and physical boundaries that have to be broken to help an other soul thrive in that moment is breath taking.

I am very grateful for musicians like David Bowie, and Peter Gabriel. Without David Bowie, this world would not have been the same and this song would never have been written. What a phenomenal interpretation of Heroes mr Peter Gabriel. A true masterpiece This is so moving! It is very relieving that good music can still be made in the days fashion and glorified film clips. Glamour seems to be more important than the feel of a song, ironically, visual over sound, this is so wrong!

I still remember waking up at 3:30am from my friend and roommate choking on his own throw up. Seeing him blue and gasping but not conscious still and I was drunk as well but for several minutes I was sober and sprinted to him and lifted him up and began clearing his throat with my fingers before turning him over. Such a small act at the time. We joke about it from time to time but there were 8 other people still passed out around us at the time. Johnny is a dear friend of mine still. That was over 15 years ago. Hes successful and has 2 kids and a wife now. He is still a very good friend.

One afternoon in July 1977, David Bowie was looking out of the window of Hansa Studio in Berlin when he noticed a couple kissing near the Berlin Wall. “I always said it was a couple of lovers by the Wall that prompted the idea for Heroes,” Bowie told Classic Rock in 2015. “Actually, it was [Bowie producer] Tony Visconti and his girlfriend. Tony was married at the time, so I couldn’t talk about it. But I can now say that the lovers were Tony and a German girl [Antonia Maass] that he’d met while we were in Berlin. I think possibly his marriage was in the last few months. And it was very touching because I could see that Tony was very much in love with this girl, and it was that relationship which sort of motivated the song.”

I cant believe that there has not been a comment on this songfor such a long time. I dont usualky write comments but this is a beautiful song dedicated to all of our own heroes and we all have them so lets enjoy this thought provoking emotion roller coaster of a song dedicated to everyone we hild dear and share the magnificence ofthis song sung so beautifulky by Peter Gabriel

My mind takes Me think of our Navy Seals and their support staff. Thanks Peter Berg for including this song in your movie: Lone Survivor. Beautiful song to celebrate the lives of those we have lost in battle and sadly at home.
