We have the pleasure of presenting an interview with Peter Hince, also known as Ratty. Peter was roadie for Queen from 1974 to 1986 for both Freddie and John. He was a trusted friend to both and has never abused that trust at any point, endearing himself to Queen fans the world over as a result. For this episode our listeners at this point have raised over £750 for Cancer Research UK and Macmillan Cancer Support. Thank you.

Hey Peter. What a great interview. Loved hearing your voice again. I feel honoured I’ve worked with such a music guru. Your photography wasn’t bad either. I’m still playing and collecting records now I’m not working anymore. Still got your blue BR? Ha.

Just listened to yr interview with Peter "Ratty " Hince again. Very nice guy.. I had also heard him interviewed elsewhere over the years & loved, loved, loved his book about touring the world with Queen, what a fantastic autobiography... it's about Queen but it's also about his hilarious shenanigans during his off time. The man can make you laugh ! Especially the story when the vehicle he was driving Freddie in broke down at the side of the road & Freddie went off to find a house & a phone to use. The people recognized him & invited him in for tea. Freddie was brought up with such proper British manners that he couldn't insult the people who let him use their phone to call for help ! But apparently they didn't have milk (most Brits put milk in their tea ) so they called over to their neighbors next door who asked if they could come for tea too because it was Freddie Mercury!! So there sat Freddie surely entertaining all these elderly folks not realizing Peter was worried what may have befallen him...He made me laugh telling of sitting in the broken down vehicle wondering where Freddie was all this time & worried that something awful could have happened to him. It was a long wait before help & Freddie arrived.!!!! Can't you just see Freddie sitting enjoying a cup of tea, oblivious to the time & chatting with kindly strangers so as not to appear rude !! Such a fun read. I read the book again a few months after the first & wrote to Peter to tell him how much I enjoyed it. Peter is such a lovely person. The interview questions you asked were terrific.

Did Freddie have a MacMillan nurse? My mum and I were let down by them so many times in N Cornwall. A Marie Curie Nurse neighbour was amazing and stepped in to help so many times, day and night. God Bless her xxx

Peter Hince in this interview: "Rami Malek was always going to be difficult. The main thing is: He doesn't really look anything like Fred. [...] He just doesn't have that presence. I never felt, during the film, watching it, thinking, 'That's Freddie Mercury!'" Peter Hince in a January 2019 interview with ABC Australia: "The guy that plays Freddie, Rami Malek ... he's good! He makes you think, 'Wow! That could have been Fred!'" 🤨🙄

Thank you for the interview. Very interesting... as far as Queen's video " I want to be Free" they were too far ahead for American homophobics. I think Freddie being in New York gave him the illusion that all Americans were open to the out gays. In fact that was a time they were fighting hard for rights and non prejudice treatments. Especially since Aids was on the rise here at that time... gays were being treated like a person coughing or sneezing doing high points of corvid. 🤧😷🙄😁

It wasn't him dressed in drag...it was shitty music, period. The band hit the skids in '82 with Hot Space and they never really recovered. The only two decent albums they made after that were A Kind Of Magic and Innuendo. I've been a fan since '75 where my first listen of Bo Rap absolutely blew my mind. Lots of Queen fans here in the states...Freddie, Elton, David, Rob just to name a few...no one cared about how they pranced around. It was ALL about the music. The "USA is homophobic" thing is outright pathetic.

@byron lemay @Linda Rogers Ouch! Byron, Your surprising opinion that Queen "hit the skids in '82 & " never recovered" other than AKind of Magic & INNUENDO is doubtful according to most people. You are certainly entitled to yr opinion but have you forgotten THE WORKS album released after them in February 1984 with Radio Ga GA !!! Hammer TO Fall !!!, IS THIS THE WORLD WE CREATED!!! Tear It Up !!!, ITS A Hard LIFE !!!, Man ON THE Prowl !!! , Keep Passing THE Open Window ??? And what about LIVE AID ??? Greatest Performance by a rock band ever !!! And WEMBLEY !!!??? GEEZ, HARDLY "SHITTY MUSIC" as you say !!! Nothing they did was ever shitty music according to millions of fans. I am also a fan since Queen & Queen II & in most Queen fans' opinions, their less successful albums were no way shitty, just not great like the big hit favorites... some of their ' less popular ' songs are favorites of people even tho not as profitable such as a few of mine... Man On The Prowl... Dreamers Ball ... My least fave album is The Miracle album, but I just couldn't get past those obnoxious little kids, but still... it doesn't qualify as shitty! I love every concert & every video & every song partially for nostalgic reasons but Freddie's voice, Roger's amazing drum contributions, John's perfect bass & most of all, Brian on the Red Special makes sounds no other guitar ever made. A few songs I didn't initially care have become faves of mine oddly... such as '39... took me awhile to even understand what the hell he was singing. And their KNEBWORTH live concert was truly amazing, never knowing then it would be Freddie's last no less. The AIDS was rearing its first signs of exhaustion for Freddie & he knew according to later remarks, it was probably going to be his last. The bravery that man exemplified as il l as he was & in unspeakable pain while making the snippets of songs for the future MADE IN HEAVEN album was typical of him. For his fans... sorry, but NOTHING QUEEN DID EVER WAS SHITTY. If you truly want to see the pain he was in, Watch a movie called THE NORMAL HEART starring Mark Ruffalo (won for Best Actor at SCREEN ACTORS GUILD awards that year. A story about the first appearance of a suspected "gay mens' cancer ' without any way to stop it, originally called GRID, & years later became HIV/AIDS , it shows how many years it took for President Reagan to allot money for research. GRID appeared in 1981 in NY, my husband & I lived there & witnessed the gay community begging for research for Reagan to make it a top priority & he finally did in 1985, but in 1986 he reduced the amount of funds & by the end of 1986 there were already 25,000 deaths from it in NY. ( I got these facts from seeing that movie yesterday) ... So, from the first signs of a "gay virus " thru 2014 the year that movie was made, 36million more worldwide have died of HIV/AIDS AND... more than 6,000 people DAILY are newly infected with HIV !! So. very possibly had Reagan supported better funds for research in 1981 instead of 1986 when he signed it, & the medicines were found that treat it & they didn't have to die IF THEY COULD AFFORD THE MEDS WHICH 90% OF THEM COULD NOT) then Freddie would VERY LIKELY be alive today, making music, performing. Brian May stated it was about 1 & 1/2 yrs after Freddie died in November 1991 that the new meds were found to allow a normal life. It truly broke my heart watching the movie yesterday, I had never actually seen what a late term AIDS patient's body deteriorated into & now understand what he was going thru recording those last tapes. Do a search on yr TV, (no kids around, please.) Roger Taylor's COCKTAILS FOR LIFE song is about this expensive med yet unavailable to many. Sorry to go off on a separate tangent, Freddie's death could have been avoided if only research dollars came earlier. I could scream at the injustice of that fact.

@@susancooper3111 Susan thank you with all my heart for this statement. I would give Him a part of my life. Or I would take some of his pain. Unfortunately it's impossible. Thank you very much.😘

@@susancooper3111 Thank you for that statement because it was the political homophobics in American that put a stop on the drag video. They wanted them to redo the video to be shown on MTV . Queen refused to. They also black balled the record on some radio stations...PS I to have been a fan since 1975 Bohemian Rapsardy. 🇺🇸

"The guy was almost forty .. he wouldn't have pranced around in a leortard." This has got to be one of the strangest comments. There's a world of opportunity between "prancing around in a leotard" and stopping touring altogether. Obviously, there are other clothes one can wear ... A healthy Freddie would have toured again, I'm sure. I know he said, at one point in time, he wouldn't be running around on stage forever because (his words) "it would look ridiculous". But I'm pretty sure that forty wouldn't have been his cut-off age.
