PETER JACKSON'S NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 6 - Horror Movie That Almost Was
This week's episode is diving back into the world of Elm Street, only this time we're getting away from the prequel discussion. Instead, we're doing one of the many different SEQUEL scripts that were never made. And it wasn't written by just anyone. No, this is taking a look at the time that Peter Jackson almost stepped into the Nightmarescape with "A Nightmare On Elm Street 6: The Dream Lover."
GET THE ELM STREET COLLECTION HERE! amzn.to/2S0qari
This series, "WTF Happened to this Unmade Horror Movie" takes a look at the various horror projects that could never seem to get things off the ground, be it for budgetary concerns, creative differences, or just an ever evolving Hollywood landscape. We dive into every aspect and see just how close these films had come to cameras rolling.

Such a good idea and a shame it never happened. I love the idea of a weakened Freddy that the teens actually seek out to mock and bully by taking sleeping pills. It's a good flip on the franchise and, looking back, was desperately needed.

I like the idea of not simply taking apart a franchise, but putting all the pieces back together at the end. That way, you get to dissect the series and examine what it’s all about, then leave it back in its original shape for others to keep revisiting in its traditional form.

@itslouiemoo8018 3 года назад
@@DeathbySkullfxxx Listen I know somebody with facial scars obviously can not grow hair. Also, Freddy has been around so long at this point, that he would be an old person to the kids of today. The beard was just more to give him a beaten down look. It would only work in the beginning of the movie while the kids are kicking his ass. Once he would start getting his powers, it would make sense for it go away. He could even shave it off with his glove. Also, at what point are we bringing reality in the Elm st. franchise about hair growing on a burn victim. Having a beard would be a reflection of his current reality.

Man I wanna see this film (or read the script). I would love to see this film made today. Heck the time jump between part 5 and now could work to the movies benefit. It could show how kids today just aren’t scared with the things we were back then. Also even though Robert Englund said he hung up his glove maybe they could coax him to put it on one last time. His age could be shown in the makeup, that as he weakens he ages, once a virile young killer now he is an old frail shadow of his former self. Then through the kills he slowly regains his strength and thus gets younger (makeup, lighting and maybe a little bit of Deepfake helping that). The end could have the protagonist taking away all that regained power and making him age even further forward to the point where Freddy dies, finally putting the character to rest. It could be a meta commentary on kids and not being scared of 80s horror, how aging actors are treated in Hollywood etc. That’s a film I wanna see.

Unrelated, but I always thought Rob Zombie should have directed the 2010 Nightmare on Elm Street remake instead of the '07 Halloween, as I think he could've actually made Freddy really scary. Like, I could see Rob making his take on Elm Street something similar to that of House of 1k Corpses, aesthetically and stylistically speaking. And in all honesty, when you think about it, Freddy as a disgusting, twisted character makes a lot more sense in RZ's universe than Michael Myers does. I could only imagine what nightmarish imagery Rob woulda come up with for those dream sequences! And also I think that would've gave way to either Bill Moseley or Richard Brake playing Freddy, two actors who I think would've done the role justice, instead of giving a cheap Robert Englund imitation. Idk - it's like... I see this movie playing out in my head, and god, it's amazing lol.

What a shame this was rejected. This would be very meta that Freddy became a cartoony joke nobody took seriously since part 4 and 5 made him a useless clown. And see Freddy get attacked like in the opening of Joker is perfect to see the MTV Freddy get beat up. And we would get to see menacing Freddy once again. There was also a cop who was in a coma after saving people in a burning building and because he's in a coma, he will never wake up and is permanently trapped in Freddy's world.

They could actually still do this idea now, and act like Freddy’s Dead never happened. They could bring Robert Englund back, he’s older now so will suit an older, fading Freddy. I know he said he doesn’t want to return again as the make up process was too long and gruelling, but simple make up and a bit of CGI magic could make it work? The movie was just a mess - didn't explain Freddy's return after Part 5, Freddy's make-up looked bad, Freddy was way too comedic, the kills were cheap and not scary, no connection really to the other movies, the timeline was off (is it 1991 or 2001?), Freddy's demise was lackluster and the ending was just abrupt. Overall, this movie was BAAAAD. Don't try to defend it please. There's very little it did right. I don't think giving Freddy a daughter made much sense since we never heard of her until now. I wouldn't have given him any offspring. It had some good actors and characters, but they all needed a much better story than this.

I do not understand why Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare gets so much hate. I honestly believe that it's one of the best in the series after the original, Dream Warriors and possibly New Nightmare. It had the over the top elements that became a staple in parts 3, 4 & 5, as well as adding to the mythology by way of back story. I accept that I am well within the minority on this but I just cannot see why.
@brandonspain12345

The plot is a COMPLETE mess right from the opening. (Freddy somehow managed to kill every single teen in Springwood?) I love Freddy a lot but he never brings in the same body count like Michael or Jason. He only had like 4 to 5 kills and sometimes 3. He was always quality over quantity. Also not being able to leave the town is really stupid especially considering he leaves anyway. It had no relevance anyway. He was never restricted before at least not to my knowledge because everyone sleeps all over the world. All the characters suck, especially John Doe, I get he had amnesia but damn he's about as interesting as a cardboard box and early drafts explained he was a older Jacob who tries to leave Springwood after witnessing Freddy killing a older Alice. Maggie was almost cool but she mostly stands around and does nothing all that exiting until the final fight. The rest of the teens are very bland stereotypes I don't care for and they had very bland deaths. Carlo's death was almost good but it was played for laughs than actual horror. Ruining the fear it could've been. The reason part 3's deaths were great was because we cared for the characters and loved them, understood them and wanted to win. Comment me tomorrow to named Freddy's Dead's cast and I would have a hard time to remember. Yet I can tell you everything about Dream Warriors's cast. They also not only ignore what came before besides Freddy and his house, meaning instead of wrapping everything as a satisfying finale, they instead tosses 80,000 new things and ends without addressing any of it. Like since 3D glasses do anything new that Nancy Thompson didn't do 7 years before? And finally I like to discuss about Freddy himself. HE *S U C K S*!!!! Gone are the days when he made a joke while staying in the dark like the original or a fine balance of being scary and funny like part 3. Now he's just a pathetic shell of his former self like Peter Jackson's script originally intended. He's not scary AT ALL!!! It's truly a compliment to make a melted face child molesting murderer with literal knives for fingers about as scary as a Thomas the Tank Engine cartoon. The ending of Freddy blowing is a spit on Wes Craven, his character and the original movie. Freddy suffered many good deaths like part 3 and 4 and many bad ones like part 2 or 5. But what did they decide to kill him in his last movie? Stick him with little knifes and blow him up with shitty effects. That had got to be the laziest, cheapest way to kill off a great character of all. Chucky survived better than this. What tf made them think that would kill a literally demon god. Real world or not, he seemed to take the pain just fine. Freddy's backstory also sucked. Not the daughter scenes, I mean the bullying and abuse scene. They made him a textbook Serial Killer. I always saw Freddy as pure evil right from the get-go because he was the Bastard Son of A Hundred Maniacs but this movie makes it sound like he was "tormented" and that turned him crazy. Yeah basically a Rob Zombie's Halloween explanation which RUINS the fear factor knowing that instead of believing that Freddy was 100% evil from birth. This movie sucks hard and even Wes Craven himself stopped halfway when he first watched it and ignored most of the movies because of it. It's a bland sequel that made me hate what Freddy's become until 1994.

@@brandonspain12345 You make some very good points, and I can largely agree with what you're saying, but I still liked it and honestly believe it was better than most of the sequels. _Dream Warriors_ is UNARGUABLY the best sequel, but as far as continuing the mythos of Freddy, I feel like _Freddy's Dead_ is far ahead of the rest of the series.

Would’ve loved (no pun intended) if this movie saw the light of day. Its sad we got a dumpster fire cash grab like Freddy’s Dead instead of Peter Jackson’s new, interesting take on Freddy.

I´m not a big fan of Freddy's Dead, but I don't see Jackson's script any better. It would have been very interesting to see Jackson's concept, but just remember he did The Frighteners which wasn't that great. I'm still waiting for someone to use Saxon's prequel script with a more contemporary take and do a whole reboot of the series. Thanx!!!

The problem of nightmare 6 (and 5, 4, and maybe 3) is the overflow of coloured special effects. Nightmare works if anyone doesnt catch the thin line between reality and dream in nocturnal surreal atmosphere. The script of P Jackson is better than the actual movie, but maybe it wasnt picked up because too hard and the "lover" in the title. I would dubbed "dream challenger", or "fighter", not lover, where is the love there?

Hey hey hey, I adore Freddys Dead, I won't hear a word against it! Lol It came out at just the right time in my childhood to have the most impact. Nothing but love for that insanity. ❤ As far as this PJ script, Wowie! What a great concept for a nightmare movie. This is my first time hearing about it, so yeah, some serious stun power here. Lol. As a kid, I'd have never traded Freddys Dead for Dream Lover...in my mid 30s now, I think I would. Great analysis of all this, thanks so much! Stay safe!

That was frakking BRILLIANT but I'd take it somewhere totally different. With the entire town using Freddy as their punching bag, the MC begins to see the people as being dark. Everyone does it. It's to a point where, if someone has a bad day at work, they take a sleeping pill to nap and beat up on Freddy until they feel better. Didn't get the promotion? Go beat Freddy. Girlfriend dumped you? Go torture Freddy. They've tortured a helpless being for a long time and it's gotten to a point where they can be said to be using him to vent their sadism and it's not about justice anymore. The MC runs into someone that's been established as an asshole in the dreamworld. He's there to beat on Freddy, which angers the MC. They argue about it and Freddy overhears that someone has empathy for him. The asshole almost convinces the MC that it IS justified as he tortures Freddy. But in a pivotal moment, the darkness and sadism of the asshole is revealed and the MC flips from being about to join in torturing Freddy, to finding it horrifically unjust and wishing they could make him leave Freddy alone. This wish imbues Freddy with just enough power to fight back a little. When Freddy turns the tables on the asshole, he immediately fears Freddy has the power to kill after all, so he throws the MC under the bus so he can escape. Freddy, capable of killing the MC has a little talk with the MC. He remarks that it isn't fair the MC should die when they were against torturing Freddy in the first place. A brief Convo about how it's always the assholes of the world who get away with murder ensues and the MC has flashes of all the cruelty and sadism they've seen the people of springwood dish out to Freddy. Freddy pretty much tells the MC, it's you or the asshole. What's it gonna be? Still hesitant, the MC chooses himself over sacrificing another, which prompts Freddy to point out that they're going to die to protect someone that killed them to protect themselves. Freddy says he can't do it unless the MC wants it, so the MC is convinced that Freddy doesn't really have the power to be a danger to springwood, it's just this one instance and the asshole DID sacrifice the MC to escape, so.. The MC agrees and wishes Freddy the power to pull the asshole back from wherever he is in the dreamscape. Some other springwood residents arrive to torture freddy, just as he kills the asshole, so everyone knows Freddy killed him. This causes instant hysteria and the entire town of springwood is terrified of Freddy again, which gives him full power. Everyone but the MC, who knows Freddy manipulated them to get power back, but isn't really sure who the villain is. The people of springwood are so dark and terrible to their punching bag, that there are moments where the MC feels like it's all just fair and let the chips fall where they may. Until Freddy kills an innocent and that sends the MC back on a mission to defeat him again, but this time, without the townspeople knowing. The MC does research and discovers the peaceful period when everyone had forgotten Freddy, so with the worst of Freddy's torturers dead, tries to defeat Freddy without the townsfolk using him as a punching bag after. A little social commentary about how moral righteousness makes people worse than the evils they oppose.

@aelius93

Maybe have Alice visit the MC and convince them that Freddy IS a danger and deserved whatever he got, even if the townspeople were just as bad. Ultimately it's about justice. The people that used Freddy as an excuse to vent their sadism die and Freddy is defeated, so that while he isn't tortured anymore, he isn't hurting anyone either. Maybe Freddy even surrenders to non existence.

Robert Englund is Freddy. A reboot with another actor will fail, just as the previous reboot did. One last Halloween 2018-style Freddy film, with Englund and using some concepts from this Jackson script, could be a final (and respectable) way to say goodbye to Freddy for good.

I say give it to Elijah Wood. He’s definitely proven himself a few times now with horror. It may even get the attention of Peter Jackson to come onboard and co-produce or direct. However, it would all be for not if Robert and Heather don’t come back in their capacities. It’s been proven time after time that there really are only two characters that fans really love: Nancy and Freddy. It would be interesting if Nancy had kids (or grandkids) and Freddy started coming after them. Maybe there’s even a situation where Nancy herself can’t go into the dream and confront Freddy directly. Instead, she almost has to be a “lighthouse” for her kids/grandkids: teach them how to fight Freddy, from the waking world.
