Pipe Tobacco Review: Dunhill "Royal Yacht"

Dunhill "Royal Yacht," blended by the Scandinavian Tobacco Group is a Virginia mixture to which "a unique flavor is added." That "unique flavor" is plums. Fairly high in nicotine, this seems to be a blend that elicits strong reactions. Many of Bradley's favorite tobaccos are Dunhill blends. Will "Royal Yacht" join their ranks?
Find out!
From the tin: "A unique smoking mixture. Exceedingly mellow blend with a grand rich flavour."

Got it as part of a Peterson taster set. It was my first experience of pipe tobacco (yesterday). I have to say, after waking up today to a morning bowl, it's very enjoyable, and the flavour profile is to my (beginner) taste. The nic buzz is spot on for me.

That earthy composty scent can be great in some tobaccos . I have discovered through a friend who acquired a blend of that was a 50-50 mix of Spanish Galleon and early-morning pipe. When mixed together it has that same scent. When smoked you have this aroma of being in the woods during the fall with a camp fire going. The bland itself was originally given to my friend by someone add just for him in Springfield Missouri. He told my friend to try it out and give it a synopsis. My friend let me try some and we decided it should be called autumn campfire.

addison davis - Obviously you shouldn't take my word for it, but if you're not inhaling, I feel like the risks are minimal. I'm sure it could up your chances for developing oral cancer, but it also greatly lowers stress levels and helps with relaxation.

Out of the tin I wasn't that impressed so I let it sit 9 months. I came back to it and was blown away how smooth and flavorful it was. I can see this being smoked on a Yacht with whisky or something similar. Good outdoor smoke

Hi Bradley, I really like this blend. The plum note you described was not apparent to me. The tobacco was primo, the cut and moisture level are top notch and the strong flavor is very satisfying. The nicotine level is at the high end of the spectrum and should be respected if you are to enjoy the experience. As they say “to each his own”, but I am surprised that you were less than enamored with this dunhill offering. I like it. It is good!

Great and honest review Bradley. For me Royal Yacht is one of the best tobacco blends I ever tried. When I smoked my first bowls I hated it.( I also don't like noticeably cased tobacco very much) Now I fully enjoy it! It grew magically on me. And its not for the nicotine itself I believe. There are many high nicotine pipe tobacco blends that i don't like(Irish Flake is one of them). For me its the blending with everything in it.

I had one tin of Royal Yacht about six years ago. Our local tobacconist had it on hand. I haven't seen this mixture ever again since then. I remember it being a little harsh. It had a good flavor that I liked. I believe it is cased with rum. But no one disliked the room note.

I really like this blend. I smoked it when it was Dunhill and now Peterson. I do like a wide verity and this one is in my rotation. It does have a slight plum nuisance slight is the key. Nic level is a little higher but certainly not overwhelming at all. I would recommend it. I think it’s worth trying a can. I got mine from smoking pipes.

Hi there. I picked up a tin of Royal Yacht today. By the time I opened the tin, I took a nice whiff, and it does smell like plum. Smoked it in my Capri pipe. Pretty nice taste and room note. I love these darker, earthier virginias. I usually dislike added flavorings but in this mixture this mild plum thing "fits" somehow. I bet it would be better without it, it's the strong virginias that make this really interesting in my opinion. And all that smoke starting at 8:35, my tastebuds reacted here!

I really enjoy this blend, and it was (to my surprise) an instant hit with many of my friends. It's a bit like smoking straight African Virginias while sipping a nice ruby port--at least my palate interprets the "plum" as more a "port" taste.

There are 'marmite' tobaccos - love 'em or hate 'em - then there are champagne tobaccos - deceptively mild and subtle but strong and intoxicating. Royal Yacht is definitely a champagne tobacco. It is not as fruity as it used to be but certainly as strong. It is so good that I only smoke it in my vintage Charatan reserved exclusively for top quality tobaccos. Try it and take your time getting used to it - it will repay your patience.

I haven't experienced feeling the nicotine from it, I wish I did to be honest. The first few bowels I thought it was too bitter (like a grapefruit without the fruit flavor) I let it set a couple of months. After that, I came back to it and then it just clicked on for me. It tastes much sweeter suddenly than I remembered. Now I love it. But Elizabethan is still my favorite. Now I can't imagine being without either. Those two and Solani Burley flake are my 100% must haves.

Hey Brab, Some one finally said nicotine content. I was a heavy cigarette smoker for years and quit I still smoke a pipe and love it ,am I addicted absolutely. Most pipe smokers who never smoked cigarette say it a hobby ok I buy that for the pipes yes . You don't have to inhale your body absorbs the nicotine , so to say you have no addiction is wrong. That is why these people praise high nic tobaccos , some don't even taste good.Thanks Mike
@stuffandthingsyoutube
@stuffandthingsyoutube 8 лет назад
+Mike O - You can get addicted to anything, but am I addicted to pipe smoking? Nope, and I doubt the majority of pipe smoker who treat it like a hobby and smoke in moderation are either. I have no trouble going a week without a bowl without any cravings or "need" to smoke. It depends on how and how often you smoke and your own propensity for addiction. If you happen to be addicted to the nicotine, that's fine I guess, but don't paint all pipe smokers with the same broad brush. For most of us, it IS just a hobby.

Hi Bradley, I'm a Dunhill fanboy. I just finished cellaring enough to last me. Durbar, EMP, London and Standard mixtures, MM965, BB1938, Nightcap, and Apertif. Sorry I'm not a fan of Elizabethan. I thought I'd try a tin of Royal Yacht before it disappears and received it today. Smoking it while I'm watching your review, I'm not impressed. Just not much there to excite me. Definitely no bright, yellow or red Virginia taste. Heavy ,strong and dark is my description. I feel more like I'm smoking a cigar than a pipe tobacco. More plum in the tin note than in the flavor. I didn't get any overwhelming nic hit that others describe but I don't get it from nightcap either. Great review as usual. Keep up the good work my good friend!

you should buy a tin and let it sit for a year and revisit it later. that's not a bad idea for some of the others you've reviewed already as well. it'll give you a new video series to do next year. it'd be interesting to compare videos and taste notes when the blends have some age on them. perhaps the plum with mellow out. New to pipe tobacco and trying to get off cigs. This review really helped me. I’ve tried 6 different blends so far and none of them really did anything for me. Whether it’s whisky or tobacco I like strong flavors and high content (whether that is nic or alcohol) and often well beyond what my friends would consider “pleasing”. I kept smoking cigs in-between bowls because I just couldn’t get enough nic to satisfy that craving, it was just all meh. After seeing this review, knowing my bent towards stronger things, I went out and got a tin of Royal Yacht and from the first bowl I’ve just been craving more Royal Yacht. That may well be replacing one addiction with another, but at least I’m not inhaling anymore :P I’ve got Gaslight and some other higher nic blends (according to your reviews) shipping out to me here in the BFE rice fields of nowhere Japan so hopefully that will help me get to a point where I can ween myself down and enjoying other flavorful blends :) Thanks Bradley! I really enjoy your channel!

Bradley what would you say your favorite blend of all time is if you could only pick one?
@stuffandthingsyoutube

Joseph Kimball - That's impossible to say! My tastes have constantly shifted. I guess Elizabethan Mixture has been a staple blend for me for the last year or so. Perhaps that's the closest I have to a perennial favorite.

Bradley,i am going to have to slightly disagree with you on this one.While your review does give a pretty accurate idea of what this tobacco is like,i think at the same time it also fails to aknowledge one fact: The blend is cased,yes and it does have topping,but..IMHO that is where the true mastery and experience of the blenders come in.The kind of topping that was chosen, its quantity, intensity, flavor, the way it blends with the types of Virginias used and the way it contributes to create the taste of RY is in my opinion nothing short of extraordinary.Casing and topping tobaccos is in itself a chapter and a part of the craft of blenders,and Dunhill certainly shows here why they are who they are in this industry.Creating a formula like this is not something many companies can manage to achieve.All that said of course,it is not for everyone,and those who do not like it are right in their own way.I absolutely love this blend,smoke it every night and would take it with me on a desert island ! If I feel like smoking something with no topping added whatsoever,there are plenty of choices out there.Regarding nicotine level,i think it is perfect! Solani Burly Aged is much stronger to my opinion.It made me sweat,and felt like I'd had enough nicotine when I smoked that.I really like your channel and watch it all the time.Cheers and all the best!!

+Alexander Bayraktarov - Well, there's nothing more subjective than taste, and it sounds like this blend really does it for you. I liked your mini-review. It paints a very good picture of what appeals to you about RY. I wish I experienced it the same way!

+Stuff&Things:Ah well,it is what it is. Your point about the possibility of high nicotine content being the main reason why some people like it so much is spot on though.I have given this some thought and i think you are probably right about this.Something keeps me commng back to it and i do not think it is the taste of plums,although i do not mind plums.

If it’s that strong it has something more than pure virginia.
@bartholomewfotheringay-phi5683
Bondman pipe tobacco in the UK (don't know if it's still made) is actually a good facsimile of RY without any added flavouring. It's a great smoke, but a bit unadorned. You get to experience just how aggressive these Virginias are, bordering on acrid at times. Personally I think the sweetner is a good idea, to take the rough edges off those high-nicotine "dry-year" Virginias. A friend, who smokes plenty of other strong tobaccos, claims it's the aroma that's special, though I'm sure the nic plays a part too. After a lukewarm start myself, I've come around to the view that RY is a very high-quality tobacco. This seems to be pretty much true of all Dunhill offerings, though it may take a bit of time to appreciate them fully. FWIW the top note on RY is way toned down from what it used to be. Also the ealier version was more of a fast-burning shag cut which accordingly packed an ever bigger punch. One assumes the market is daintier and more civilized these days.

Bartholomew Fotheringay-Phipps I have heard the Murray's version was more strongly flavored as you mentioned. I can taste the excellent quality tobacco underneath the flavor; I just wish the flavor wasn't there. Still, I liked it okay - just not one of my favorites.
