Hydrangeas are one of the most popular, beautiful, summer-blooming shrubs! There are also a lot of questions surrounding pruning and fertilizing them. Watch this video with Noelle, Horticulturist and Education Director with Petitti Garden Centers, to learn more about how to prune and fertilize your Hydrangea in the spring to get the best results all season long. To promote new, healthy growth, cut out any dead wood and trim branches down to the uppermost growth. Remember fertilize with Espoma® Triple Phosphate to promote new blooms and Espoma® Holly-Tone to turn them blue!

Can you do the same thing to a Rose of Sharon?

Yes, but you can actually prune the Rose of Sharon much harder, further into the branches. You don’t have to worry about stopping at the uppermost growth. Rose of Sharon can take light to heavy pruning in the spring or fall, preferably late winter/early spring, cut to the size you want, remove any old, non-productive wood.

@@acerone10 No. Hydrangea macrophylla is the only plant where the flower colors can be changed while growing through manipulation of soil conditions, (e.g. applying Aluminum sulfate and acidic fertilizer for blue or applying garden lime and a neutral fertilizer for pink).
