This is my long term review of the Petzl Irvis Hybrid crampon. I've been using this crampon for a few years now and this has been my go to for ski touring, ski mountaineering and easy summer alpine climbing.

My suggestion is to buy de Leopard (strap-on), the Irvis (lever-lock) and a set of cord. Take appart the Leopard and put together the Irvis Hybrid with the spare cord (the original cord, once you cut the stitching, is to short to reuse with a fisherman knot). With this situation you have all your bases covered. All snow while skimo? Take the full aluminium Leopard. Mixed non-technical terrain? Put together the Irvis Hybrid. Mixed with too much rock? Take the full steel Irvis (for snow couloirs, aretes, etc this crampon suffices. If you also ice climb, skip the Lynx and go straight to the Dart (you can get only the front pieces if you want), which is basically the same crampon but lighther and withouth a crampon bag.

Welp. I just ordered the Leopard 😭 A sort of... third addition to my existing collection of Petzl crampons and crampon parts. I now have the option to have it pretty much any way I want it. God save me! 😆 I would very much apreciate it if anyone could tell me the diameter of the white dyneema cord and if it's possible to source something simular from a different manufacturer. 15 Euros for 1,4m of cord seems extortionate.

Hey Dave. Greetings from Alaska. Funny, I was helping a friend last night get his kit together for a Denali trip this spring and recommended these to him. I guess RU-vid was listening. Hard to believe it was 6 years ago we were eating pizza in Cham. Glad you're well. Nice work here.

Love the informed long term review! Can you do a mountaineering boot vs hiking boot comparison or review? Want to see what you’re wearing in winter vs summer and if theres a good hybrid
@DaveSearle
@DaveSearle 3 года назад
Hi Karl, I’ll add it to the list! Might do it closer to the summer though as I’ll be in ski mode for the next few months!

Hi Dave! When you want to change the dynema cord, you need to cut the old, and the new what knot its fine to use to attach front and rear part. Thx
@DaveSearle

I use a double fishermans knot for this!

Dave, could you give us an idea of how much wear this pair has had, to get an idea of how quickly the alu heel piece has worn?
@DaveSearle
@DaveSearle 3 года назад
That’s about 1 year of use maybe 50 days ski touring and summer alpine climbing.

Hi Dave , noticed you have pin binding on your boots in the vid . Is this a diy job on mountain boots ? If so how’d you do it ? Cheers Adam
@DaveSearle

Hey. No pin holes in my mountain boots. Only in my ski boots…

Hi Dave! Thank you very much for the detailed review!!! Just one question: I would like to use these for skitouring but I am not sure about how long the rope will last when I use them in rocky terrain, (like the Groß Glockner). Were you never worried the rope would be cut?
@DaveSearle
@DaveSearle 3 года назад
Hello. I have cut the rope once but I always carry a spare! I think it would take several heavy uses to cut it unless it was an exceptional situation. If you keep an eye on it ans carry spare string then I think it is ok!

Hi Dave, great review. How would these be for the Matterhorn I’m trying to get my kit weight down as much as possible. Thanks
@DaveSearle
@DaveSearle 3 года назад
I do use these on the matterhorn if the conditions are mostly dry (which they should be) just be aware that any rock will wear the aluminium down. 👍

The string broke after around 5 tours. The front and rear crampons are barely worn. While amazingly light, the crampons are too light to be safe in my book.

At the beginning you mention there are a few other crampons similar to this. Any specific models that would be comparable? Dynafit has their Cramp-In model that uses wire attachment between front and rear, though the toe piece only works with specific compatible boots. Any others of note?

Any idea how these would do on a pair of La Sportiva Speed boots. Would you consider the speed to be too soft for a crampon like this. Just fast hiking and easy gullies?
@DaveSearle
@DaveSearle 10 месяцев назад
I’m not super familiar with that boot but I would imagine with the right attachments it will work. If it’s not a very stiff boot then don’t expect these to stiffen them up. You might be better with a stiffer crampon to add more lateral and torsional stiffness to the whole setup.

I just got these, and I'm wondering if I could just buy dyneema cord and cut it to length for use as a backup. How does the dyneema cord come? The pair that just arrived for me is sewn in to a loop and cant be removed without cutting the cord. Obviously that cant be the case for a new cord. What is the new cord like and how do you install it?
@DaveSearle
@DaveSearle 3 года назад
The spare stuff comes as a precut pair of cord that fits in the holes and is low stretch. You might be able to find something similar that is cheaper but would take some experimentation.

I have size 48 boots and the max on these crampons looks like 46. I was wondering if I could just put a bigger string on there. Would it work?
@DaveSearle
@DaveSearle 3 года назад
I don’t see why not! I always thought about this. It needs to be the right type of string eg low stretch and the right diameter...

@@DaveSearle Hi Dave, thanks for the review. I have the same sizing issue. What diameter of cord is used on these crampons?
