Peugeot 407 Rear ABS sensor replacement

This 2006 Peugeot 407 was displaying ABS and ESP warnings on the central infotainment screen and the instrument cluster screen, as well as an ABS light on the instrument cluster.
As a result of there being an ABS fault the speedometer would not display the cars speed, the cruise control and speed limiter did not work and the sat nav also refused to work.
Plugging in a fault code reader it was determined that the rear ABS sensors were faulty.
In this video i go to the extreme of actually removing the fuel tank to change the sensors, the reason the tank is removed is that the wires for the sensors sit in tracks moulded into the top of the tank, and the connectors are located above the tank. I was giving the underside of this car a full rust protection and have videos to make so choose the longer route.
It is i believe possible to change the sensors but just lowering the tank slightly. I have a spares 407 estate which will feature in videos later on and i will try to find out then if it is possible to change the sensors without dropping the tank.

Easier way is to cut and join the new sensor to the old wiring of the old sensor and waterproof the joint done it loads of time works 100%

Complete nonsense! The entire process done in the video is absolutely unnecessary. It is enough to lower the tank down a little so that your fingers reach the wire.

I replaced the sensor in 1,5 hour. And I am not a mecanic.. jack up the car. Remove wheel, then sensor bolt, nock the sensor out from the front side of the weelhub if rusted stuck. On my car it was a hole in the hub a little to the side of the sensor. Lower the tank as mush as possible by loosen the rear bolts. Disconect wire under the rear seat and remove faulty part. I used the parkbrake trick to locate faulty sensor. This cost 500 € at dealer (5-6 years ago), part is 30 €.. saved 470€..

Parkbreak trick: jack the car up, pull up the parkbreakhandle just so much as the parkbreak light go on, but not so mush that the wheel get stuck. Turn the wheel. If the warningalarmlight and beep for driving with parkbreak turns on, the abs sensor for that wheel is ok. If u can turn the wheel araound without alarm going off, the sensor is faulty. This applies all wheels, even the front wheels. The igniton must be on when u do this..

24:00 406 behaves the same way. The trick is to engage the parking brake - no codes, just loud beeping ;)

I did not realise the 406 had that quirk. The 407 seemed to require the computer to reset the codes after it though.

My gearbox pushes changing throw P to R and D...i cant drive in Semiautomatic version. And thr speedometer dont work too,says abs fault,esp fault prnd fault. Im going to change the cables of abs sensor and to see what happens.

I did it in the parking lot by simply removing the wheel and loosening the screw of the fuel tank.

I have read that it was possible, need to try it out on the estate when i get the chance.

I wouldn't say it was one screw rather 3 but it was possible. Used the welding rod and tape to transport the sensor to the spot under the seat. At the couldn't put the wire so neatly as it was on the tank.

An ingenious technical solution, to replace the ABS sensors, you need to remove the fuel tank, and to remove the fuel tank you need to remove part of the exhaust system .... Disconnect the sensor wiring to an accessible place? Why, this is a lot of normal hours at a dealer station! Respect for your patience!

A bit excessive i know, although at least you know what the dealer is doing. Some have commented and the owners club would also allude to the fact that the tank can be lowered down just enough to unclip the sensors. I will try that method in the future on the 407 estate as a supplementary video to this.

Conclusion of this repair..."it snapped"... 😂 Also this kind of rust is worry-some for a car of this age...Even my old 1992 Polo didn't had that much rusted bolts. Did a fuel tank job once with a 1990s Swift (water in tank)..Never again. My arms... 😭

Generally the bottom of the car wasn't rusted right through but those wee M6 studs do not stand up to much rust. If they had been installed with copper grease its a lot less likely to be a problem. Lifting the tank with your arms is good fun esepcailly as it starts to splosh about its like holding a very heavy, awkward and flammable jelly haha.

Rerouting it is the better option, especially as they have a bit of an appetite for them.

@@peugeotCitroen2CV well after some thought and half an hour of digging the old one out I loosened the bolt holding the rear of the tank strap funny enough for by the rust it came out no problem i jammed a wedge in to seperate the tank from the body about 25mm tied a piece of string to the old o e and oulled it through then did reverse to pull new one through job done .Switch on yea nomore effibg lights.

I am not a mechanic, this is not my day job its my own car i was working on. I just enjoy making instructional videos.

@@luka.mihai11 The car would be scrapped if labour rates had to be added on🤣 a bit like a wheeler dealers episode you see the parts cost but never the labour cost.

@@luka.mihai11 yep haha, the channel is a mix of longer and shorter videos. I try to reflect what is involved. The C4 ABS sensor video by comparison is a much shorter affair.

Peugeot bullshits... it's more easy to cut abs cable and made a new connector. Only 2 wires!

Or drop a bit of string and pull the new one up Although possibly some reason for doing it this way most likely easier to install on a production line.
