Peugeot 5008 - SUV or MPV? (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

Peugeot 5008 is another minivan from France, which pretends to be an SUV. There is method in this madness. Every now and then you’d probably like to drive somewhere more remote, like a cabin in the woods. You’ll need an SUV, rather than a minivan. This is why besides Touran, Sharan, and ordinary Tiguan Volkswagen also launched Tiguan Allspace. And this is why Renault Espace looks more like an SUV, than a minivan, and so do Renault Scenic and Grand Scenic. Peugeot followed the same path, but instead of calling its bigger model 3008+, it replaced a terrible looking 7-seater minivan with a boldly designed SUV - Peugeot 5008.

Review as a new owner of a 5008 GT Line Peugeot ( Its long I know) As a Swede, Peugeot cars are rare on the roads (lots of old Volvos), and not really mentioned that much, but as I needed to look after a car that suits a family of 4 children, I turned my head to the Peugeot car dealer. My first impression when I saw the car, and sat down and touched the I-cockpit I felt impressed. Design, and the feeling of quality were direct and instant. I needed though a car as I mentioned to travel with 4 kids, and the seatings are very nice. You can change how they should be in every possible way, and it suits me perfect. With fewer kids in the car, they have a living room back there, and the back row are the favorite spot for the younger ones. As you might get it now, I bought a 5008 GT line, lots of extra extra, and Ive had it now for 4 months and I just wanted to leave a comment that might help other buyers. My thoughts so far and I will only mention the negatives (remember, its MY thoughts, not a freaking science report): Negatives: - As mentioned before I think, the position of the left foot when your driving longer haults, and you wanna rest it on the preferred spot aint good. Im not that tall, but my legposition when resting my left leg aint great. You need to stretch it behind the brakepedal to stretch it out. No biggie really, but people having said this before are 100% right. - I feel the touchscreen in the middle of the cockpit and the processor behind the interlay are a bit slow. Hard to explain, you need to mix with it, try it out in action for a longer period of testing, but just a quick example: When reducing the volume of the radio, or whatever sound you might have on, its a delay of showing it on the screen, and it feels like a slow computer that have a shortage of RAM memory. This is also not a big issue, but everyone that know the feeling of a slow computer or smartphone can relate to this. - What else, well Im used with engines with almost 300hp and when i went for a testdrive with the car the cardealer had, it was the weakest engine, dont remember the spec now (105hp?), but I´ve read reviews that it was totally ok to have that even though this is a big 7-seater. I really cant say it is. I might be spoiled, but it aint much fun when the sound from the car feels strained and you really cant get the car moving. I went for the 165hp petrol and with a light turbo this engine is fine, but of course not a powerhouse. Best part, having cars before that I needed to refuel all the time , this 5008 GT are very fuel-efficent. - The drivers seat. I guess you can have the choice as an add-on, but the length of the drivers seat, well both front seats, could be longer for your legs and bum. Hope you understand what I mean, and I guess you probably can cash out and get better comfort. There are lots of smooth nice details as positives that I can mention but I guess it aint as interesting to read about really, but if your a big family and like design, a good looking car, but great quality, nice details I really can say, that you cant be dissapointed really. Its not a sportscar, its a family car Royale!

Hi Joakim. How do you travel with 4 kids? Do they stay all in child seats? Can you mount in the third row child seat? Do you have also a roof box for lugage?

I'd expect taller drivers be more tolerant, because they are used to squeezing in everywhere. Or because you're sitting further back, your knee is at a different angle. If you fit, good for you.

One of the main resasons we selected it for was the space in the second row. One of the few cars where a very tall son can still sit with his full upper leg fully carried by the seat and still space in front of the knees to further grow.

We've had the 3008 for almost 9 monhs now, and not sure if you got unlucky but we have zero problems. Also I am 1,90m and never had a single problem getting out?? I also love the steering wheel, especially when you start using another car again...maybe the 5008 is a bit different...

So glad I saw your video after I bought the car not that I would listen to you anyway. I have a 5008 a few months old and it's great! I dumped my super crapy X drive stiff BMW X3 (2 yrs old) after multiple problems with it (of course warranty covers nothing as usual) and went for Peugeot and am extremely happy. Got 5-year full warranty is southern Europe. It's an awesome practical family car. Your review is way too critical. Wish you were this critical about BMW and the other German cars you praise.

Come on, people!!! What you are doing with your 175 or less, so it's not enough space for you?? I'm 185. I have a perfect seat position on driver's place, I was seating very comfortably on the second seat row. No system reboot in almost 4 months. It's an urban crossover and an absence of AWD is not an issue at all. I do agree about the boot lid - it's heavy and with the knob only on one side. The automatic boot lid is very nice and working option, but rather expensive. Front seats and steering wheel are absolutely the same as in 3008, that's why it's strange to hear, that in one car the position is better than in the other. In general the car is very good and worth the money

I have a 5008 of the previous generation from 2011 - so for 9 years now - the hassle stowing the luaggage cover when using the 3rd row of seats has always been one of the most irritating parts. Also the unreliable navigation - it used just to reboot, but for several years it doesn’t work at all. The radio etc does - just the navigation doesn’t.

Interesting. We have the previous 5008, which I find very nice (and also good-looking, but that's a matter of taste). As a long-time Peugeot driver I was happy that for a long time my favourite manufacturer had not hopped on the SUV bandwagon. But now they seem to be trying to make up for being late to the game, and almost everything now pretends to be an off-road vehicle. The compact station wagon (207SW, which I loved for its practicality) has been replaced by the 2008; higher and heavier and with a higher consumption, so I opted for the regular hatchback; and the brilliantly flexible (5/7-seater) and very drivable 5008 MPV is now also an SUV, except that it isn't.
@mipmipmipmipmip

I once drove the previous generation 5008 as a rental. Very nice and roomy cruising machine! Design was ok enough. Current one seems a step back on driver comfort to accomodate a subjective gain in exterior design.

Hi Marek,great and intuitive review again.After looking your review,and chat we had about Android auto and connectivity of 3008 (U can see it i comment in 3008 review)..I bought that 3008, and told You to get back with the info,after having it. Got it in august,1.6 Diesel Allure.Love it!Absolutely,don t have any regrets. Small annoying thing is the same,somewhat buggy infotainment,when connecting Android Auto..Sometimes i press play on it when AA is connected,it has Deezer incorporated if u have it,and it still playes radio. So u have to unplug USB and plug it again to reset AA. I don t have so many crashes like u mentioned here,maybe a few,nothing to complain about too much. Everything else is very nice and practical. Note to self,buy electrical tailgate and keyless entry if possible,,, :D

This is a very impressive large economy car. I'm sure that software bugs will soon be updated, as these things are these days. The killesr that ruins or spoils this car for me are the low roofline, an even bigger problem on the 2008 that even my daughter complained about when getting out of the cabin, plus the wide centre console. Otherwise it would be an ideal alternative to a CRV or Qashqai. As it is, it is unfortunately ruled out. I'm about to take my 90 year old mother to a clinic in a CRV, a totally undemanding and painless, roomy vehicle that I almost walk in and out of. No need for the 4wd, which I have on mine. The Peugeot type front wheel drive would do fine. Of course both Qashqai and CRV are available as front wheel drive, so they are actually rivals. The Qashqai is more compact of course, mainly in the second row and luggage compartment.
@Commentator541

Infotainment on peugeot may be buggy, but the one on Qashqai is abysmal. Laggy, tends to get "stuck", and even when it works right, it just looks outdated.
@Commentator541

You remove the cover first, then unfold the seats.... and you don't need to pull on the strap and pinch your fingers lol, just push the seat in, strap is for lifting it off the floor.... and about the central console being for small people, maybe for slimmer people? But I agree it's quite bulky.

That "afterthought" you show between 7:00 - 8:00... I don't get it, why don't you just do the part with the backcover FIRST and then rise the seats in the back row? How can you make this such a big deal?
@MarekDrives
@MarekDrives 6 лет назад
Imagine you're doing this with kids running around, and you're in a hurry. It should be intuitive. Sure, after a couple of times you'll learn, but this is bad design.
@caleidoo
@caleidoo 6 лет назад
I don't agree. Like many things in a car, workplace or household, just do it in the correct order and there is no problem. If your method was the only method, I could I see the problem. Or point out to the viewers that there is only one good way to do it and move on. But don't do it wrong and claim this is "a problem of design". It's like driving off with the parking brake still on and saying "this is bad design". No, you just forgot to release the parking brake first.
@MarekDrives
@MarekDrives 6 лет назад
I think the right way is the way I find convenient, not the way manufacturer finds convenient. If you want to use parking brake as an example, in case of electronic parking brakes these self-release, when you start driving, and there is also auto-hold option, so you don't have to engage it by yourself. And that's convenient.
@blazzigante6160

“Peugeot 5008 is another minivan from France, which pretends to be an SUV.” Finally a reviewer says this! I was so tired of all the articles and reviews especially in France who all bought that SUV thing and said it's a pretty good family car for an SUV while the new Grand Scénic still has to compete with MPVs and not with SUVs. That's cheating. Also looking at the price the 5008 should rather be compared to the Espace.

Depends on where, and how you drive it. Theoretically in France they are very strict about their speed limits, and there are a lot of speed cameras. So you can have a Ferrari, but still drive behind a 5008, because if you overtake, it's going to cost you.

BillyNoMates1974 tell me a car that hasn’t? it’s just a matter of perspective. I personally found his review ridiculous. I have owned vw cars and Renault cars i had much less troubles overall with my Renault. Plus I m sorry but if you charge a car 10 000 pounds more you are expecting the car to have less problems however if you don t have the 10000 pounds extra you just stop to compare French cars to German cars and you compare them for cars in their category. Then you might realise how good is that car

French cars have a lot of wow on a first glance but a lot of the tech doesn't work properly and often fails. The plastics inside look terrible and the fit and finish even looking at the video can be seen to be rubbish. The final big nail in the coffin are those terrible ergonomics. SUV no MPV perhaps... Dear French Car Manager, why do you ruin your always nearly very good cars with just a couple of avoidable but nasty mistakes? Um! I forgot, there are no proper managers in these companies: I've the impression there is no manager who coordinate the different appartments concerning functionality; there are guys who make e.g. the seats - great, then some who make the interior design - great, then some who construct the stuff in the center console and nobody with an overview and - voila - not enough space for the knee. I think I had this problem too at an rental 3008, it was horrible, or any other maybe also french car: no space for the knee/comfortable seating position: a NOGO!
