thank you my man, this build just saved my party. i made a custom skald and named him The Undertaker since one portrait is perfect for it. the undertaker just hit a massive fauchard tombstone piledriver on some giant, scary ass pig demon enemies and saved ember's life. you literally saved a child today. you should be proud.

This is a fantastic build, I've been using a slight variant of this with Lunge in order to use the Grave Singer axe instead of a Fauchard and it's been a great experience.

There is definitely something to be said about Battle Singer when it comes to viability, since the archetype's offensive abilities ignore spell resistance. Immensely useful property.

I quite like the idea of battle singer, but its not amazing in practice. Firstly, this archetype will burn through inspiring rage a lot quicker than other skalds. You will use 4 song every 3 rounds as a battle singer, vs 1 song for every 3 rounds with other archetypes (assuming using lingering performance). Secondly, the damage really isnt that impressive. Its 10d6, 15d6 and 240 every 3 rounds, (the first 2 rounds in an AOE granted), but this is at level 20, and 10d6 is only 35, and 15d6 is only 47.5. Therefore, the damage is massively skewed towards every 3rd round (and this damage is only single target), which is a serious drawback. Thirdly, if a save is made, the CC effect is almost entirely negated and the damage halved. You spend standard actions using the ability, and lose 3 rage powers, so you will basically need to pump charisma rather than strength, take 3 extra rage powers as feats, and forget about doing damage with weapons. The base DC is rather low (10+1/2 class level to hazard a guess, it doesnt say in the description), and you dont get to add + 10 DC from equipment like an enchanter, nor +3 (or 6 if you dont mind cheesing expanded arsenal from feats). You only get +4 every 3rd round when using the songs in sequence. Therefore, this archetype is going to have greatly reduced combat effectiveness outside of using his song, and he is going to burn through that song far more quickly. Even whilst using his song, his damage will be significantly lower than other skalds single target. Finally, this is archetype will be a significant micromanagement headache in real time with pause. Demon could make this work (between areelu's cloak and aspects of the incubus and nabassu, you would effectively buff the DC by 13). I havent tested this, but if aspect of the colloxus worked on the songs, this would be a massive advantage, as you could cycle through the first two verses in 1 round, and then have another 2 rounds in which you could spam 4 final verses, for what would actually be OK (though not outstanding) single target damage. I think it should, as aspect of the colloxus's wording indicates it works on spells and abilities. Unfortunately, I think aspect of the brimorak is specifically spells, so I dont think you will get a boost from this. Another annoyance of demon is that for some stupid reason, Owlcat decided that two attributes, charisma and dexterity, would not receive any bonus from any of the major aspects. Still, the DC boost overall is very substantial. A distant 2nd would be Azata. The ability to reset song usage several times a day is nice, and between songs and steel and believe in yourself, you buff your DCs by +4. However, this doesnt even come close to a demon's +13 to DC, and its ability to cast the following sequence 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd and 3rd every 3 rounds, as opposed to just 1st, 2nd and 3rd every 3 rounds.

@@notalefty999 actually it only costs 2 song uses every 3 rounds if you use it in order (the tier 3 one gets its cost reduced to 0 if used within 2 rounds of the other two tiers) and it has a dmg type almost nothing has resistance against... but yea it still deals way to low damage and due to being an ability instead of a spell there aren't many things that could buff it. not to mention you take a heavy cost penalty everytime you have to stop casting in the middle of a sequence and being a standard action you can't do much but spam that ability and move arround a bit,

Would you ever consider doing a guide on mercenaries? Like which classes are the most useful as a mercenary, and modifications they need compared to a main character build? I like using mercenaries, but I find myself getting into trouble with feat requirements because of the reduced point buy

I have played many builds (still haven’t beat the game) but never once had a skald in my party. This last play I tried having your skald build and oh my goodness it makes the game almost auto mode. Easiest Garrison I ever did. Another fight I sometimes struggled was the gargoyles you get Regill. With the skald I used my rage and then just watched as we decimated everything. All your builds are amazing

I'm kinda new to the game and i wanted your skald build to round out my party. What i really dont like about his rage power is that my other team members can't cast any spells. But other then this super solid build.

You get a toggle that can be used to enable or disable skald buffs on that person. I usually keep it turned on and when I want to cast a spell I disable it, cast the spell, then enable it again. This way I will start every turn with the skald buff bonuses in case I want them.

I've recently got into TT play (recently as in about a year ago). I started playing 5e back when it first came out but had a lot of qualms with the way 5e did things, then my whole group split because WotC went batsh**t crazy and nobody could agree on a system. One of the longtime DMs in the group decided to run Pathfinder (as that was the system he started with and he'd been wanting to play it again for a long time but didn't want to split the group). So we started playing, I absolutely loved it then he recommended me wrath of the righteous, which is how I ended up here. Oracle is set to be my next class in tabletop, but skald is up there in my list of classes I really want to play. My current character is a two handed ranger. I just wish I found this absolute gem of a system and game much earlier. I don't think I ever would have gotten into 5e if I started with Pathfinder.

I really hate how we don't have a Skald party member to play with. Even with the respec mods available, I prefer to play the characters how they were meant to bee built, and appreciate the banter each character brings. Daeran always felt more like a bard/skald to me. Hopefully since they brought in Ulbrig, we can't get someone in the next dlc.

Personally, I think you can wait on Fauchard proficiency for quite a long time. Mighty Blow of Good isnt until chapter 3. I think there is an OK fauchard on a vendor (Woljif I believe) at chapter 2, and thats when you pick up outflank as well. Glaives are fine in the mean time. I would certainly prefer to rush cleave and cleaving finish early game, as this is a massive boost at low levels. Lingering performance doesnt really do much work until your song is a swift action (at which point, it can effectively treble your song usage with a bit of micro). I also dont see any reason to take increased damage reduction at all, and deadly accuracy can take its place, so you can take combat reflexes in place of the bonus rage power at level 3.

Fauchard can be delayed indeed, I just like having someone using it early as this build is more merc themed. Lingering has always helped me, since even as early as level 1 you can just activate it, deactivate it, then Charge ambush the enemy just fine as I often due through Auto-Pause: Enemy Sighted.

Lingering Performance is simply a must have. Especially for Turn Based, because it basically provides you with Skald's song for the whole battle in most cases just by enabling it for 1 round.

@@whatsupbrooos Its very good when its a swift action, but at lower levels, A) The bonuses are small enough that its hardly something you need always on and B) Its will waste a full round to de-activate and reactivate it. Therefore, you will probably just leave it running on harder fights and not use it the rest of the time. Once its a swift action, toggling it on and off every 3rd round is a very reasonable option, and thats when it massively extends your usage of the song. If you are going to pick up cleave and cleaving finish, you might as well do so at lower levels. Assuming more than 1 target, it can double to triple your number of attacks, which is huge.

@@notalefty999 You get your song as a move action quite early. It provides you with 1 extra attack for the whole party, with a bonus to attack, and 2 more additional attacks for your pets already around level 5. Are you kidding this is not something worth sacrificing your full-round attack (which is usually only 1, at max 2 attacks at that time) for your cleave attack? Moreover, with Lingering Performance you can actually pre-buff your party with your song in most cases. Just hit the pause when you spot enemies, and enable your song. Usually, it's activated faster than the battle starts even if the enemies spot you as well.

@@whatsupbrooos The extra attack is at a really low AB and until chapter 2, cannot bypass DR. You can certainly leave this until level 5 and grab cleaving finish at level 5. You also wont have any pets before level 5 anyway, without merc, as they mainly come from either multiclass (and earliest boon companion is going to be level 5 for a demonslayer multiclass) or mythic abilities, earliest of which is level 7 to grab boon companion for soseil or the revelation for Daeran. And again, there is nothing to stop you using inspired rage without lingering song. You cannot effectively toggle it on and off for a massively increased duration until swift song, and you dont need the low level version of the song on every fight, it simply doesnt do that much. Also, its hardly as though at low levels, every fight is over in 3 rounds, nor will you have enough uses of your song to have it always active anyway, even with lingering performance. So absolutely, its worth grabbing cleave and cleaving finish early on a high strength two hander. You will get 1 - 2 extra attacks very frequently (at low levels, landing a killing blow will be very common - many enemies will die to a single hit from a high strength two hander), which is a lot better than some really crappy bite attacks which will miss nearly all the time at low levels, have no DR bypass until chapter 2, and do anaemic damage anyway. One single hit from a glaive by your skald (and these will be at a much higher AB) will probably do damage equivalent to around 4 bite attacks. 1d4+1/2 strength is going to be 4.5 on average damage typically, assuming 18-20 strength. Marching terror with the tome will be 1d10+1d6+8 assuming 18 strength, which is 17 damage on average, before considering power attack. The AB will be 7 points higher. Also, it will hit two targets, have two chances of causing fear, and generate significantly more attacks of the opportunity.

I think always a chance is generally pretty naff, with the possible exception of vital strike builds, where missing due to a natural 1 feels really bad, and more likely to be an issue as its full BAB every time. However, if you are attacking several times a round, an automiss on a 1 isnt really that big a deal (its 1 in 20), especially given that a natural 1 is still a miss if you AB doesnt equal the enemy AC. With consequent attacks, you AB may be as low as -15. If its mathematically impossible for you to miss without the critical failure rule, its probably a trivial fight, and not worth investing a mythic ability for.

The thing is, if your AB is so high that you only miss on 1s(and that's often the case with good martial builds), Always A Chance reduces your chance to miss by 100%. That's massive.

@@miraclemaker1418 No, at the very best, its a 5% increased chance to hit. That is never massive. If you do indeed have a 100% chance of hitting, having a 95% chance of hitting is absolutely fine. It will still be a trivial fight. It is certainly not the case that your AB will equal or exceed enemy AC on non trivial encounters unless you engage in extreme buffing, which is very tedious and finite. You are not going to have guarded hearth, touch of good, visions of madness and every single round per level buff active on most fights.

@@notalefty999 you can't get past the game at higher difficulties without extensive buffing. It would involve resting in a dungeon which is even more bothersome. With enduring spells I cast them all once and it's done for the dungeon. Moreover builds are often focused heavily on offense rather than defense and as a result, if you can't kill the enemy in a couple of rounds, they WILL kill you no matter how mundane the mobs may be. By reducing your chance to miss by 100%, you aren't at the mercy of the dice. It's just simple math.

@@miraclemaker1418 There is a big difference between minute per level buffs + haste to being absolutely maxed out all the time. And obviously you dont need to be buffed to the extent that it is mathematically impossible for you to miss. That kind of buffing relies on cleric specific buffs which cannot be extended by enduring spells. In any case, the difference between hitting 95% of the time and 100% of the time is very trivial. Firstly, these are not challenging encounters, and secondly, enemies you can hit this reliably will die extremely fast anyway. Between party members and animal companions and AoOs, you are probably capable of attacking 50 times a round as party, but for the fact that the targets within reach would die well before then, and you have to move onto another target, ending your full attack action. A handful of attacks missing will make no meaningful difference to how long the enemy survives. Rolling a 1 on a save is a big deal, and enemies rolling double 20 and critting even when they would otherwise be incapable of hitting you is a big deal, but the occasional miss is not. Always a chance is a win more mechanic. If its giving you any benefit, you were going to win anyway. In challenging encounters, you are not hitting if you roll a one, even without the critical fail rule.

My horses don't use hooves for example and this happens with any animal that there's more than one natural attack from the start... F******g annoying! Trying a work around it but without success... :(

I swear my Dog and Wolves at least are attacking just fine, especially after boosted with Lesser Beast Totem so they get 2 Claw attacks for 3 attacks at around level 3 or so.

lethal stance isn't shared, is it? reckless stance -> inspire ferocity was made to be shared, at the cost of -1 AC. have i been lied to, do skalds share stances and other rage bonuses? then why is there a skald archetype with feats specifically made just for sharing scent?

But for story party members, it's better on characters that you recruit early at level 1-2 or so. It can work for Ember too but she's not really that good for melee, but can still go for Throwing Axes (as strange as that sounds!).

beast totem lesser doesn't add 2 claw attacks unless 2 EMPTY hands ! So unless using light weapon with free of hand when it would give (-5 secondary claw attack from the free off hand ) it does nothing for the melee weapon users in your party (most/all of them).. For animal companions it adds ONE claw attack to their byte attack (they dual wield byte + claw without dual wield penalties ) .. As I tend to build the animal companions as tanks .. And run Reckless stance (un-typed) AB bonus (works for range attacks and ranged touch attacks ) I cannot accept rage on pets (-AC) early.. With Beast totem is compensates the AC loss from reckless stance BUT .. Then (I'm considering) comes inspire ferocity that doubles the bonuses and penalties from reckless stance .. so again off on tanking pets ?

Azata can help due to Incredible Might Superpower, especially when combined with Pounce and high crit range weapons like Fauchard. You also have a lot of powerful support buffs like Believe in Yourself. While it's not as effective as Trickster, it can still be quite powerful. I am new to the game. Love your videos. I have some very basic questions, that are not 100% obvious to me after watching your videos and searching things on google: 1) I want to stop my current (first) playthrough and start all over with a decent build. I want to employ my own character + Seelah, Lann, Sosiel, Camelia plus another character. Is this guide supposed to be for that 6th character. I guess I am supposed to create him as a mercenary. How and when do I do that? 2) From watching your videos it is clear that pets are super strong. How do you actually get them and activate them? 1) There is an NPC named Hilor who you can find in the Defender's Heart tavern (and other quest hub locations as you progress the main story), and he offers mercenaries. He is also the NPC that offers retraining if you have it enabled in your difficulty options. 2) Pets are obtained from any class which offers a feature called "Animal Companion," and to see what this looks like you can open character creation and look at cavalier. The first class feature displayed is the animal companion, and the icon is a red fox on a brown background. Any class which offers this feature will immediately grant a pet of the type you choose when you reach the level that gives the feature (most cavalier subclasses get it at first level, but you can see that Standard Bearer gets it at level 5 if you scroll down). Keep in mind that pets only level up when you take a level in a class which has an animal companion feature, so too much multiclassing can reduce the maximum level of your pet beyond what you can recover with the feat called Boon Companion (which will make up for a difference of 4 levels). Some classes can get pets through less obvious means, though! For example, Sylvan sorcerers are the only sorcerers which can get pets, any cleric with the Animal domain gets one, and paladins have it tucked away in their Divine Bond feature at level 5. Look closely when browsing classes and subclasses!

I just tried your build, and got a bug, it seems. Skald-s song does not give any bonuses, except to damage (+3), and to armor (+5). Even skald himself does not benefit from his own song (or rage stances for that matter). Is it a known bug?

I personally prefer going for Cleave and Cleaving Finish very early instead of boosting two Rage Powers. In my case I start to have two pets only since level 6 or something, when Sosiel joins the party (before only Lann has a pet after switching to Ranger Demonslayer or Divine Hound). Or even when Daeran gets it through Nature Revelation on level 7. This means, I don't need Lesser Beast Totem this early at all. Other than that, you also may delay Extend Spell for much later game, because it becomes useful only since level 9 or something, there are no useful buffs on Level 1 anyway to extend them. You can take Weapon Proficiency or anything else you like instead. Such a build makes the early game much more enjoyable for a non-so-pet-focused party.

They can be picked earlier indeed, I just like having as much Rage boosts as early as possible. Because the later Rage Power picks aren't that useful, you can delay these for that time.

Yes! But when it comes to Rage Powers, usually only as far as different Stances. For example, Barbarian can share Reckless Stance, while Skald goes for Lethal Stance. Only thing that really stacked Rage Power wise to me, was the extra Bite attack from Animal Fury.

Stacking buffs definitely is the way to go! Ideally just Skald + Cleric is more than enough. Paladin can help a lot too through, the same for Shaman Hexes.

I prefer any of the high crit range weapons, so besides Fauchard: Falchion, Rapier & Scimitar. Kukris can work too but are better for Dual Wielding. Or if you wanted one as the main character, the Gravesinger Axe is overall the best crit weapon in the game!

Abundant Casting is picked since the Ranger Support spells we really want more slots of, Sense Vitals & Instant Enemy, cannot be extended to 24h, at least not for a Ranger, and Instant Enemy requires you to target the enemy too. Limitless Rage should work for classes that have the Rage feature similar to Barbarian like Bloodrager, but not Skald Inspire Rage I believe.

It is possible since you could just go full CHA instead while still retaining the buffs and Rage Powers. Skalds can only begin casting 5th spells at around level 13-14, by that point I don't think the Regen Hat is that useful anymore as your Divine characters already have access to many uses of Channel Positive Energy and powerful spells like Heal. Also, the Gloves of the Ambassador can easily be bought at that point, so Chapter 3, for a +2 to CHA too so you even get to keep the Hat!

It can definitely work with Azata, although yes, would be less powerful due to not having the special Trickster Crit Feats & Athletics 3 Trick. However, Azata is still a solid Mythic for melee due to the Heroic Might Superpower at Mythic 4. Nope! XP Share works like this: 1. If you have it off, then it only makes a difference if you have 5 or less active party members, and only active members will receive XP. 2. So long as you have 6 active party members, no matter how many characters are on the "bench", you'll always get same XP regardless, so it is best to turn XP Share On.

Yes! Actually one of my favorite classes for the main character, since there is no Skald/Bard companion. With Trickster path you really become OP and support your party even better as they'll also get acccess to the special Trickster critical boosting feats. Plus you can still attack + cast spells just ifne during battle too as all your support abilities can be used as prebuffing before battle.

Mostly because Skalds don't have that many buffs for that, and we get a really high number of spell slots for the buffs we need through just Abundant Spells. Lesser Extend Rods then help increase their duration.

I am having some issues understanding this build. I put a Skald merc in my party and the only difference I really see are my monk's unarmed attacks are now much weaker because the unarmed attacks are now claw and bite attacks. Also, the rest of my party does not seem to get any bite or claw attacks unless I remove their weapons, which seems counter-productive. Is it just the pets that benefit from these attacks at low levels and I should not be running a Skald with beast totems if there is a monk in my party?

The Pets are the ones that truly benefit from extra Claws, especially Pets that only start with a single attack like Dog, Wolf, Boar, Triceratops. Bite attacks though are added to everyone, including Pets that already have Bites. They will show in the Martial Tab. Monk is a special case, because you rely on UNARMED Strikes only for most of your powerful abilities to work, you will lose attacks/damage if you let your Fists become Claws. It's why I recommended in my recent Lich Monk Guide not picking Beast Totem with the Skald OR simply choosing Deny Rage in the abilities Tab with your Monk, so all your other party members will still benefit from it.
