Will McFadden is joined by Sam Monson, the lead NFL analyst at Pro Football Focus and co-host of the PFF NFL Podcast. Sam shares his thoughts on Atlanta's selection of Michael Penix Jr. and why their logic makes sense, even if it cost the Falcons their choice of defensive prospect. He also divulges his expectations for Atlanta this season and what could potentially hold the Falcons back. Finally, Will and Sam discuss offensive coordinator Zac Robinson, who spent time working with PFF before joining the Rams' coaching staff. Enjoy!

WOW a level headed logical discussion about why the falcons picked penix. Almost impossible to find. Even if you disagree with the plan its wild for all these people on the internet to keep saying there was no plan. It's very simple to understand why this was done. 😂

If you line his numbers up against the other 5 QB …Penix wins and numbers are better

Personally I have never seen a draft expert who really was hyped about an edge in the 3rd round if he wasn’t a combine warrior. I believe our draft was to set up depth on the front line because we will possibly move Troy Anderson to the outside linebacker spot where he can use his athleticism and think less. If you used him as the edge I’m sure he could bring pressure. He has a build that fits that mold better

Sam has the best take on this I’ve seen. Great interview

The pff guys are really close with zac robinson. They have inside info about the pick that many dont. Zac also has a really good eye for qb and has a good track record of that when he was with pff. If he liked penix there is a damn good reason.

Yes, great interview, excellent insights. The elephant in the room: can they elevate out of a weak pass rush? I think they need more help than they got in the draft.

Nice interview. Adam shelter said that it is was 25 mill on cap, 2026 its like 5 mill on cap. We can move on from Kirk next year if it dont work or if penix is great . But I’m glad we got penix. Rise up 🏹 9:51

I like Penix. I’m glad he’s a Falcon. But I think how we went about getting him is wrong. Get Cousins. Yes. Get Penix. Yes. Get BOTH? I don’t think so. BUT, we’re committed. Let’s make it work. And I go back to before Bartkowski. I remember Fulton Kuykendall. John Zook. Those guys. I am definitely hoping for the best from Cousins and Penix.

Pat Mahomes was pick 10 after Alex smith went to afc championship game that year and had like 3 winning seasons in a row. 12:58

For this pick to NOT make sense... you would have to say your solid bet is .. Draft a defensive player (even though the rest of the NFL told you none was eye pop'n because none was selected in the first 14 picks) And you would have to sale that you are a one 8th overall pick in a meh defensive draft away from playoff run with kirk Cousins. OR Maybe just maybe Your management can self evaluate and see that Kirk Cousins is a 78win 70 loss 2 tie career record QB That he has 16 wins to 47 losses vs teams with a winning record (put that in perspective Lamar Jackson had 8 wins vs teams with winning records by DOUBLE DIGITS in 2023 ALONE!!!!!..... 13 years and only involved in 16 wins vs teams over .500.............................. 3 and 13 on Monday Night football (2 of those wins vs the Bears last few years ... yea the team with the 1st pick in the draft).. speaks to this theme of shrinking in clutch prime time games. Maybe they saw that Kirk Cousins has 1 playoff win in 13 years (we have had 3 presidents in that time) IS it REALLY a solid bet to go all in for a playoff run over expanding your window of opportunity and getting a QB you BELIEVE in for the future? Which sounds more reasonable guys. Placing your bet in Kirk Cousins making a playoff run at 36 years old coming off injury looking at his resume. OR A decade window with a young QB you are high on Which one sounds more reasonable? .. which one sounds more logical?

You seem to have excluded a few options in your analysis there. From trading back to taking Odunze. The pick can makes sense in isolation, but combining the pick with signing Kirk does not. Not to mentio lacklustre FA activity. You are also asking us to trust an evaluator with a thus far dubious record in the draft.
@shankdiddy9045
@shankdiddy9045 Месяц назад
@@Nicho_Ldn Again, you have to be betting on a QB to do something he has at no point ever done.... In fact he would be a sub .500 QB if not for 2022 where they went 13 and 3 in a burning trash can of NFC north at that time.. A A Ron at the end... Detroit just getting Goff (he started off 4 wins in his first 23 games)... and the Bears who was on the Justin Fields struggle bus... and a overall down NFC. You would have to be that Kirk Cousins at 36 years old coming off a ruptured Achilles Tendon is NOW gonna spark playoff run. I had my achilles Rupture literally days before Aaron Rodgers had his. And i promise you it takes a good 18 months to get back to normal... he can play after 10 to 12 months but in that window it is a BIG chance of reinjury and being below 100%. You have to be beating on a lot of hail mary scenarios in order for that plan to work out. Penix Jr isn't dan Marino(or is he?), and any rookie isn't a lock to be good. But his tape shows a much higher ceiling and chance to be good for a LONG time. ....... And this a League that had 68 QB's play in 2022 and 66 play in 2023.. Falcons had 3 play. I be much more willing to bet on a few years of cousins and Penix Jr transition.. than a short window of all chips in the middle of the table for Kirk Cousins.... . He seems like a guy who shrinks vs the spot light. I mean he is going on a media tour about all of this which isn't a very "strong" position.

Will said Mooney 4.38 and Moore 4.29 aren't the deepest NFL threats in the league. Pitts 4.44. Who are the deepest threats in the league ans how many teams actually have them? Smh let's stop trying to move the goal post. As if Odunze 4.45 is the deepest 😂, Polk ran a 4.52, McMillian ran a 4.47. These were Penix WRs at Washington when he threw for 4,5K+ passing yards. Point is a true QB can get the most out of his WRs which Penix did two yrs back to back as the last QB since Mahones at TexTch throwing back to back seasons of 4,5K+ passing yard seasons. Don't try to compare Penix to Bo Nix, McCarthy, Maye, Daniels to Penix they don't have the passing yards, TDs, or pressure to carry a team that Penix had the past two seasons.. it's not even close. People like to find issue where there isn't an issue because they don't agree with what someone else did. It's crazy to me. As a person who just covers sports or a team. But you aren't a fan of the team. Your job isn't to agree or disagree with what the team does. Its to be neutral and see it for what they say they are trying to do. You can't be neutral if you allow your feelings and ego to get involved. You can't ask about positions that are totally dependent on QB play for success and then say outside of the lack of quality and functionality of the QB position did you get what you expected. That's like asking someone about a car without the engine and saying hay did you get what you thought out of this luxury car? How could I 🤪 crazy it has no engine. 😂 what are we doing???? Ask me that question after a yr or two with Cousins that's why the Falcons got Cousins to get the most out of London, Pitts, Robinson and their Offense.

So genuinely going all-in with Kirk and the current roster would have been ‘playing it safe’? What would you call kicking the can down the road with Penix whilst leaving critical weaknesses in the roster, then? A scheme to secure Terry/Raheem’s job security for three years and yet another transitional period? And before citing last season’s defense as supporting evidence, people need to acknowledge the reality that Campbell and Dupree have left. It’s not outrageous to suggest that our likely output in 2024 could be worse. Monson didn’t sound overly optimistic about the Falcons receiver depth, I noticed.
