PfSense FTTH Bell - Bypass HH3000 

I'm starting to hate mine too. What's the main benefits

I think that voip service is another vlan (talking of the bell voip service)... Haven't messed with that actually, I only have internet at home...

check video description. There is as well some pcie network card with 1 2 or 4 sfp ports direclty built in. I would ensure that a good fan is blowing on the card since sfp modules (mine) is getting quite hot...

If you respect the vlans and the pppoe over vlan config in your router / pfsense... yeah, it will work.

My hardware is a pizzabox dell business pc, regular secretary computer... with intel NIC's and a sata hdd... and pfsense installed straight on it. My line is 150/150 (4ms ping) but bell offers me speed up to 1gbps...

Then what model of transducer do they put in the same modem?? to get you 1.5 gbps? they sell it after all...

@@tommyb.6064 It has nothing to do with the model of transducer - it has everything to do with the optical side of the board supporting sync rates other than 1gig and 10gig - which requires additional hardware and firmware. My setup is a Mikrotik CCR2004, and I install the GPON SFP from the HH3000 in one of the SFP+ ports on the CCR2004. It will not sync at 2.5gig - only at 1gig. The only devices that will sync at 2.5gig (which is what the GPON SFP syncs to in the HH3000) are the ones I listed above. There are plenty of posts on DSLreports about this topic. Follow-up - I probably wasn't clear about the 2.5gig sync piece and I apologize for that! At Layer 1, on the optical side, like with anything else electrical (or ethernet if you prefer).....you have a fixed sync rate for the physical media. Like on an 802.3bt switch - you sync at one of 4 rates when auto-negotiation is done - 1, 2.5, 5 and 10gig. In the case of a GPON optical port, that is different from an electrical port (like an ethernet port) - you are dealing with optical wavelengths, different standards etc. Keeping it simple, for GPON, your Layer 1 sync is 2.48832 Gb/s down and 1.244 Gb/s up - which is what an HH3000 will sync to. That is what I meant by the "optical side" of the media adapter needing to sync - they do not at these rates. Instead of syncing at this GPON asymmetrical rate, they sync at 1Gig. The 1.5Gb/s service from Bell is just a virtual circuit on top of the GPON/SFP/SMF cable that runs into your house. So, if indeed you are a customer with the 1.5Gig service, you replace the HH3000 with your own router + the "10 Gig optical transciever/media adapter" from Amazon (pick your brand), it will sync at 1Gig, and you won't see anything close to the 1.5Gig service offered by Bell when you run a Speedtest. Maybe there IS a media adapter that on the optical side, knows how to sync with a GPON optical signal - but - I have yet to see one. All this to say - it's just a warning to people wanting to bypass the Bell CPE and they have the 1.5GB/S service from Bell. In my setup - because the Mikrotik's optical ports will not sync at GPON rates - I only have the 1G/bs service, because the 1.5 is a waste. But - I am planning on picking up the Ubiquiti XG 6 PoE to get around that - so that I can get the FULL 1.5Gb/s service from Bell, and have that rate to all my 10Gig PC's/Mac's in my home network.

I currently have mine setup to do what I described above......I have the hh3000 with Bells 1.5G service, and I am getting speed test results above 1.7G to all my 10gig Mac's/PC's. In my case, I took the two optical ports and configured VLAN 35 and 36 on ingress and egress up to my main mikrotik router. I am not currently using the 10gig Cu ports, but I assume they should just work without needing to configure anything, so it should be as easy as just plugging in your 10gig devices.

PfSense tourne sur un PC standard avec 3 cartes réseau pci-e dans mon cas. Bell ne "supporte" pas cette façon de faire au sens ou le support technique ne sais même pas que ça se fait sauf peut-être quelques techniciens qui font plus d'installations business. Tu peux le faire avec ton compte résidentiel, en fait, le tech qui est venu m'installé m'a dis que dans le cas des installations affaire, ils fournissaient au lieu du HH3000, un convertisseur comme j'en ai acheté un et un router peut être le 2000... Dans le cas des grandes entreprises, beaucoup de Routers de nos jours viennent directement avec le port SFP. Pour ce qui est de PfSense, J'ai récemment lu que nous devrions nous intéresser a OpnSense à la place de PfSense qui à un certain moment donné à cessé d'être développé en open source selon ce que j'ai compris. L'ancètre de PfSense est MonoWall et c'est le même gars qui etait derrière MonoWall, PfSense (jusqu'à un certain point) et qui s'est redirigé vers OpnSense, à ce que j'ai compris. Dans ma prochaine révision matérielle, je regarderai pour migrer sur OpnSense, mais pas avant. Ça marche, j'y touche pas!

De mon côté j’ai la fibre 1g de Bell qui entre sur la borne 3000, mais leur wifi couvre pas suffisamment et leur kit de puck (mesh) est instable. J’ai opté pour mettre mon propre wifi mesh avec 3 unités qui sont connecté sur le 3000, mais si je peux éliminer le 3000 avec ton setup ça serait encore mieux.

@@ericchabot2174 Ouais, si ta une grande maison... ou une bibliothèque, ca prends 3 access point ou plus... si tes config sont bien faites, comme a la biblio, les appareils changent d'antenne automatiquement.

bell dsl isn't that much complicated... just use any modem, set a wrong username / password to it, connect your router to any of the 4 lan ports of it and set its wan setting to pppoe, most old modem wiill pass thru the pppoe packets... older modems could be set manually in "bridge mode" disabling the routing part of it... then they simply act as a "dummy transcoder" from dsl-rj11 to rj45 straight up. It's been a while i haven't messed with dsl, anywhere cable is available, I clearly prefer docsis3 over vdsl2...

In deed... The tech that did the installation gave it to me, print screened his business phone app... but he told me that you can change it on your online my bell portal... and i'm quite sure that if you call them they can provide that information as well...tho you might have to call a few times to get someone who's old enough to remember what it is since, i'm quite sure that nowadays, it's not something they train every people on the phone to know and manage anymore. I's baked in the modem they send to you and linked with your account probably via barcodes they scan here and there during the setup process for everything to line up a more quicker way...

I've tried configuring the edge router, the way shown in this video, and doesn't work. Do you know what you did outside the basic config with PPOE and VLAN to get it working? It's like you have to perform extra settings to get it to work with Bell.

y'a moyen de faire passer le tout sans le box, meme avec la tv et le téléphone de bell. Cependant, je n'ai pas ces services chez moi et je n'ai pas explorer ces configurations. Mais... ça se fait. l'yronie c'est que parfois sur RU-vid, une vidéo de 720p de 3 mbps plante alors que j'ai 150 mbps... et c'est pas ma ligne (entièrement filaire) qui niaise, c'est youtube qui prends un respire et ensuite continu... n'importequoi. lol

si j'avais fait le vidéo en français j'aurais eut le 10e de vues... lol

le hh3000 ne fais pas de bridge et le mode dmz est défectueux dans le firmware et bell savent pas c'est quoi le dmz.. à 35 $ sur amazon, paie toi une faveur et achète toi le convertisseur ...

not sure this applies.. single vs multi modes are optical modes... and sfp to ethernet adapter don't deal with optics... well, I might be wrong but... I went straight with the 35$ converter and that works flawlessly!

si tu a jamais gossé avec l'aiguillage de la réseautique dans une vm ou les mac adress hardware et software parfois sont mélangeantes tu va peut etre rusher la première fois

PfSense is not a web server to host website... but yeah you can host a web server at home with perhaps any router as long as your configure your port forwarding properly

tu peux connecter le GBIC de la fibre a un media converter, environ 35$ sur amazon, et brancher en cuivre dans une de tes nic, tu vas devoir utiliser ton user b1 et mettre le vlan 35. Le gbic prends environ 1 minute à connecter au debut

à ma connassance le h3000 fait pas le bridge mode. je vais tester le convertisseur, demain avec une vm. je m'en suis acheter un.. c'est pas cher.. si j'y pense je te dirai ce que ça donne comme vitesse

The bridge mode is not available on the HH3000 and the DMZ feature is actually buggy in the firmware itself and .... bell representative don't even know what dmz is. to go beyond certain speeds, you have to be sure that your router can "nat" "throughput bandwidth" at the required speed.... because a router isn't just a dummy switch. All traffing going thru is passed thru the cpu bus and pass and block rules muss be applied to every single packet so at those speeds it's getting quite cpu intensive. cheap routers might have gigabit interfaces but might not be able to nat at more than ... 150 mbps...

@@belltech8293 Well, I'm quite sure that the optical cable that comes into the hh4000 can be unplugged... and that if you purchase by yourself the poper sfp for the wavelength used... that it will work as well. It's not rocket science!

Monte toi un PfSense / OpnSense ou achète toi une boîte déjà montée. PfSense c'est un logiciel... comme windows, au sens ou tu mets le cd dans un pc et tu boot dessus et t'installe le logiciel de routage... et tant qu'il y a 2 cartes réseau dans le pc, tu assigne une pour l'internet et l'autre pour le réseau local que tu envoie dans une switch réseau ou un router standard pour lequel tu aura désactiver les fonctions de routage pour ne garder que le wifi actif ( et profiter de la switch de 5 port ). Cherche sur amazon, aliexpress pour des pfsense / opnsense box... tu as les oficielles et les clones... certains sont très bon. sinon moi je roule avec un vieux desktop sur une tablette dans la cave. Tu peux aussi te pratiquer et installer pfsense / opnsense dans une machine virtuelle avec VirtualBox.

@@tommyb.6064 Merci Tommy ça fini que j'ai essayé avec mon qnap mais c'était trop lent, j'ai trouvé un router asus haut de gamme avec le vlan dessus et ça marche numéro 1 vive le hairpin (j'ai un serveur Web c'était chiant) seul hick le port 25 je crois qu'il est vraiment bloqué chez bell c'est le seul qui l'est le test 80,21, 22 tout est open

@@tommyb.6064 En fait mon QNAP a 4 port RJ45, donc peut etre configuré comme un routeur (c'est un gros modèle que j'ai) et pour ce qui est du port 25 c'est le port SMTP mais j'aurais aimé hoster mon propre mail serveur mais Bell le bloque malheureusement.

y'a des router qui font les routes du vlan aussi.. ac1900 cheap mais pas testé.. et ça te permet d'éviter de jouer avec pfsense..

@@bloodbustazvideos4238 pas sur que la ps5 peut "pppoe" vers bell. c'est pour ça que ça te prends un router entre les deux. Windows à un module pppoe intégré.. mais les consoles s'attenent à ce qu'un routeur leur attribuent une addresse ip et leur donnent à manger. et comme dis jean michel, en plus le pppoe faut le faire passer "un tuyau dans un autre" avec le vlan 35 et ça, même windows ne sais pas faire. c'est pas tous les routeurs qui supportent le vlan tagging sur le wan.

I was wondering if you could use your own gpon thing that "is called apparently" the ont within an optical system... will they activate a third party ont or only one they provide themselves? No I don't know everything... I'm reading and learning all day.

@@tommyb.6064 The GPON/ONT that was provided by Bell has a serial number and that is needed to be the same in their system.

I'm reading that the 4000 doesn't come with a removeable sfp transducer... and despite that it's not removeable but internal, it is still there in the hh4000 and it is its mac address they activate on the network so if you buy a third party compatible gpon sfp adapter... they'll have to activate it on the network and i'm not sure if they would support that... is it possible for you to get instead a 3000? the transducer comes with it!!

Je ne veux pas le hh4000... je veux garder pfsense ou opnsense... et si je passe un jour à 1500 mbps... j'utiliserai simplement un convertisseur 10 gbps et hop ça marchera... comme toi sans leurs router... ça me limite pour des trucs plus avancés que je fais en réseautique...

Hmmm. I'm wondering what would someone gain from brute forcing into my pppoe account on the bell network. If you're on the network, you already have an active username or password. Should i put curtains on my windows as well?

Ton routeur a un port sfp?? et tu ne criss pas le transducer dans ton router? J'ai pas de télé de merde et pour la téléphonie j'utilise les services de VOIP. ms ... lache la téléphonie résidentielle ip de bell.. sérieux... fais plus de 10 ans mes amis et moi on est sur voip . ms
