To teach abroad with a PGCE: mainly independant, British, International schools anywhere in the world. But any country's education system: check with the ministry or whoever's in charge. In some countries PGCE+ experience might be recognised. Better check.

You can also teach in Australia, South Africa, other common wealth countries and the UAE.

You can definitely teach abroad with a PGCE plus a minimum of 2 years of relevant full time teaching experience in Commonwealth countries. I’ve been told this and read this countless times. Also, Taiwan only hires licensed teachers to work in their public schools; ESL teachers have to work for the private institutions which work either split shifts or afternoon/evenings. Sometimes an international school will hire you as an NQT, but it most likely won’t be a top school. Sometimes you may have to do an additional qualification to teach abroad such as IB, for example. I’ve taught EFL abroad but have now opted to do a secondary PGCE next year. Once I get my 2 years of experience I intend on going international (if not before then!). Many licensed teachers work in the UAE and are making tons of money. I know of a few.

Thanks, Lauren! I have a 4 year teaching experience in India and I am in two minds about pursuing a PGCE. I don't want to teach in the UK thereafter; I wanted to teach in countries like UAE, Germany, South Korea. Do you think it'd be possible?
@missjohnrox
@missjohnrox 4 года назад
Ankita Garg Hello. I know that to teach in South Korea you need to be a Native English speaker from either USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa. You don’t need a PGCE to teach there but you do need a university degree. Obviously TEFL certification helps and is a requirement in most schools, but not all. You should contact an ESL recruiter to get up-to-date info. They would be able to better advise you. A PGCE would put you on the top tier as far as salary is concerned. I have no idea about Germany though as I’ve never looked into teaching there.
@ankitagarg2540

Thank you so much, Lauren! :) Guess a PGCE Primary is worth the effort then. My aim is to teach all the academic subjects (english, math, science, etc) as a homeroom teacher in Primary grades, which is what I have been doing for four years in India as well. I just want to teach in countries other than India now and a PGCE seems to be the best route for that.

Great video! I had my QTS in English in 2012 (graduated in 2009 in English linguistics and literature) but I didn't start teaching until 3 years ago. I must add, it is in KS2 and mostly cover so actual planning is not involved. My question is: if I wanted to make the step to teach in secondary, would it be worth doing PGCA or just bite the bullet and apply for a job? Thanks for your answer?

Hi! Errr well the different is very subtle. PGCE is the name of the course, and QTS is what you obtain after the PGCE. It means you're allowed to teach in the UK. You can obtain through other means though (but you'd have to do your research :) )

Hi! The PGCE can be 2 years if you do it part time. After the PGCE you can do your NQT year (new qualified teacher). I never did it! But if you want to teach in England, you will have to do it. Otherwise, I don't think so! You get a bursary for your PGCE in most subjects and depending on your grades. The amount changes every year

With the workload being a lot, how did you find the work-life balance? Were you able to still have downtime for yourself and how was stress management? I'm asking because I had a really hard time with managing my mental health in my undergrad studies due to the high levels of stress and my low tolerance/trouble with time management etc). I still graduated with good grades and have since been learning to manage more self care in general. Ofc undergrad is different and maybe my very academic undergrad study will have prepared me for this, but I am curious to know on that level how the general experience was I'm also from abroad so I'd like time to actually go out and explore the city and places around. Are there sufficient breaks to do this?
@KevinAbroad
@KevinAbroad 3 года назад
Hi there! I can obviously only answer based on my experience. But basically, I had no worklife balance because I was working around 60 hours a week. So I didn't really have that much time to socialise. When I did have some time, it was to relax and recover from the work load. You do have more time during the half terms and holidays so you can do a bit more of socialising during these times. But basically I wouldn't recommend to do a PGCE if you want time to explore the country a bit because it's very intense in my experience

@@KevinAbroad Thanks for the response! I had another Canadian tell me that the PCGE was the most intense curriculum that they did compared to anything else before. @palomamynssen9036 Год назад
@@KevinAbroad Ok! I was just thinking if they hire non-native speakers :/ I'm worried about it, in case they prefer native speakers to teach English. Also, do you think Portuguese is a suitable language to study PGCE as Modern Language? Or is it too specific? I was thinking to apply to English in Secondary because I don't think Portuguese is that common in schools. Thank you for your reply :)
@KevinAbroad
@KevinAbroad Год назад
I don't think they can legally require anyone to be a native speaker. They might obviously make sure you have the appropriate level in English to teach (which makes sense). As for Portuguese, that's actually one of the languages I wanted to teach (you need 2 at least, unless things have changed). So instead of going for French and Portuguese, I had to do French and Spanish because there wasn't any school offering Portuguese in Brighton (where I did my PGCE). So to teach Portuguese you'd have to check there are schools offering it. Not an easy task but doable!

@LynxMajic 4 года назад
Hi, thanks for the tips. After some research, this seems to be the case of you getting a bursary and funding because you offered a shortage subject. Similar for maths, physics, chemistry. What about those with a language degree in useless languages? I assume you teach secondary? What about funding/bursary for primary? Thanks!
@KevinAbroad
@KevinAbroad 4 года назад
Useless languages? :o. The degree doesn't actually matter. It's a little weird but there were people in my course with a degree in psychology who were teaching Spanish and French! ahah. But if your subject knowledge is in a language that's less common, you need to find a school where these languages are taught. If for example you speak Mandarin but there's no school where you live which offers it then... you can't really train in it, if you see what I mean. But after your PGCE you can teach any language For primary I can't answer as I didn't do it.
