Angus Scrimm made the Tall Man a horror icon. He is still missed today, & will be for many generations to come, but his creepy character in the 'Phantasm' franchise will always stay immortal.
This movie feels like a bad dream the way the dialogue is spoken, movie score, cinematography. The concept of the movie, it always made me feel like I was in a nightmare. One of the best to watch for Halloween time
Lucky you, I've heard he was actually a pretty nice guy (which is ironic when you consider that the character he's known for playing is an otherworldly monster that literally enslaves the dead...) Isn't funny how the actors who play as horror movie villains can actually be some of the sweetest people you'll ever meet in real life?
You would have to go to a place of judgment, to be fair...If the Reaper looks like Jebidiah though, I'd still go with him. It's just business unless you make it personal or annoy him.
Greeeaat. This will be playing in my head as I walk the empty hallways at work before clocking out. 😜 I'll be checking the shadows for the little troll guys and the Tall Man.
This movie shows what a genius Don coscarelli really is underrated something special rip Angus we'll always fondly remember you gentle giant 👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️
The choir part totally completes the theme song...Rest in Peace, Angus Scrimm! You brought some sheer terror to the film industry, while also being a wonderful man in real life.
In the original Phantasm (1978), This was the theme. They even had a disco version that was playing in the canteen that Jody picks the blonde lady up in. They didn't use the heavier one until part 3. Part 2 was the same tempo and measure, it was just re-recorded. So, it had that "pretty" sound that they were getting in the mid 80's. A fan made a great heavy metal remake of it in 2009 to celebrate it's 30th anniversary.. All in all.... I would have to say that this is the 3rd most influential Horror Movie Theme to come out of the 1970's.
Phantasm main theme by Fred Myrow and Malcolm Seagrave. Fredric Myrow (July 16, 1939 - January 14, 1999) was an American composer. He is known for composing the soundtracks for Phantasm, Soylent Green and Scarecrow. Early life. Myrow was the son of Josef Myrow and grandson of Irving Mills. Career. Myrow was a friend of Jim Morrison and provided the music for Morrison's experimental film HWY: An American Pastoral. Myrow co-wrote the score for the film Phantasm in 1979. In 2015, the sound track was re-released on vinyl. Myrow was also a pianist, and performed live concerts of his compositions. Malcolm Seagrave was born on 30 March 1928 in Tracy, California, USA. He was a composer, known for Phantasm (1979), and Notte (1983). He died on 5 January 2001 in Los Angeles, California, USA.
This music takes me someplace else ... powerful! “Most lead lives at worst so painful, at best so monotonous, poor and limited that the urge to escape, the longing to transcend themselves if only for a few moments, is and has always been one of the principal appetites of the soul.” ― Aldous Huxley
I love this movie, and the fact that it has such an iconic main theme makes it that much more memorable. (Ahhh, alliteration)... I really want to introduce one of my stepsons to this movie- he’s already got pretty good taste in movies, and I feel it’s definitely my duty to show him the classics that he didn’t have exposure to before. He was a big fan of “Halloween” and “The Thing” already, with no influence from me, but I was really happy to have showed him “The Exorcist” (speaking of iconic theme music!), and I’m looking forward to watching the original “Suspiria”, “Dead Alive”, the first two “Hellraiser” movies, and several others with him. Thanks for posting this- I haven’t seen “Phantasm” in almost two decades, and I was trying to remember the main theme, yet it was eluding me. The first two notes after the intro and it came rushing back- what a classic. Thanks again, and I hope that you and your loved ones are safe and healthy-
i lv the music in original 1979 film it really set the scene and creepy as well its a shame it took so many years for part 2 to come, brilliant films my favourite is part 1 with creepy music
Does anyone hear a melodic link between this theme song and The Metro from Berlin? The RU-vid channel Professor of Rock noted this to Berlin singer Terri Nunn in a recent interview.
horror movies died in the eighties. a few broke through into the mid nineties like candyman but then everything turned to shit and the only way forward was meta. all through the history of film the horror genre has fluctuated like this. we are merely currently on the downward wave. the crest will rise again with either new technology being applied to the medium or some understanding of the world beyond our ken being finally discovered from which to draw inspiration. fear not (pun intended).
I tend to agree, but ... If you havent' - you should watch the following newer Horror movies. Darkness Falls Mirrors Oculus These are just a few great ones. There's also a great one with Robert DeNiro , but I can't remember the name, but it was quite good - and also one with a small playhouse in the back of a garden which was possessed by something evil (pretty sure it's not cabin in the woods).
Oxygenic Darkness Falls and Mirrors are eh, but Oculus is great. The Babadook is also worth checking out. As far as movies with the same kind of surreal off-kilter vibe as Phantasm, check out Under the Skin and Beyond the Black Rainbow.
A BRILLIANT masterpiece! Thank You SO Much for sharing this! This encapsulates 70s horror music so well! This one and The Exorcist take me right back to the 70s; both AMAZING and brilliantly composed works of art! Definitely Two Thumbs Up for sharing this!
I recently saw the whole saga (minus P2) in order, in one week. I'm now obsessed with the franchise and lore and Phantasm 2 and Bubba Hotep are on my todo list. This track drove me nuts while watching Phantasm 1 because I was certain it was Tubular Bells (the Exorcist theme). Of course it isn't but I had to listen to both of them back to back to figure that out.
Bobgrey You've got to see Phantasm 2! It's the movie which made me a "Phan". It might not be as groundbreaking as the original, though it's a Rollercoaster from start to Finish!
I remember when this film first came out, it was edge of the seat stuff. I just bought the 5 film collection which is pretty awesome except the fifth movie. I didn't really like the way they ended the franchise. Still, an awesome series and an awesome theme for it as well! Thanks for the share FLYBAT !
Nowadays, the movie and theme became in a masterpiece, AND scares More than today's CGI "horror"movies, ok, honorable exceptions but really few movies get The cult movie rate as Phantasm...
Awesome kid's horror movie! My greatest fears as a kid; loss, separation, being orphaned, the dark and what COULD be in it. This movie hits all those notes... !
