"Phantom Ship", also known as "The Mystery of the Marie Celeste" is one of the early films from Hammer Film Productions and was directed by Denison Clift. The leading actor is Béla Lugosi. The story is based on the history of the ship Mary Celeste. The ship was found floating near Portugal in 1872 without a crew. The film is an attempt at a rather unspectacular explanation of the events around the well-known spirit ship, without supernatural occurrences.
Captain Briggs (Arthur Margetson) and Captain Morehead (Clifford McLaglen) are best friends. Capt. Morehead is in love with Sarah (Shirley Grey). He brings Briggs to New York to meet her. Briggs himself falls in love with her. Sarah also falls in love with Briggs. Both men propose to her the same day. Sarah chooses Briggs. Sarah and Briggs open their marriage plans to Morehead and he gets furious with jealousy. He's also mad with Briggs for going behind his back. But Briggs tells him that he will marry Sarah even if that means the end of their friendship. As the couple plans to sail, the husband - Briggs is short on crew. He asks Morehead to forgive him and help. Morehead agrees and sends a man, Volkerk Grot (Herbert Cameron), not to help, but to do something to the ship. Briggs also recruits some other men, including Anton Lorenzen (Béla Lugosi) who is a sailor who has suffered a lot and is about to break down.
As the sail begins, the crew realizes that there is a murderer among them who is killing them off one by one. Meanwhile a crewmember tries to rape Sarah, but Lorenzen saves her by killing the man. But then he cries because he can't stand the pain of killing a man.
Soon, everybody has died or disappeared except 1st mate Bilson, Lorenzen and a third crewmember, Ponta Katz (Gunner Moir). They decide that one of them is a killer and they will soon find out. Katz realizes that Lorenzen could not kill, he was too soft, so he runs after Bilson. Bilson shoots Katz and then celebrates with Lorenzen on becoming the new Captain of Ship, making plans for future.
Lorenzen gets mad and tells Bilson that it is he who was shanghaied 6 years before, on the same ship. And he was doing all this to get revenge. Then he shoots Bilson and throws him into the sea. Just after killing Bilson, Lorenzen is hit on the head by the boom. He runs everywhere on ship in hope of finding Bilson, and in his madness he jumps off the ship.
The ship drifts with the wind until it is spotted by another ship. The ship is totally abandoned - except for a black cat! A final scene shows Morehead handing money to his man Grot, commenting "I am thinking of Briggs and her, dead!"
---
Directed by Denison Clift, produced by Henry Passmore, written by Denison Clift (story) and Charles Larkworthy (scenario), starring Béla Lugosi as Anton Lorenzen, Shirley Grey as Sarah Briggs, Arthur Margetson as Capt. Benjamin Briggs, Edmund Willard as Toby Bilson, Dennis Hoey as Tom Goodschard, George Mozart as Tommy Duggan, Johnnie Schofield as Peter Tooley, Gunner Moir as Ponta Katz, Ben Welden as 'Sailor' Hoffman, Clifford McLaglen as Capt. Jim Morehead, Tom Bastable as Olly Deveau, Matt Ramage as Andy Gilling, Terence De Marney as Charlie Kaye, Edgar Pierce as Arian Harbens, Herbert Cameron as Volkerk Grot, Wilfred Essex as Horatio Sprague, James Carew as James Winchester, Monti DeLyle as Portunato, Alec Fraser as Commander Mahon, Mary B and Mitchell as the ship Marie Celeste.

Béla Lugosi was indeed a fine actor. Incidentally, most people mispronounce his name. First of all, in Hungarian an accent is used to mark a long vowel, not a stress, so the first name is pronounced Bay-la. Also all Hungarian names are accented on the first syllable, and an "s" is pronounced "sh" (the "s" sound is spelled "sz" as in the composer Liszt), so the full name is pronounced (caps indicate stressed syllable) "BAY-la LU-go-shee." And finally, Hungarians always put the family name first, so in Hungary he would be Lugosi Béla. Just in case you are interested!

Interestingly, this was considered his only true dramatic role. It was not considered a horror film. He wanted to play dramatic, comedic and romantic roles, but was typecast from "Dracula" on.
@prevost8686
@prevost8686 5 лет назад
It was inevitable that Dracula would typecast him. There’s never been an actor since him that was more “born” for that role. His accent, appearance, and mannerisms doomed him(or blessed him) to always be a horror fiend. His experience in Hollywood doesn’t make me feel any sense of pity for him. His wounds from WW1 that led to lifelong addiction to morphine, heroin, and alcohol do cause me to feel sorry for him. I’ve seen everything he’s ever done on film and I think I enjoy the serial series “The Phantom Creeps” the best. They were corny, low budget, and fun. I can still imagine the little boys of that day about to go crazy waiting to see what would happen on the next episode.
@JamesGilbert_
@JamesGilbert_ 3 года назад
Even more interesting is that he was born before _Dracula_ was published. So the role that he was deemed "born to play", that he did so in two motion pictures and several times onstage, was a literary character that came into existence after he was already born. His death in the 1950s even puts into perspective how bizarre the passage of time can be.

This is a very dark film. Every male character in the film is a horrible man. Grey as the Captain's wife is somewhat decent, yet she is involved with the other sea captain and she is the reason for the betrayal between the two men. Even Margetson as Captain Briggs is a man full of conflicts. He appears decent to his wife yet acknowledges some of his crew has been shanghaied and he orders a beating when a sailor complains about food. The only decent human being is Lugosi. He is gentle with the cat. But he won't be gentle with those devils responsible for his current state.

+Wilhelm X I know its been 3 years since you posted but I thought I'd attempt an answer. Bela's character was obviously over-wrought, if not quite insane. I think he was both the gentle defender and the maniacal killer. When he got the knock on the head and fell to near unconsciousness and then woke up and then he woke up to realization and guilt for all the murder and mayhem he caused. He truly couldn't live with himself and so jumped overboard. At the very end, are you speaking of the savage scene? That is the jilted lover happy for what became of his former love and her husband.

Good movie. Yet the true accounts how it was found is friction. The ships captain who brought his wife and baby a board. On below deck the ships crew table was set food. It shows the crew starting to eat The ship show no signs of fowl play. The ships life boat was missing. There was no indication of anything wrong in the captains log. It believe they made one stop on a island. Before finishing the crossing on the Atlanta Ocean. Another fact they were going though the Bermuda Triangle. So whether it was simply bad luck or paranormal. With the crew gone. The ship and ocean will be keeping that secret for a very long time.

I believe some natives forced them off (w/out signs of foul play) & they met their fate. Perhaps the natives didn't care for the cargo, just the crew. Remember how the natives treated strangers in Tarzan? Well, that's what I think. Just my opinion 😕

@@msbrowngault There is a island Atlanta Ocean where they made have stop. As far as I know nobody has made a serious effort to locate the possible graves on this island. I want to add this. If Ships Captain thought there was any danger he wouldn't risk his wife and baby. The Captain knew his ship , had experience crew and rout he took many times over. To many times we think know how the world works. Only to find out how little we know. We become scare and say it's not possible. We then laugh it off and then say it couldn't happen. We get get angry at anybody who don't agree with us. You see we fighting human condition too! To your point about the Ships Captain, his family and ships crew. I don't think so. It wasn't a large island, not all Atlanta Ocean Island had jungles. As for native population. They came from colonists and their slaves. Could it happen your way maybe. But it was on regular sea rout.

The date says 1935 but the roman numerals say 1936.

It was originally released in the U.K. as the Mystery of the Mary Celeste in 1935. The title was changed to Phantom Ship and released in the U.S. in 1936. I guess the studios did think us Americans would have heard of the doomed ship, Mary Celeste. Really silly.
