@@tomcarl8021 Of course Mr. Collins has a good ear and understands talent, but was he there when The Who were? I understand after Steve left Genesis he was ready to jump ship, saying he would never leave except for The Who. By that time, they had a new drummer. A lot of 'cross pollination' in music then.

He's received a lot of flak over the years but nobody worked harder for their success. I read his bio last year, and in the 80's his workload was insane, running and touring a massive solo career while still somehow managing to tour and record with one of the world's biggest bands. He seems a down to earth guy who grabbed every opportunity that came his way.
@SuzyQ334

Just out of interest - where has Phil Collins received flak? Definitely not in the UK. And without meaning any rudeness Phil is a UK musician and we love him and TBH the British don't give a shit what foreigners think of him or any other of our musicians.

@@SuzyQ334there was a story about phil sending one of his ex wives as fax. That one the uk media when crackers over. When he moved to Switzerland, there were claims that he moved because of tax reasons and something about Phil and the conservatives, cant remember the details of that story. Yeah there are those that love to bash others for whatever reason whether it's for the right reasons or not
@PH-pn2yu
@PH-pn2yu 2 месяца назад
@SuzyQ334 The flak came from the press/media. Phil has often mentioned, and mentions again in his autobiography "Not Dead Yet", about how miserable the press was to him and how the UK press affected how UK audiences and fans responded to him and his music. However, Phil was, and is, greatly admired and appreciated worldwide for his amazing and varied skills and talents that he shared for over fifty years.

In '85 I was in a music store and found a drum transcription book of Phil Collins songs. I was 15 at the time and was in school band and I could read music a little. I thought that wouldn't it be cool to go buy all the tapes that cover this book and learn how to play like Mr. Collins! I already had some of his tapes. I spent every cent i had on this little project and it turned into the best drum lessons I ever had! Still have that book and another that covers Genesis as well. Only regret was not getting to see him live. but, "not dead yet", right? He is a big influence for me. I ended up playing drums in the US Navy Bands for 20 years and i'm still jamming to songs! Hey Phil I would like to thank you very much for being so candid in this documentary . It help me personally so much with the way I was looking things I have been playing drums since I was 4 yrs old .You came on my radar in 1978 when another drummer I did NOT like that brought your album school band rehearsal .So I resisted so at first.But you won me over in time . I first started playing your songs in a top forty band. With "turn it on" then " Easy lover" was a wedding song for me at the reception. The made a honeymoon video where I used " take me home" for clips of the plane ride home from Maui. Something that just happen at the end of Oct. I became a drum instructor for The School of Rock" we had a jam with all the instructors & I brought my Roland SPD- 11 that night they wanted to play " Something in Air " when it got to intro part I nailed it perfectly . The room went crazy I had played that for years & had the sound in programmed in the machine.But I give U full credit for that. I just did my solo album after doing production & drums for the lasts 30yrs & sang for the first time out in where others could hear. It's doing much better than I thought .Put it out last Feb. was worried that it would tank,but the pandemic had everyone in listening to to music & got lucky people found it. My life has been parallel in many ways except your massive success .but still happy where I landed by the way many of my go to licks come from U !Thank you very much again! I'll just watch the first few minutes and move on...well here I am One hour and 34 minutes later...I really enjoyed that. And a big part of that is the burden of always being a fan of Genesis and Phil Collins and yet hiding it a bit because of this mysterious hatred and dismissal that floats about. I always took Phil as being exactly as this documentary supports through the words of Phil and his family and other musicians and all those who speak on this film. It's an odd Catch 22 kinda thing. Phil gets placed on a pedestal by those who know him because he doesn't want to be on the pedestal. But all the others think he revels in it and think he must believe he is so special and so the tearing down begins. Very unfortunate. I kinda liked the way Geldof says it on here and though gruff in his words it's probably true -basically: "he's a great ordinary brilliant dude but if he reads all his reviews and ruminates over them, he's an idiot" Well Phil's not an idiot but he sure doesn't need reviews to tell him he's a very good person as is better evidenced by the words of his children on here and the many others on here who know him from experience.

Nice comment, I think the ‘mysterious hatred’ you talk about comes down to the fact that Phil- wether solo or with Genesis has never been considered ‘cool’. He’s always been a bit of an easy target.. this can be seen when punk came in, those bands were the complete opposite to the likes of genesis, Floyd & yes etc. As Geldof mentioned- Phil was everywhere in the 80’s so over familiarity breeds contempt as the saying goes. Spitting image used to rip into him almost weekly i remember. But the thing that really boiled my piss was I don’t think he’s ever had the acknowledgment from the non fans of just how much of an exceptional drummer Phil was. They just can’t get past the groovy kinda loves or one more night ballads. Ive no qualms in placing Phil easily amongst the top 5 rock drummers there’s ever been. It’s a shame to see him the way he is now, the years of touring & drumming have took their toll. It’s not a popular opinion but I hope he doesn’t put himself through the rigours of anymore future tours. I half think the recent tours in the last couple of years he’s done has been purely for his son- Nics benefit- to give him that leg up on the ladder. But that’s Phil, loves his family & generous to a fault. Thanks for the music Phil, God bless x

Still, till this day the two songs of his that had an enormous emotional effect on me were hold on my heart and Another Day in Paradise. There is something about hold on my heart that is so evocative, it lures you in and just brings a wave of Peace over me when I feel troubled.

I have my 10 top best drummers of the world here I go : Phil Collins Buddy Rich Gene Krupa Bill Bruford Steve Smith Carl Palmer Neil Peart Dennys Chambers Bill Cobham John Bonham I put Phil Collins at the top of the list coz I was inspired by his drumming to become a drummer, the rest of the list the order really dont matter
@TheHasenbock

john bonham last, i like that cuz many drummers find bonham the best Drummer lol. dont know why cuz he can do some Diddles on Thirds BD, L ,R or BD R, L or L, R, BD, or R, L, BD, or Bassdrum in the Middle Kombination? Thomas Lang alone is fourth x what Bonham technicly even be able to play...cuz he is almost be able playin mirror he has no weakness in any hand or foot. But technic alone does not make a great drummerm feelin is even more important in a band. hold back ure ego and only came in when its important... thats the real callange

Age 14, Mystic,CT vinyl record in 1993. Saw the back cover of Brand X Moroccan Roll. Wait! WTF? Is that...? It is! Hey everyone look at this. As this was a trip, we pooled our $ together and had to wait (LP players were rare AF in 1993.) a whole week. That listening party changed my 15 year old friends. This was not the ‘nother day I’m paradise man. This was a man to be respected b/c he is both a craftsman and an artist.

Really is sad to see him with Orianne now. Say whatever you want about him hooking up with someone so young, but he's hardly the first rock star to do so. And yes, I bet more often then not those women are gold diggers. Even so, there is a special place in hell reserved for Orianne. Phil took her back after she squandered the huge divorce settlement. He took care of her after she was practically paralyzed after a surgery. He's the reason she's able to go out and buy expensive cars and get drastic plastic surgery. How does she repay him? She gets married to another man in secret, moves him into Phil's house, hires armed guards to keep everyone out, and releases a lot of grotesque (and likely made-up) stories about how he's a pathetic old man who smells bad and can't get it up. This is the father of her children! I really hope she gets booted out of the house with her pockets empty, and that their kids side with their dad.

I could be wrong about this but I think it was Phil's Mum who discovered Jack Wild and got him cast as the artful Dodger in the movie version of Oliver, something connected to that, My Mum was in the same class as Jack Wild in nursery school, I think my grandparents knew his Aunt and Uncle.

Chester Thompson is diplomatic when he says Phil was an untrained drummer that played things in an unorthodox way. He meant he played it wrong, non military, no marching bands and making it harder than it needed to be because he wasn't taught how to do it properly. Thompson has played with the highest level musicians and probably never played with untrained players before. Listening to Collins though, you'd never know it.
@rk41gator
@rk41gator 2 года назад
No doubt Chester is a drummer's drummer. Great jazz feel and great 'chops'. Anyone who can even get an audition with Zappa has to be the creme de la creme. He was the drummer on Inca Roads! And his playing with Weather Report....are you kidding me? Phil was a fan of WR and when Chester said he would love to play with Genesis, Mr. Thompson did not even have to try out! Obviously he had great respect for Phil Collins or would have never played with them for decades. Phil is the most underrated drummer around rock or fusion. Listen to Brand X and hear his subtle chops. He is the real deal. (ps Phil DID have lessons)
