there was nothing tony and carmine could do about it. Phil was a house and Tony wasn't. they had to sit still and take it, It was among the buildings and condominiums. it was real real estate shit.
We know the house said that. It's incredible Phil only displayed his power to transform into a house once throughout the whole series. Truly terrifying
The whole delivery of the line 'we don't want your fucking drills' could not have been done better with Butch's expression and tone, makes the whole thing so hilarious 😂
Lil Carmine is one of those characters that you understand a little more each time you watch the series. He's kind of an enigma. He seems like a dunce on the surface but really he's just trying to live his life and distance himself slowly from all this craziness.
James Gandolfini was so good at the little things. The smile as the worst case scenario came to light. And as Carmine is yelling at Phil in the house, you can see Tony slowly turn sideways. He's already given up and he has one foot out already. He's accepted the war.
If anyone ever says “The shah of Iran became a house” Only the exclusive group of Sopranos RU-vid video commenters will ever know exactly what they mean
And there was nothing that we could do about it. Phil was a two story house, and Tony wasn’t. And we had to sit still and take it. It was among the Italians. It was real greaseball shit.
I think the smile is in character. Hes amused watching Carmine deal with the sh*t that he'd been putting up with this whole time. And the recognition of the worst case scenario gives him a resigned chuckle.
Yeah, I agree -- it was out of place for this scene, but since the viewer is likely looking at Carmine for those few seconds, they just decided to leave it in. Gradually, Gandolfini's face resumes a more serious appearance.
That house really was fascinating to me. I thought it was going to play a part in the conclusion somehow. Turns out it was Sheep’s Head Bay at a gas station next to his Suburban in front of wife & grandkids.
This scene is all about Phil’s lack of confidence as a leader, his genuine fear of Tony and how easily Butchie manipulates him. It’s the same as when he refused to negotiate. The reality was he was intellectually intimidated and out of his depth.
I never see people talking about this exchange. Carmine - "But we just talked about this..." Phil - "Well cooler heads prevailed" Phil just indirectly admitted that if Tony and Carmine walked into the house, they were going to be killed. The meeting was a set up. Carmine brokered the meeting thinking he was helping (lol) but when Butchie answered the door and basically told them "we changed our minds, you should leave", it was NY backing off the hit, not the meeting. Rewatch the scene with that context.
Reading the comments before watching the entire clip was the best thing ever. I didn't get the comments about Phil turning into a house so when 0:46 came around I nearly spit out my food LOL.
