The greatest public address announcer in the NBA. This is Dave Zinkoff announcing the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 5 of the 1984 NBA playoffs against the New Jersey Nets. Enjoy!
I'm a Knicks fan through and through but I loved the Sixers during these years, especially with Dave Zinkoff doing the lineups. You don't need fireworks and all of the hoopla like they do today. The only thing you need is a coloful PA announcer and a great crowd.
Air Assault I couldnt agree more! All the pyrotechnics and garbage nowadays in my opinion is nothing like this great display. "And out of the University of Massachusetts Julius Errrving"
I agree, and we also can’t forget another great. The legendary public address announcer at the Garden John FX Condon “Good afternoon everybody, welcome to the magic world of Madison Square Garden Center”
Willie Gordon I don’t like the modern pa announcers, and I don’t know who the pa announcer is at the TD Garden, but at the old Boston Garden, I loved listening to Johnny Most? I think that was his name. He was a true homer for the Celtics
Celtics fan here. This guy was the best PA announcer hands down. Julius Errrrrrrr-ving! I got to hear him a lot during the playoffs as a kid...and the Spectrum was a fantastic venue.
Matt Cord not only couldn't hold Dave Zinkoff's jock but also the box it came in. Dave didn't have to use echos or gimmicks. His PA announcements about someone car lights were on and no smoking were classics. And my favorite. I would like to thank you, you, you and especially you.
Wow what memories I tell you that this is the best intro ever. As a Lakers fan this would get me ready for the game with the Sixers especially when Doc was introduced Julius Erviiiiing!!!!
I remember my Dad taking me to a game vs. the Lakers in 1978 and when Doug Collins scored off an assist from Steve Mix, Zink would say, "Collins Mixer!" A basket by Lloyd (now World B.) Free was, "Lloyd FREEEEEEEEEE!!!" Other guys on other teams also loved to hear their names when they scored: "That COUNTS!" (Mel Counts). When Garfield Heard was with the Buffalo Braves, a score by him would get: "Heard....of Buffalo." RIP, Zink...you were truly one of a kind...
Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, it was always a treat to listen to road games from New York and Philadelphia. Madison Square Garden had the great John F.X.Condon on the PA, making just bare-bones announcements (including the score after every basket), and the Convention Center and Spectrum for Dave Zinkoff's flamboyance (ERRRRVINNNGGG). Polar opposites, but maybe the two best at what they did. All it is now in unemployed rock and roll DJ's- just not the same at all...
reminds me of ray clay of the bulls and the enthusiasm reminds me of modern hornets announcer eric collins. what an atmosphere this must’ve been. i wish i could’ve been alive back then to experience this.
As a Celtics fan Zinkoff made the great games even better. He'd say, Chaaaaaaaammmmm-ber-lain. Then a very quiet, Russell. Or Waaaaaaaaalllleee when Wally Jones scored, but a very flat Sam Jones for the Celtics great. My favorite was Bailey Howell. "That, pause, was a Howell, pause, Fow-ell." Awesome.
@Danny Kind I'll never forget him rolling the opening "t" when he would say "three for two" back in the day when they would shoot three FT's to make two.
Absolutely NO doubt in my mind, Zink was the NBA's GOAT on the public address..I LOVED him. The Lakers man at the mic since 1982-83, Lawrence Tanter, as great as he is..doesn't measure up to Zink. Juliuss ERRRRRVIINNNG!
Great memories... I actually had these starting lineups on tape somewhere... Where this picks up is about a minute after Zink tried to start announcing the starting lineups... But because the Spectrum was so loud, he couldn't... He started... And now..... and now... And then he finally started... Best thing about this was that my Nets won this game and dethroned the champs and advanced to the next round... Road team won every game of that 5 game series. Weird!
NBA was the best in 70s and eighties....incredible personalities, Coaches and legendary P A announcers like Philly and the knicks The Spectrum#Memories Bill Buckhead Ga
@@harrykargenian4887 I loved that organist... he played for the Flyers games in most of the '80s as well. Didn't know that was Paul Richardson, though.
Before the Jason Kidd era, this game was my one shining moment as a Nets fan! Actually had this on audio cassette many years ago.. I liked Zinkoff. Don't know what happened to the tape. What's cut out here (except for a little bit) was that the crowd was so amped that Zinkoff couldn't start the Sixers lineups... He tried to start by saying And Now... And now.. and now.. The Philadelphia 76ers.. Finally started after 3 or 4 attempts.
I would tape games and just get elated and chills if the broadcast would include zinckoffs intros usually on cable they were included on WOR when cable and VHS tape was starting out --- it was such a highlight collecting Zinks introductions !!! 🌟🌟🌟 Errrrrrvingg !! 🌟🌟🌟
From the University of Massachusetts "THE DOCTOR" #6 Julius Errrrrrrrrviiiiiiiig,no one ever announced "Dr J" name better than The Spectrum's "ZINKOFF"... SIXERS FOR LIFE!!!!!
Good Lord the mother of all L's. We all love Zink and he is the GOAT but you are out of your mind with this take. Bulls intros were about the only thing close to this.
I used to look forward to Sixers games on TV, just for the announcer. I always got chills when he introduced, "From the University of Massachusetts, number 6, Julius Errrrrvinng." When he finished the intro, I would Lose it. Loved my Sixers. Seeing this brought back memories, Especially seeing Andrew Toney. Back before he started college he used to shoot ball in the neighborhood park in Birmingham, Alabama. He used to attend the old Glenn High School, which no longer exists. He used to be unguardable because he could shoot from anywhere, kinda like how Steph Curry does now. Loved watching him play because he Hated the Celtics, which is when he had some of his best games. That was the reason that they used to call him, "The Boston Strangler." 😅
I was fortunate enough to experience Flyers and sixers playoff games in the Spectrum a place that held around 21,000 that sounded more like 61,000. Legendary....
Wish there were more clips of the great ole PA announcers. John Condon of Knicks, Andy Jick, Celtics and others without all the loud music fireworks, and screaming pa announcers like today.
True. I loved how Zink would announce Darryl Dawkins: "Double D, number 53!" I forget the name of the Laker's announcer, but my favorite call with him was "...and now here we go, the 4th and final period."
Zink was the best...still baffles me to this day that the defending champs lost to the NETS in this series....This was the strangest series of all time.....NOBODY won a damn home game.....
When I first heard him announce like that back in the day I was like, “Why’s he talking like that?” He’d scream and suddenly go to his inside voice. Talking fast and then drawing out his words. Then I realized that was his style. I hated when I was watching on TV and couldn’t hear his announcements. A unique part of league history. RIP, Zink.
@@bobmonzo3137 there was no energy from the players during Zink's introduction. The crowd was in a frenzy but the players were like, "ho-hum". They looked like it was beneath them to even have to go through the early rounds. The league should've just reserved a spot for them in the Finals. As you can tell, that loss still bothers me. LOL!
