A lot of these was him getting the ball at his only 30 with 30 seconds left. I don’t blame a QB for throwing up a prayer as a last resort. He’s a gunslinger. I much rather see him throw a pick when the team desperately needs to get down the field with no time left than see someone like Teddy Bridgewater throw a 5 yard pass on a 4th and 7 and lose but not throw a pick

I admire Rivers, but carrying a team as a qb doesn’t make them a hof. Other qbs who carried poor teams like Matt Stafford’s, Archie Manning, etc. will never sniff the hof because they’re missing key qualifications. Now rivers is unequivocally better than those two qbs, but that doesn’t help his hof chances. He was rarely ever the best or 2nd best qb in the league because he was always overshadowed by Brady, manning, Rodgers, brees, and favre. That’s why he doesn’t have accolades necessary for the hof like mvps, all pros, and opoys. Now, if he had a career like Big Ben and won multiple sbs, despite never being a top 2 qb, he would have a solid chance at getting inducted. But he didn’t even make a sb. U mentioned the rest of the team as the reason for why he failed to make a sb, but that doesn’t mean he should be absolved of blame. He submitted some poor performances that contributed to his losses. Overall, Rivers was a great qb, but he isn’t a HOFer.

You got your wish but the people replying below likely won't admit it. People idolize sports teams. The HC, owners & players can change & they feel loyal to the concept of 'The Team.' Ergo, the _Packers_ are great & if they lose, blame A Player. But as Barry has shown, the Packers are _not great_ in playoff games. Won't matter. The thing is, Rivers, was such a QB savant; that he was able to put up hall of fame career numbers with a slightly above average arm strength and the ugliest throwing motion in NFL history.

Matt Ryan has a higher shot at being a HOF than Rivers. He has a SB appearance, and the three highest honors a QB can get all in one season (1st team All Pro, MVP and OPOY). He will very likely finish with higher counting stats than Rivers as well.

It is not a long shot he is a shoe in. I did a 2,000 hour study of all of the Hall of Famers whose careers started after 1947. I first compared their stats to the average QB of their era and then those percentages to the other Hall of Famers or Famers to be. Rivers ranks a very solid 20th out of 31. His final score in my study was 448.7 and anyone above 375 should be a shoe in. He scores better than Dawson, Kelly, Elway, Layne, Stabler, Griese, Namath, Bradshaw, Starr and Aikman and right behind Warren Moon.

Yeah Eli was so inconsistent during the regular season.

Both were very prolific passers that fell short. Fouts had better offensive weapons while Rivers had better defenses. She also would choose Fouts over him. But it also can’t be understated how cursed that franchise is. John Hadl, Dan Fouts, Drew Brees and Philip Rivers and only 1 championship and 0 super bowl appearances amongst them but yet always injured Stan Humphries got them to a Super Bowl.

Rivers is the only QB in history to have double digit comeback wins when being down by 14+ late in the 4th quarter, Rivers has 14, no other QB eve has 10.

See, that's how I feel. It's the Hall of Fame, not the Hall of Good, although there's a decent amount of people in there for no reason other than they're old Steelers and Packers players during their glory years. Namath doesn't belong in there. I don't think every Lombardi player belongs in there, along with Noll. Good players, sure, but I'm not 100 percent on say, Stabler either.

@@bretarmstrong6303 Agreed. And I don't feel like stats should be the sole determining factor either. I think guys like Julian Edelman are the kind of players whose impact was beyond stats. Guys like Khalil Mack too. They are capable of dominance and have huge games but they also force teams to commit to double teaming them. Getting 100 receptions is great, but it can sometimes be just as important to create havoc and allow other players to get easy catches. And getting 15 sacks in a season is awesome but drawing double teams, batting down passes and making QB's uncomfortable are things that we can see, but don't usually consider when it comes to the HoF. But like you said, just being a member of a dominant team shouldn't give guys an easy path to the hall. People need to recalibrate what a HoF runningback is now because guys aren't getting 32 carries a game any more. Same goes for QB's and receivers. Throwing for 4,000 yards every year shouldn't matter if it's coupled with 20 interceptions and 9 losses. 65% of starting Qb's have thrown for 4000 yds per season since 2010. There are probably some WR stat-heros on shit teams but people also need to know how much of those stats were accumulated in garbage time. It's a lot easier to tack on an extra 60 or 70 receiving yds against a prevent defense, when your team is consistently down by 10+ points in the 4th quarter

I am not convinced Edelman is a Hall of Famer, but I get where you're coming from on the impact part. And yes, Adrian Peterson realistically, might be the last running back to have those kinds of stats (Henry too if he lasts awhile), so yes, we do need to re-assess the game from a stat point. I mean, I gotta be honest, if someone says Matt Ryan and Rivers belong in it, then why not Eli? And Eli, imo, was never very good. What's stopping Romo from being in at that point? It's a slippery slope if you ask me. A Pro Bowler and a Hall of Famer are 2 different makes I think. And nowadays, passing stats are kind of pedestrian compared to the old days. All of those QBs I mentioned probably have had way better stats than say Bart Starr. There needs to be some kind of balance here I think to who makes the Hall. Starr won championships with a dynasty, and I think he belongs. Griese, eh, he played for an undefeated Dolphins team that he didn't even play for because he was hurt. Championships don't mean everything, and fantasy numbers don't mean everything either, but they're both factors obviously. Marino won no championships, and Eli won 2. Almost everybody will say Marino is in fact deserving. Peyton won just as many as Eli, and we all know him to be the better QB. These are all things to consider when you think about it. Please reply back, I legit want to know how much of that you agree or disagree with, you seem like a smart dude in all honesty. It's great to talk objectively about this sport sometimes instead of, "Ah fuck you, you're a Seahawks fan!"

I'll respect what all these guys achieved as football players but if the committee's keep letting guys in because they put up stats, the Hall of Fame is gonna be more crowded than a subway in China. If Eli gets the nod for winning 2 SB's.... so be it, but I don't think he had the makings of a varsity athlete. Either way, I think objective, statistical metrics should get a reasonable amount of consideration but there also needs to be a narrative that explains why a player deserves to get in. I'm from Boston originally and I'd like to get behind a guy like Matt Ryan (Boston College) but he is in that same category of Rivers and Romo. And it's not just the SB loss. It was his Eli Manning-like performances when things weren't going great. He had some great, outlier seasons but he posted quite a few dud seasons too. All that said, I would probably vote yes on Julio Jones because he is the main reason that Matt Ryan even gets consideration. And besides that, he impacts the way defenses scheme against the Falcons and he requires so much attention that it frees up the rest of the offense. Derrick Henry is probably earning his way in but I think RB's are gonna have to be analyzed more within the model of a Christian McCaffrey or Dion Lewis.... capable backs who are equal parts, rushing and receiving threat. But if people keep clinging to stat arguments then Jameis Winston and Frank Gore will end up being first ballot Hall of Famers.

Watching the Colts win right now with Wentz and that stud of an r.b. has got to make Rivers shake his head. Perfect timing with the afc South in the sewer. I'm so gonna laugh my butt off if the Colts make the super bowl due to wide open a.f.c.

Just wanted to point out, that Rivers only once ever had an "above average" pass blocking O-Line, and that was with the Colts. The best protection he had in front of him as a Charger was in 2013 when it was 21st, still below average as 16 is average. The rest of the time as a Charger the O-Line rankings of their starters in pass protection was never better than 26th, and mostly was top 3 worst. And that was their starters, not even counting the injuries they had to deal with. 1 example was 2019 when they didn't have a single starter left on the entire O-Line by the end of week 6 and by the end of the season they had gone through 13 different O-Linemen. BTW, that year they starters were ranked 31st in the league yet those starters basically didn't even get to play. That's the kind of so called "protection" Rivers had as a Charger. Not once was it even average let alone above average. 2018 even though they had 9 different O-Linemen and it was still ranked 31st in the league in pass blocking Rivers put up MVP numbers and was only out shined by the Mahamones 50+ TD season. Rivers was 2nd in line for MVP behind that shitty O-Line. Main difference from 2018 to 2019 (the Center Mike Pouncy stayed healthy all 2018).

Eli and rivers seem so similar. Tough, dominant in the 4q, both on pretty weak franchises. Eli just had a team build on defense and rivers had a team built on offense resulting in higher stats but less results. The results may have been pretty similar if they switched places
