@@douglasmayhall8279 Pretty jugdmental. After all isn't he pretty succesful ? In my opinion that's for the best he ain't a star and keeps doing his stuff raw, no bad influence. Especially when you consider how easy is it to acces this great music today compared to the past. There's place for every genre now, what a time to be a music enjoyer. There's no time to shit on everyone's tastes, too much to listen :D
depending on how you define "star". Large scale commercial success has to do with the genre you play, look at john mayer. If you decide to play 60s/70s music, nothing wrong with it but you are definitely limiting your potential fan base.
THIS GUY IS INSANE!! I don't give a shit if he's an 'SRV duplicate' - who fucking cares the man is on fire and is playing blues rock better than anyone in this day and age. The world needs to know more about Philip Sayce. Mark my words, this is only the beginning.
SRV was an influence, but this cat pays more homage and nods to Jeff Healey who was one of his bigger idols. He even toured with Jeff for a while. He's far from an SRV duplicate. Like SRV before him, Phillip does what those before him did, he just does it HIS way, and like Stevie its amazing. Nobody will ever duplicate Stevie. There was only one. There will never be another.
@@66HM5 Jeff was such an amazing player. Ive met him a few times around Toronto. Theres a spot just outside the city where he had a blues bar. He used to sit on the back of a golf cart, playing his trumpet while being driven around, just talking to people. I still watch that video of himself playing with SRV nearly everyday.
Hahahaha! When I first saw that guy, I thought, "Who's the old guy right up front getting blasted?" Then I realized, I'm an old guy who would probably be up front too. Heh heh. You nailed it with the Larry David look alike though!
I was thinking the opposite. This song has an r&b bouncy groove in the original.. this drummer has no funk groove whatsoever. Maybe it's the lack of a bass player. That keyboard player should be able to fake a bass line... Not feelin' this at all.. The guitar player is ok, I guess.
Its almost annoying how many players are just clones of SRV or Hendrix. This guy is certainly an exception - he may be influenced by them but holy shit does he have his own sound, his own unique licks and style. This guy is just a fucking beast of a player
That's like saying it's annoying that basketball players are influenced by Michael Jordan. Who else do you expect the influence to come from if you want to play blues? You are pretty limited with the pentatonic scale so the only place to go is to a place that's already been gone to many times by the best players. It's objectively impossible to completely do your own thing after something has been around for so long. It's like electric cars, every new version will have some influence from Tesla. What's really annoying is that everyone on the internet has to judge everything like an Olympic sport to validate their own existence and try and be relevant, instead of just consuming Entertainment. Everyone has to judge it now so they can make it about their self proclaimed brilliant insight instead of letting it be about the entertainer. Everyone thinks they are an infallible authority.
Hey @BJ Dee . Sayce toured with Jeff Healey as second, and sometimes first guitar. Saw them in a small club. Jeff encouraged Phillip to let 'er rip. btw videos online.
Imagine you walk into the bar to play some pool at first your pissed the table is moved for the band.......then omg they start playing.....who is this guy I feel so lucky right now hours at end listing to RU-vid I tell yeah the recommendation tonight this is absolutely the best one I have ever been given. Wow just wow. This video too...who ever shot it, it was captured perfectly.
Joe is a complete artist and offers something completely different to SRV imitators like this guy. He writes amazing songs and - crucially - he always knows when to rein it in. He knows the importance of nuance. You can always hear the space between the notes. Strange observation to make, I know, but it's important. He captures mood better than almost any other guitarist I can think of. The solo on The Last Matador of Bayonne is thing of utter beauty. It's an understated masterpiece. JB is a monster guitarist and probably the best blues rock guitarist out there, whereas Sayce feels more like an exceptionally gifted SRV tribute act.
Outstanding! The fact that Phil didn't start playing until age 15 and was in Jeff Healey's band only 5 yrs later shows his natural talent. When he steps on the gas he can shred it up and he's not scared to take chances and play outsude the box. I'm def a fan.
@@cattaino That’s funny. I was going crazy and playing it for my girlfriend and she said “Nanna Nanny Boo Boo” but my friend figured it out it’s Ring Around the Rosie!!! kids say nanna nanny boo boo in the melody of ring around the Rosie I think.
when I play small venues like this one and I feel so underrated I just say to myself "Hey Philip Sayce plays small venues too and he is guitar master" and then I feel better
I believe his vibrato is unique because he tunes a whole step down. The string tension must be really low, and is what allows him to achieve those famous Philip Sayce bends

Cats like Sayce and Gales go wayyy beyond emulation of their influences. SRV and Jimi are somewhere grinnin ear to ear. That’s all that matters when the show is over,
I used to watch Walter Trout in a bar like this in Huntington Beach CA. Hopefully Philip will get the nod someday soon. I just discovered him, and my mind is blown. What a talent!! 💚🎸
I indulge in stevie and jimi daily and tbh I never even noticed he was like either after reading a few of these comments. I have to say though that this guy is just a rabid fucken beast, even his vocals are so good!
His tone absolutely smokes, obviously a hoss of a player but it’s always his tone that I like the most. That Fender head is just cranking with a plexiglass shield in front and it still sounds like it could cave in the venue. Massive sound. Also dig the bits of humor he throws in there (Hall of the Mountain King 👌)
He's one of the best around. I see in him something SRV had and he was the best at it: an ability to play as if you're not for even one second thinking about what you're doing. Never seen SRV taking that brief look at the neck between one lick and the next to check where he is and where he can go from there. Philip is just the same.
Massively influenced by SRV and its awesome. He's got really heavy gage strings and the action is pretty high, just like Stevie Ray. This dude is so damn good.
if this crowd paid less than $150 a pop they should be Ashamed ! Damn! I miss live music! Covid has left me broke as hell, but I would gladly give my last $150 and a beer to see @philipsayce live!! Beautiful!
That guitar is pregnant for sure. His style suits the condition of that guitar . It's got serious character and the tone is incredible. It's videos like this that make me in awe of how much unheard of talent is out there and yet it's these moron auto tune robots that are signed .
