Philips Hue Loses To an £8 Smart Home Product From Tesco

The Supermarkets are coming for Philips Hue, and Tesco's new Calex product just trounced them! This is a review of Calex versus Philips Hue. There are advantages and disadvantages to both products, but when you look at the difference in price it's an obvious choice.
As stated in the video, Philips is brighter for colour settings, and there are advantages to Zigbee products over Wifi, so if you are interested in a Philips Hue alternative that works with Philip's Hue's hub, and that beats it for both whites and colours then check out the following Zigbee enabled products:

Happy Saturday everyone!! These videos weren;t relerased in order, so the Lidl video is already out!: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cVtGpdykGUM.html. As for today's video, Hue has brighter colours than these bulbs, and there ARE advantages to Zigbee over Wifi, BUT at a preposterous difference in cost. If you want cheap and easy then hit Tesco, if you want something that beats Hue for colours AND brightness then there are cheaper options listed below that will work directly with your Philips Hue bridge. Full disclosure; 3rd party bulbs don't work with Hue sync, because... ya know... corporate greed... As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. By buying through any of the links below I will earn commission at no extra cost to you :) Zigbee GU10's UK: amzn.to/2GYvbLM US: amzn.to/3kwsgru Zigbee Colour Zigbee E27's UK: amzn.to/3pFtTWv US: amzn.to/3aZWge3 Tunable White Zigbee E27's: UK: amzn.to/3nvwIsA US: amzn.to/2WsieOm Zigbee Filament bulbs: UK: amzn.to/3apfMAc US: Currently unavailable

I just wanted to let you know that on the 10th December Tuya went down. You said you didn't know of a time it had ever gone down but now you do :) it was a dark day for me, actually it wasn't, it was a ridiculously bright day as I couldn't turn my lights off until I remembered what the hell I had called my smart light switches as I never use them by voice and I wasn't getting up off my arse, that's the point of smart tech. Keep the videos coming, you are one of my go to guys for honest smart tech reviews, my philips hue stuff may be expensive but the hue sync box teamed with the gradient light strip and a few play bars are AMAZING. That is the only reason I own hue stuff, it has it's very expensive uses

Hi Paul, I like your videos. And the information is very welcome to me. It provides insight about the products with zigbee etc. I use it in combination with Home Assistant. But I still have a question, can you also provide information about the life span of the bulbs. My personal experience with cheaper products is that they fail much more quickly. And then cheap is still expensive. Just get on with your channel, I'll watch every time. Thanks!!!

Great video! i personally bought 3 350 lumen hue gu 10's and 4 e27's from hue. The biggest reason for me was that i have a ambilight tv from philips, and all of my bulbs sync perfectly without an delay from it, i also tried lidl zigbee bulbs to sync but that slowed down all the bulbs as soon as i added the lidl bulb to the sync group. For me the syncing with the tv is another great feature as well!

Loving the videos and the information is right on the money for what I'm looking for, especially someone who works in tech and has kept the Smart home setup at an arms length due to the prohibitive initial setup and costs, though seeing Calex that is when I dived into it. I picked up a few bulbs and was VERY intrigued by how well they seemed to work and have since gone and setup my home with them. I've used the RGB bulbs for the GU10 and Bayonet bulbs, as I can now setup routines to adjust my lighting during the morning, day and night. Really great product for what its worth. (especially if you're someone who's got a solid wifi mesh spread across their home.) I prefer the wifi attachment myself as I don't have to bother with the hubs. Though I was wondering, did you get your hands on the Calex indoor security camera as I was thinking about using that to trigger some Alexa routines as opposed to motion sensors.

Are the Tesco bulbs limited to 2.4ghz network? I recently bought one from Poundland that was ok with my sky hub, running at both 2.4 and 5ghz. But when I switched to Virgin broadband and the hub runs at 5ghz the light would not pair. I still need to check if what I read for other products ie change hub settings to 2.4, pair bulb and then change hub back to 5ghz is true.

What about these Tesco bulbs to LIFX. I am currently playing around with these and my main like is that if a light is off and is scheduled to get brighter or dim depending on the time of the day, they don’t come on unlike hue does. If you have the Tesco bulb off and say “hey assistant Dim light to 30%” do they come on or do they change the dim setting and stay off so when you next turn them on they turn on at 30%

After watching another great video from paul I went out and bought three of these today (1 x E27 Bulb & 2 x E14 Bulbs) and, whilst a bit of a pain to set-up, I'm really impressed. I had a bit of trouble connecting to Home Assistant though. Unfortunately, you can't flash the ones I got with Tasmota due to incompatibility but you can use Home Assistants built-in Tuya Integration, though I found I had to set the lights up in the Jinvoo Smart app instead to be able to log in via Home Assistant. Completely agree that the colours are very dim but the whites are great (and Mrs Jim won't let me play with the colours anyway).

Very good video Paul. Just one or two things I do differently and struggle with. 1. I have a set of downlights supported by Tuya and have them integrated perfectly with HA, without having to flush the firmware. I simply used the Tuya integration and I’m happy. 2. They seem to have an integration with Smartthings, but for the life of me, I can’t seem to add them on the app. The API is setup, but I can’t see or find these devices, 4 downlights and a smart plug.

If the supermarkets can get the coloured part of their smart bulbs to work well (i.e. much brighter) at these prices, then this will be a massive step forward for home automation. I decked my whole house in Hue a year ago. Smart switches, sensors, bulbs etc etc also being a pixel owner I have a fast smart home feature linked to my phone by holding the power button which I love using. I like that you said about bulbs that work with the hue hub but I wanna change a few of the lights as the brightness off some bulbs is poor in 2 areas of my house. If you had to recommend a brand that works in Google home/ Hue Hub with great brightness what would it be? You said Ajax but are they the better ones? We are also after a good Vintage style bulb that works with these as well.

I tried to get 3 of these for the kids and games room but sold out! Will have to wait until Monday for new stock. Anyway, Happy New Year Paul and wish you all the continued success for the future. As always. Sending you a virtual beer 🍻

thanks for the video! Brighter is fine and all; but how about the lowest brightness? Can these bulbs go lower in brightness than the hue bulbs? For example: i use a hue bulb on my kids bedroom as a nightlight because i can dim the light very low. I want more bulbs that can go very low but...the price of hue is crazy,.

Paul can you help me out! I made the grave grave mistake of buying the hue sync box before finding your videos... and always check back on your videos hoping you will release a solution. But do you know any bulbs that will sync with hue through the sync box and change with the TV? I have been out and tried load but with no luck. Zigbee finds them but no they do not sync to my TV and I appear to be stuck with hue 😭

Hey Paul, I noticed you linked to the Innr bulbs in your description. What's your opinion on them?

I got some of the Lidl light strips which synced with my Hue hub straight away. Working great!

I was just looking for this kinda thing Paul! Thanks! By the way... I’ve just been playing with home assistant and it’s so incredibly hard! I’ve got it set up on a virtual machine and I’ve managed to link it to Amazon Alexa, but I did need to make my own skill who has the time for this crap!? 😂
@paulhibbert
@paulhibbert 3 года назад
You can link it with their official skill, but it is subscription based which is super off putting. I get it that they need to pay their running costs, but it's enough to make me look at other solutions.

You only need to make your own skill if you’re using Haaska instead of paying for the Nabu Casa cloud. Pretty much everything else already has inbuilt integrations or has them as add-ons through the Supervisor or via HACS and there’s plenty more kicking around on GitHub. If you’re sticking to Zigbee, you can use ZHA and that will cover almost every device you can get. Even those smart looking Aqara switches you can get on eBay. Yes, it does take a little time getting things set up, but once you’ve done it, you can get it to do some really clever stuff.

Hi Paul. Love your videos. As an Amazon Associate, you only have links to the UK & US sites . You should consider the DE site as well. Reason is that we in the EU don't want to pay custom taxes and shit (customs handling fee). Thats why we can only use the DE site. Amazon also have a facility in Sweden, but the only send to Sweden & Norway... not Denmark, where I am living :-( So consider the DE links.... and remember in 2021, we want more videos with Neesha :-) Happy new year!

Happy new year dude! There's a good reason that I only do UK and US these days but I can't go into it. Let's just say that when I started doing DE and FR links things ended VERY badly for me indeed.

I want to! I'm thinking the helmet or the rocket pack from the rocketeer would be a good one to do! I shall remember this when I next get some down time!

I bought a stack of GU10's from Lidl and they work great with Alexa, as do the individual power sockets so thanks for the heads up on those. However the Zigbee extension lead from Lidl is giving me a massive headache. I can only get Alexa to detect one of the 3 sockets - it ignores the USB ports too. Any ideas?

oh god that pairing procedure with the IKEA hub was a pain in the ass! Also their hub just decided to not connect anymore to my network so I bought a cc2531 stick instead and re-paired everything. It was sooooo much easier! Literally reset the device and wait a few seconds. NO-THI-NG more thab that! Except the curtains where I had to get the extender pretty close to the device. I am now controlling all zigbee stuff with home assistant and node red, works as a charm! Also: LIDL stuff paired just as easily! I bought their christmas lights and it just works with the cc2531. I know you don't like HA as much, but you should try to install the cc2531 and give node red a go, I also do a lot of stuff on sunrise and sunset, as well as stuff at certain hours. I think I could write a blogpost about it since I haven't a clue about video editing hahah

A week or so ago, I replaced a couple of smart bulbs, and noticed that they were warm even when off. I then checked some others and found that some were warm, some not. If they are warm when off, that means they are burning a good amount of power just standing by - so those got replaced too. But checking for warmth is probably a terrible way to judge how much power is being used. So ... what this leads to is the question "how much power do these things use in different conditions". You may have covered this at some point, and I missed it, but it might be something worth checking (if you can figure out a good way to do so) in future reviews! Maybe check how much power used when off, at half-brightness, and full brightness.
