Exceptionally well done video series. Just really superb - thank you! I was about to throw out our third Diamondcare Sonic toothbrush. Never again. Even if I can’t repair it, I’ll keep it for spare parts for the next one.

Thanks a lot for your movies! Your instructions allowed me to fix my toothbrush which I was sure was already trash. I dropped it on the head and the pin became very loose - the vibrations didn't transfer to it. I was sure it broke mechanically. After opening it I saw the metal bit was intact and just the screw holding it got loose. I tightened it up and saved the price of a new tooth brush I almost bought :D.

Great work you doin. Im just tryin to repair two HX9340 mainboards. One was smokin at the transistor near the power jumper. You got any circuit or idea what parts they used? Should be easy fix to swap it. The other mainboard is workin a bit strange. The motor is just doin a noise but no vibration. I checked the connections on the pcb and they are ok. Could be the motor also got broken cause of water and corossion? Finally I orderderd a new mainboard, hope i can get one fixed. I need to say the old versions of the sonicare are build like a tank. They are really well protected from water and even the battery is runing over 10 years now.

The lower part of motherboard is usually charging.. could be that something else is damaged as well.. as for the humming and no vibrations there are few things I saw one video where it suggests that eeprom got errased and needs to be reflashed. Couldn't confirm this. Other that I saw was one of the resistors can't remember the placing was off the needed value. You would need two boards to compare with a good one.. yes I love old diamondclean as well it's easy to repair even after water damage and all the traces can be followed easily.. sadly progress goes to the multilayer boards with everything crammed in to chips, that is much more difficult to repair...

When repairing one, would you recommend spraying polyurethane clearcoat (conformal coating) if we properly tape all contacts and the switch? To prevent more water damage. Maybe even for a new toothbrush!?

Yes, I always cover it in coating after repair.

Which bits would I need to tape/protect prior to coating? What kind of maskant would I need?

Usually I cover only the places I repaired. I'm principle you can leave it uncovered and spray everything will not hurt. Only buttons and solder points would be logical to leave without coating :)

I suggest once you open it, to reseal everything with glue, epoxy, w/e. Even after replacing seals.. Once I cracked it open to replace battery it worked for a week and stopped. Opening it up I found water damage. Traces and fuse are good, led does not come on at all. The battery charges to 1.6V and then drops while on charger. If I had sealed it I'd still have a working toothbrush but now I have parts I don't know what to do with
@letsfixitgarage
@letsfixitgarage 2 года назад
It is helpful to add some protection layers but if water gets in it will corode anyways as it is a closed enclosure with no way for water to evaporate.. so something else would give.. check my other comment I would suggest to look for a short on the PCB

@@letsfixitgarage thank you.. the board is definitely bad. I took the new battery out and made a 5V charger splicing an old USB cable and jumped it to 3.7V. So far it's stable at 3.4V but I'll have to get a new brush (not a $200 one again)

Note: the cup charger worked before disassembly.. im stumped

Difficult to say.. but you do need to charge it with glas or plastic part on the charger and bottom cap in place as distance is very important for these chargers..

Hi, thank you very much for your videos. My toothbrush is fully charged, but when I press the button it doesn't vibrate at all. The lights all switch on and off twice and that's it every time I press the button. What would you advice me to do? Thanks!
@f1l4nn1m
@f1l4nn1m 3 года назад
I opened it and it was full of moisture. The top rubber was definitely and badly damaged. The inside smelled a bit like toothpaste. I soaked it with paper and then with an hair dresser. Right now it works. Sometimes the button doesn't work and sometimes when I reach the third press (third program) it shuts down. For now I don't really care but I plan to buy a new one soon anyway. Thanks a lot!
@letsfixitgarage
@letsfixitgarage 3 года назад
not sure what hair dresser is, but hope you dried it with a fan or high percentage alcohol before that.. as if moisture is trapped inside it could start acting up again.. and what was your solution for rubber seal? As that part needs to be exchanged as well.. It could be as well that the button has some moisture inside and needs to be replaced or opened and cleaned as it was shown in this video.. so either way some repair is needed if you want to use it in future, but if you want to get a newer model then of course it's not worth the additional effort..

Hello, i have the same problem with a broken rubber seal. It is still working but I am afraid that the water will get inside. Is it possible to repair/replace the rubber seal? Is it available to buy anywhere as a spare part it? Thanks
@letsfixitgarage
@letsfixitgarage 3 года назад
Yes it's exchangeable. You will need to take it apart and when you do take a good look if the pcb didn't started corroding and if you have some isopropyl alcohol it wouldn't harm to clean the board, button and then dry it out. If you will start to feel that time after time you need to press it hard to turn on, it means that water got inside the button and it got contaminated.. I have one video with button cleaning although it's quite delicate work... And as for the seal check out eBay and AliExpress.. that's my source, as there are no official spare parts for these toothbrushes..

I thought I was in the clear, and it worked for while but now the button does not turn the toothbrush on anymore. I disassembled it and still can't turn it on pressing the button on the pcb. I don't see any water damage anywhere. Any ideas? I doubt it is really the button failed but I haven't verified this.....

Check my water damage repair videos. It has test points that you can check with multimeter and see if main traces are ok. Main question ofcourse is did you found some water traces on the drive mechanismus and is the seal ok? usually main water damage is on the back side of the motherboard. Other things to check is battery voltage and fuse. But these things are explained as well in the water damage series videos. If you will have some questions after watching these videos let me know.

Good. If battery is ok then check in continuity mode fuse, and MOSFET controll traces I showed them in water repair videos. @@letsfixitgarage Thanks for the quick reply! Model: HX9370 I think it is the same one as you used in this video (same color anyway and internals anyway) No indications. Power button doesnt do anything. Before I repaired the position of the magnet (thanks to your video :) ) sometimes all LEDs flashed at very low intensity so I think their might have been a shortcut or other issue. Maybe that was also the result of the magnet being stuck against the coils. Now it doesnt do anything. When I charge it, the LEDs do what do normally did: - green LED slowly flashing - when removed from charger all LEDS on for ~10s Do you know if the mode-LED also lights up when there is something wrong with the coils (or f.e. if the magnet is too far away?) Maybe the system needs it to operate? Can you maybe test it by disconnecting the coils and see what happens if then the power button is pressed? At the moment one of the red wires towards the coils is broken as I moved it too much... so first have to fix that. Not sure if it was already a bad connection and that therefore the LEDs dont light up... Thanks already! (if you prefer to do this via email then please share your mailadres)
@letsfixitgarage
@letsfixitgarage Год назад
No there is no feedback from the coils. It works it's cycle even when no coils are connected. But let's start from begining your brush had water damage. My best gues is that the power button inside has corrosion. Check my water damage repair videos in one of them I open the button. So you need to do the same or replace the button completely. You can check this by shorting two button legs with pliers or other metal device it should turn on. If no it means the button trace on the back side is damaged. You will need to remove the PCB completely and restore the trace by wiring a jumpwire on top from button test point to one of the test points that I show in water damage repair videos regarding trace restoration. But as said to evaluate the real damage you will need to remove the PCB completely. If you need my email its in about Channel section. Good luck!

They are great brushes but The fact that Philips will not sell parts or acknowledge the weak areas that will cause breakdown is not attractive at all.

Hi in my experience battery is very unlikely to get bad.. usually it's a defect on motherboard.. water based or component failure. These are usually complex failures so one video will not help, check all of my videos for water damage repair and summary videos of all the defects in one.. or you can contact me :) my email is in Chanel description. For spare parts I check AliExpress or eBay, these are my main sources.. regarding Philips I'm growing to understand their position.. not saying that it's right but these repairs are somehow complex and difficult for large manufacturer, but for sure they could offer spares for small repair shops or DIY enthusiast's :)

@@letsfixitgarage Good point. I have two brushes that don’t work. In one the battery lifts out at one end and I think there should be a lead which may be broken. As the leads are soldered the battery shouldn’t lift.
@letsfixitgarage
@letsfixitgarage 2 года назад
Then yes lead from battery has broken off. It is usually spot welded to the battery. So if it corroded away I would definitely suggest taking the board off and inspecting the back side for water damage. Or it could be that you will need to take it apart one more time.. Spot welding or soldering of the lead to the battery is possible as well but it requires precision..

Mine had a blown fuse and 2 damaged VIAs. Certainly repairable but not worth the time if a spare PCB costs 25€.
@letsfixitgarage
@letsfixitgarage 7 месяцев назад
yes sometimes the damage is just to big for repair.. especially with new diamondcleans and newer models where they have multilayer PCBs they are not as easy to repair as classical diamondclean..

Let's Fix It Garage - How can I message you and send you a picture of my toothbrush? I have the internals exposed on a Phillips Sonicare Series 2 toothbrush and it looks like the motors has rusted and corroded. Just want your opinion on what you see.

If you have rust it will be water damaged. You can check my other videos on water damage and it's repair. Additionally my email is in channels about section.

Most of the video is of his work bench. Who would go to this much trouble for a toothbrush?
@letsfixitgarage
@letsfixitgarage Год назад
that's always the case in the learning curve.. boring and long.. this video was my first attempt in water damage repair and sadly is not the best example, but you can always check other videos where you can find a summary of majority of defects and solutions to it in one video ;) that kind of video can come only after the boring part :) As for the trouble I have already repaired more than 300 toothbrushes for different people. And when I read successful repair comments I really start to think that these video do make an impact...
