Philodendron Brasil Care. Here are some basic care guidelines that have worked well for me. I hope you find this video useful and to check back for more plant care videos!
I'm glad you enjoy my style of video. I also like channels that just tell me what I need to know....I don't need to watch others sip coffee and stuff like that haha
This stunning baby has been on my wishlist for the longest time & I finally found a nice, healthy, huge one at my local Walmart! Only $15! I'm so elated! I'm glad I found this video tho bc I would've given it low-med light like my other philo....now I know it needs to be in my west window. Thanks so much for the info! New subscriber now ^_^ Cannot wait to watch this continue to grow.... I've even already taken a cutting to start a 2nd! Plant Insurance!! ☘😉🌱
Be careful with direct light though....too much light can damage the leaves. Medium to bright indirect light is perfect for this stunning plant. I'm glad you were able to get one and thanks for subscribing! WELCOME
@@EverythingPlants Mine became green. I'm kinda sad and nervous because the variegation was gone but it grows well maybe it just lacks fertilizer and sunlight. Any tips?
@@EverythingPlants Honestly, I've just started again to collect! Shied away from plants for awhile since I was a heavy waterer & killed most of my beautiful plants. In the last while I've been reading & learning a lot, so I now feel confident to collect agin!! Love your videos!!
Great video. Just received one in the mail today. Excited to watch this baby grow. Is this plant finicky with type of water given? I have been using distilled.
What I great purchase! This is not a fussy plant at all and honestly I used tap water for mine. Distilled water should do just fine! Good luck and enjoy your beautiful new plant!
This is really beautiful. I can only imagine what it looks like today. 😍 I just received my very first Brazilian Philodendron, and I want to make sure I'm taking extra special care of it. Would you recommend I wait until spring to repot it into its permanent home? It's currently still in the 4-inch pot from the store. I would rather do this during a time when it can survive a "noob" trying her best to repot a plant. I've heard this is Spring.
Hello and welcome! The plant is this video is no longer......lost it to thrips. It has since been replaced with a new Brasil. I will be making a new houseplant home tour very soon. It is often recommended that you wait to repot and prune plants until the growing seasons, but I have done so at all times of the year. I would wait awhile to let your plant adjust to your homes conditions. What is your reason for repotting it?
@@EverythingPlants @Everything Plants Thank you so much. I greatly appreciate the response. I feel like I should wait until Spring. My reason is, I suppose, to prevent stunting its growth. I feel like the four inch pot is too small, and a larger pot would give in more room to grow fuller. The houseplants home tour sounds very cool. Can't wait to see it. ☺️
PLEASE tell me. Is a sign of thrips a roundish brown spot that looks a little thinner than the leaf, surrounded by yellow. What about the same thing but narrow and long on the edge of the leaf. Please describe thrips signs.
I have found the newest leaves are smaller. I'm not sure what type of lighting conditions you have yours in, but if it is lower light then maybe try a spot with brighter light.
I had an all green Philo for several years. Just languished, I’d rarely water it. It was sad. Then I moved it into the warmest room in the house (we have a drafty, cold, Minnesota house) on a shelf in a dark corner. Within a week I noticed a stringy little vine with Brasil looking leaves on it! That was 1.5 years ago. Now there are two. They’re still smaller and spindlier than the other stems and leaves but they’re adorable. I’m fascinated by the genetics of it. Anyone know if it’s common to this species to just switch color or add it?
I've never seen a brasil revert, but with any variegated plant they typically need bright light. If it isn't getting enough light then it has a chance of losing its varigation.
Is there a possibility that with too high lighting the leaves turn like lemon lime? I have a couple of leaves without variation totally bright green and I don't know if to cut them or what
Plants always get more variegation with higher light. Now with that said I can't say this is the reason for all bright green. You can try and cut those leaves off and see what happens. I would cut back to the next "normal" leaf node.
Hi, I just bought one last week but noticed it with a lot of lime colour new leaves and some dark green leaves on the back. May I know if the plant is going to grow some leaves with different colours in the future?
I'm not too sure to be honest. One of mine is doing the same so I will keep an eye on it and maybe prune it back if it doesn't regain the classic Brazil look.
Hello. For most of my houseplants I use miracle grow 20-20-20 granular and water soluble fertilizer. When I remember to fertilize, I'll probably do it once a month in the growing seasons.
I adore my brasil! Though I noticed today when I watered her, there’s a few leaves with little lines through them, a little bit brown around the edges where these holes and lines are. It’s growing absolutely fine, leaves don’t seem dry or curling...any ideas? Thank you!!
@@EverythingPlants I sure will! I also appreciate how you engage with the comments. A few plant youtubers never answer questions, or even give a thumbs up. I have dropped a couple b/c of that issue. So thank you
@@rdred8693 I value every viewer and I try my hardest to take time to respond (sometimes I can't keep up though) when people take time to message me. Thanks for the support!
Problem with water propagation is that if you keep it in water for a bit longer then it does not survive in sand so as soon as I see about an inch growth in roots, I plant in sand
I will keep the soil fairly wet for about 2 weeks and slowly decrease the amount of water over time. I've had pretty good success with this method so far. Thanks for your technique.
I have mine facing a west window and the with the blinds pulled so it doesn’t get direct sunlight. I have a leaf that looks a bit burned and turning yellow and wilting. Some of the other leaves looked to be scored as well. What should I do? I only have two windows in my apartment.
How to return the variegations on my brasil?? It’s on direct sunlight at 7-8 am, do you prefer that I should place it just on a shaded area?? And not on a direct sunlight?
If it has turned all green then I don't think there isn't a way to get it back. I would place it in brighter light or even use a grow bulb for extra light!
I bought one a while ago and it came in quite a big nursery pot for the amount of leaves it has. It barely grows, the soil is very loose and stays wet for a long time. Should I perhaps put it into a smaller nursery pot? Would that help you think? It has barely grown in half a year and it gets eastern facing light.
That is something that I would do for sure....put it in an appropriate sized pot and better soil. Now is the perfect time as well with spring finally here. Keep me posted and if you ever have any other questions, you can message or send plant pics to my Instagram as well.
@@EverythingPlants wasn't expecting a reply on this old video!! Thank you so much. I will do it as soon as I got some good soil, hopefully it will feel and grow better, thanks!
Diagnosing a plant issue is pretty difficult and even harder without a picture. Yellow leaves can be anything from over to water watering, fertilizer issues or even bug/pests. Yellow with brown spots might be a pest issue. Thrips are terrible where I am this year.
Why do my leaves look transparent then fall off? even new growth? I try not to water too much but it is in a plastic pot... thinking I need to move it to terra cotta and get tropical soil. I use regular potting soil. Thank you.
Have you encountered the leaves being thin? Or like, it just doesn’t look so juicy and shiny? Cause mine are becoming that and I don’t know why :( I’ve only given it worm compost as fertiliser
I've never noticed this before in my philodendrons. I find them to be thin normally compared to other similar plants like pothos. Are they leaves still looking healthy and colourful?
@@EverythingPlants that is true! I have golden pothos and the heart shaped philodendrons as well. These brasil philo have thinner leaves than them. The leaves are generally healthy and colourful, or at least the newer ones are. It’s the older and bigger ones that seem pretty thin and dull. I just got them a couple of weeks ago, so should I probably give it more time to have new leaves and see how it goes?
Hello. Depends on the size of the plant when you buy it. Mine is in a 4 inch pot right now. You can go one pot size bigger for a plant this size, but I wouldn't recommend anything larger than that.
A co worker gave me a baby that had some serious root rot. I just had miracle grow orbees (I did rinse/hydrogen peroxide rinse). My plant still seems stringy.
@@EverythingPlants the plant still seems super long and leggy. I have change the placement in case it needed more sun but started to crisp up so I leaned off. I have fertilize on a loose monthly basis.
Hey. I just got a few cuttings of the Brazil FRM a friend, pipes em in some water and out in my window, however it's been about 2 weeks and I see no growth on any !!!!! Is this normal ?? Also, I put a tiny drop of fertilizer in one cup just to see which one would grow roots fastwr and the other is just water, but still, both have nothing. Plz help !!! This is my top wishlist plant
Hi! My plant has new leaves and one of them turned brown and fell off. Is that common? It’s a new plant and I repotted it right away because I bought it online with no pot, just soil and not much. Is it normal for new plants to grow leaves that turn brown and fall off before even sprouting out?
Hello. Some of my plants have done this as well when I first bring them home. I'm assuming it is the change in environment or a watering issue that causes this new leaf drop. I could be completely wrong, but keep an eye on it and give it a chance to adjust. It may take some time before you see new growth so don't panic.
@@EverythingPlants it’s at the window, west facing. I will try and put it where there’s more light. Let’s see if that works. Thanks for the suggestion!
Why is my philodendron turning reddish brown, not green Idk the stem are turning red and leaves are kinda brown like?? Did I over water it or something ;(
Does it look like it is dying? These plants can revert back to their "original" plant variety, losing the variegation. The might be happening to yours and that is usually due to not enough sunlight to support the variegation.
@@dimasf.c4373 mine is the same...but she's not dying..is beautiful....growing big...just a few reddish-brown colors leaves for a moment I thought I had a unicorn plant lol
How do I get more varigation in My Philo- brazil is big and long And I can say happy but they have no varigation They have only varigation in older leaves When I put it near the sunlight it burn and make the leaves like crisp lol at least he's alive
You must have it in pretty low light. A plant that begins to lose its varigation is due to not getting enough light. I would suggest slowly, over the coarse of a couple weeks, move it to a brighter location if you have one.
I noticed my newer sprouts being a bit less vibrant since moving to a west-facing window. Could too much light be causing this brownish (not dry)discoloration?
I would think so. Too much sun can "washout" some variegated plants. Move it to a bright indirect light location and see if that makes a difference! Keep me posted.
Can someone help me please? I have a philodendron Brazil and it’s not dying, but it’s not growing at all. It drops a leaf like once a month, but it is alive. It has just stayed stagnant for me
My first guess is a water issue....either too much (or the soil stays wet too long) or not enough. My pothos plants do this when I forget to water it. It sends out a reminder by dropping a leaf lol. Also check for pests. I lost a brasil last year slowly to thrips. One or two leaves would become discolored (yellow patches) and then fall off.
@@EverythingPlants I think it might be due to underwatering. Surprisingly, unlike most, I tend to underwater a little and not overwater but I think it’s better to underwater. Thank you!
Out of all my philodendron (l only have 5 or 6) this one is my hardest. I’ve killed one already and my second one has one foot in the grave right now too..... just can’t figure it out. I’m not giving up though, I thought just yesterday that if I lose this one, I’m going to turn right around and buy another one!
Also depends on watering habits and your environment. If you tend to underwater plants, then it's probably best to use a plastic nursery pot as it holds in more moisture. If you over water plants then terracottas best because it helps absorb any evaporate water
The first two things that come to are bugs/pests and maybe not enough light. Look for small webs in between branches and leaves. This could be a sign of mites. If the plant is in a low light location just moving it to a bright one or vice versa. Hope this helps!
@@govindrathore6402 I would be careful and perhaps suggest no direct light. These are fairly thin leaves and I'd hate to see it get sun burnt. Instead provide consistent bright indirect light and this plant will do extremely well.
