She sounds incredibly intelligent for her age. Seeing that fault in Cunks logic and clearly pointing it out takes a lot more skill than one would realise. And of course, awesome mannerisms.

Some of that may be accent bias on your part. I don't know where you're from, but in the U.S. there's significant bias causing us to believe an English accent (non-cockney) means superior intelligence, while a Southern U.S. accent means inferior. Imagine all these kids have deep South accents and ask yourself if they're still brilliant.

I mean they probably did interviews with the kids first to find ones who would be engaging.

@@Avoidiac No, many children, in my area at least, struggle immensely with language comprehension and reading. I don’t expect much on the literacy area for my younger kids but sometimes I’m just surprised how close to nonverbal some of these kids are. They get a bit better as time goes on, of course, as all of us do.

These children are charming, but they're no more intelligent than children elsewhere, and we're not seeing the outtakes that weren't so amusing. I'd also say that these children are past day-care age. They're schoolchildren. I've seen plenty of shows on which American schoolchildren have given funny and engaging responses.

This clip is from a BBC mockumentary called _Cunk on Christmas_ - though that's merely one variant on a theme: e.g. they did a whole series called _Cunk on Britain_ and later a _Cunk on Earth_ plus a _Cunk on Shakespeare_ special)... and yes it is fantastic. The character actually began as a supporting role in about 2012 on the occasional _Screenwipe_ programmes written and presented by Charlie Brooker, better known these days (certainly in the US) as the creator of _Black Mirror_ but who previously was a satirical TV reviewer/spoofer. Philomena Cunk was the deliberately ill-informed 'investigative reporter' in their parodies of current-affairs journalism, who was so good she later got spun off into her own series. The genius of the premise is that Cunk goes around looking at the world in a very direct, oddly childlike way and describing it in an apparently authoritative manner that is almost always half a step 'off' from how things actually work - yet occasionally makes you stop and think (like wondering about how _do_ you "attach the words to the music" when singing), precisely because it's such an askew take on something seemingly obvious. I believe that normally the show is only half-scripted. That is, the hapless experts and other adults that she talks to are aware Diane Morgan is acting a part and that Cunk is going to behave this way. But they don't know in advance exactly what she's going to say, so they have to just try to roll with it no matter what she comes out with, and simply play things as straight as they can on their end of the conversation. I couldn't say for sure whether the children here were 'in the know' ahead of time, or whether they just pointed the camera at them and let them treat her seriously because that way you get genuine responses!
