As a teenage goalie in the 90s I used to trip guys cutting across the middle with diving poke checks all the time, on purpose, and never got called once. Sometimes I'd try to get the puck too, but the skates were the target. The worst part was my first goalie coach taught me to do it. That shouldn't be allowed, but Saros getting a tripping penalty for a pad save and not being able to get out of the way is a bit too far in the other direction.
For what it's worth, when they are talking about a "completed play" in the rulebook they're referring to when the whistle has been blown. They won't be calling a tripping penalty if it happens simultaneously with an offside for example. Only offside will be called, not the trip. Jesse is right when he says the rule is purposely left vague in order for there to be gray area in determining whether a trip will be called or not. "Getting the puck" and subsequently tripping someone will not, in and of itself, nullify a trip. However, there may be instances where a trip won't be called where the player has first gotten the puck. They don't want it to be black and white where no matter what if I trip someone it will be called. Should it be that way? I don't know. But, that's the way they want it to be called. And adding on to what Steve said about things that he's never seen before... exactly, things happen ALL THE TIME that never ever happen, or at least are very rare. It's impossible to develop a rulebook that encompasses any and all possibilities. And yet, the refs are left in charge of interpreting it all in a split second.
Did Adam call the Phoenicians pirates? Seafarers, yes. Pirates, no. Merchants and colony establishers, yes. Founders of Carthage, yes. It is why the Punic Wars are called Punic. It is the Latin term for the Phoenicians and that was Carthage’s heritage.
The thing with Formenton was that he was basically one of the few if not the only one not putting out a statement when the news broke about not being involved so it became obvious.
After doing some research, that chart is from a fan who made it in 2010...its from 52/53 through 09/10....however the maker indicates it does not have the data from 87/88 through 92/93. If you are curious i found this on the HF hockey boards after a google search. Id link it but youtube is dumb.
Tampa and Anaheim both dumped all their scandal team players. Philly had to know because they didn't extend Hart but they probably tried to trade him but couldn't get any takers. they do still have Mete. My thing is even if it was only 8 guys from the team more of them had to know and didn't say anything. 5 have been named so that means there is still 3 more players that we'll never know.
as a Devils fan I want Tom Fitzgerald, Devils GM, heavily scrutinized by the press and other fans. I want his job to come into question over this, I wanna know exactly what the logic and thought process behind signing two members of the 2018 WJC Canada team was when so much info was already publicly available, and by then we knew charges were coming eventually. McLeod was one of the few who didn't outright claim "I wasn't there" but just said "I'm cooperating with the investigation". To be fair though, Foote straight up lied publicly via his agent.
We need to be careful what we wish for when saying we want robot referees. Right now there could be a penalty called nearly every 3-4 minutes and the refs let it go. Look at how aweful reviewing offsides has made the game, with robo refs it will be worse.
I get that the NHL can't say anything about this specific case, but I would love for reporters to ask Gary what the NHL is doing to protect victims of SA. IIRC, the league doesn't have a SA policy, even after the Chicago coverup scandal. That should have been one of the first steps after the news broke.
I agree with steeve that at least a handful of teams knew about this scandel and didnt tell or didnt want to tell anyone and just are now acting surprised
My wife and I were watching and when Adam said he liked dark chocolate more we paused it, I turned to my wife and said he needs to be on a watchlist. Absolutely died when we started it back up just to hear Steve say the exact same thing 😂
I saw the title and Instinctively thought it was one of the many history channels I follow... boy was seeing you guys a surprise (still gonna listen of course lol)
Came from the pod on spotify to comment here. ADAM YOU SHOULD BE EMBARASSED (Ray Ferarro voice) who doesn't know Gretz was 50 in 39. Your other takes suddenly make a lot of sense.
Agree with others that maybe Dubé is legit going through mental issues, so this isn’t necessarily that big a screwup. On the other hand, there’s also the really extra cynical idea that Flames management said, “hey this sucks but don’t teams get flowers these days for seeming attentive to the mental health of their players? Why don’t we try and use that in this case so at least we can get some props as a good management team?” Ugh.
... then that heavy guitar riff. It would be pretty cool. And he has ties to the team because I think he gave them that championship belt that they hand out after each game.
That would be pretty neat. I actually saw Alter Bridge (the band that created the song, Metalingus, that would eventually become Edge's theme song) in Toronto, last year. That was a great show and a great crowd and Toronto has been always good to them in the few times they were in the area. I always wanted Alter Bridge to have some connection to hockey in some ways. I would think one of their songs, Take The Crown, would be a great sports song.
37:40 unless theres any evidence dube wasnt getting help from mental health professionals this comment seems pretty inappropriate. why cant both things be true? could this not have caused the mental health issues?
Justin Bourne on Real Kyper & Bourne put the reffing situation in an interesting way; the officials are always going to be disliked by at least 50% of the fans when 2 teams play. So, realistically, they do gain some sympathy - but, they should also be held to some accountability.
You guys would be the first people to criticize a team for doubting a player with mental health problems, you'd make a 20 minute segment out of it and probably demand heads
The trip after successfully playing the puck is rubbish since a high stuck on the follow through after playing the puck is not a penalty. Not very consistent.
On the topic of Breaking Bad: I just began watching the show a couple of weeks ago(just finished college so now I have time), I’m 3 episodes in, and yeah Skylar isn’t a great character
I’ve lived in Arizona my whole life and have been a fan of the Coyotes ever since I was a kid. Supported them through thick and thin, I honestly can’t take this anymore. Figure it out, or just move the damn team. This is abusive and I’m emotionally exhausted.
more relevantly PIT is 5 points back of the Flyers with 4 gammes in hand. They leap frog the flyers before the wildcard. These guys should really actually LOOK at the standings.
A lot of times I watch this show and your personalities have to carry the show. (Meaning the content is kinda meh) But this episode. I’m about 69% through it and everything has been fire/interesting. Love it.
Underrated player..Erickson ek. Dude is it my top performing center on my fantasy team. I also have Copp, Mctavish, zib, and sillanger as my other centers on the team.
When it was thought that names would be released / charges were coming in august 2023 during the off season, it was widely speculated that Carter Hart was deeply involved after he suddenly turned all his social media to private when this was big in the media.
What about Live Mic'd Up reviews. As in, we get to hear the discussion referees and the NHL have in real time to explain why they make the calls they do.
As someone who works in the criminal justice system, there are reasons longer than the scroll from the Emperors New Groove as to why this could and would take several months to a year if it goes to trial at all, however Jordan and a whole lotta work has made it a bit better. Emphasis on bit. It is important to remember not to speculate out of respect for the seriousness and horrific nature of this case.
Sorry Steve but this day and age I know far more younger men who know how to cook compared to younger women… it’s not at all how it use to be since majority women feel like they don’t need be able to do anything in a relationship besides be there and men should be happy for that and that the men should do everything for them
I know ya'll love to hate Binnington, but he just carried his team into the playoffs race. He's having a hell of a season even if his teammates are not.
Id feel bad for yotes fans if the team moves just from how much young talent on the team. Bright future. So if they get an expansion team, they realistically gotta restart making prospect pool
@@anthonyfaccaro7118 It's a thing because of money. Charles Barkley and Shaquille O'Neal thought it was boring. Calling the team "The Jazz" is pretty misleading. It's probably a great place to raise a Mormon family, if you enjoy being in the outdoors, and aren't interested in city night life. If you're a sedentary home body who doesn't drink it's probably a great place to live provided you're white. Otherwise, maybe not so great.
these athletic voter even making an "overrated" vote....it's simply dumb. You can make an overpaid vote, ok....what what the heck does "overrated even mean ? OVerrated by the media ? the fans ? the teams "internally (not that anyone gets a real look in there)" ? Simply stupid, negative poll ^^
1:12:18 As someone living in Raleigh, that doesn't surprise me at all. It's not a bad place to live per se, but it's kinda quiet. I imagine they'd have a lot more fun in Charlotte for the city vibe, a beach town for obvious reasons (even though our beaches aren't all that great) or even somewhere like Ashville for the mountain vibe Also thank you for pronouncing Raleigh correctly. "Rally" makes me cringe inside
Kakko to the Habs makes sense just because they LOVE the 2019 draft. Caufield, Dach, Newhook, Harvey-Pinard, and Struble are guys on there roster from that draft. Maybe I missed some and there are probably more within the organization.
First of all regarding the Flames situation, the org didn't say they didn't know there was an investigation but that they didn't know there was an immediate impending charge on Dube. Second of all, he could indeed been having mental health issues and under the care of mental health professionals as he knew his life was going to get blown up and he probably wasn't handling that very well. If a player comes to them saying they need time off regarding mental health issues they really have no choice but to accept it. And they obviously believed that was the real reason otherwise they never would have released the statement just to receive backlash for it a couple weeks later. And to address Jesse wondering why they gave a reason at all, I believe the org is doing its best to destigmatize mental health as it's been very open and supportive in helping their players in this matter. Whether Dube was lying or not, I think it's obvious that the Flames believed it anyway and this whole thing is way overblown.
Penguins are technically _even_ closer to a playoff spot than Jesse suggests at 54:22. Easy to overlook, but the Flyers (despite being Metro-3) are behind any of the Atlantic wildcard teams. That gives the Penguins 4-games in-hand, and puts them 5-points back of leaping past the wildcard entirely.
Alternative Solution from a retired nhl mascot: Adam can choose to buy Steve's beer OR take a chop from Edge on stage. All-Star Weekend is all about the spectacle, after all 😉. Love the content guys, keep up the great work!
Dube was having a horrendous season, and the Flames are a bit of a dumpster fire, If I was the Flames I wouldn't be second guessing the player if they told me they were having mental health problems.
Step one between now and next season towards to cup for the leafs build a tough mean big clear the front of the net playoff style defence i would keep Reilly McCabe Benoit the rest can go elsewhere
Nhl officials have a casebook that's updated every season. It's a companion book to the rule book. It's real life cases that have come up during the season. They have exceptions and whatnot, on how to interpret the rule using real situations that have come up. So the casebook would have a tripping section, with the rule number and specific cases of trippings that have happened and whether it's a trip or not. The specific play you guys are talking about could be added to the casebook next year with a clear "call or nocall".
Something not getting enough coverage is the AHL situation in Carolina (or lack thereof). Kochetkov has been sent to the Chicago Wolves during the All-Star break to get some reps in real games. We don't have an AHL team and there is no real development happening at that level for us. There is no team that is feeding off of our system and feeding into it, but multiple different systems and multiple coaches. I really fear that this is shortening our window since we really don't have guys on the way up to replace any who walk in free agency.
Having lived in London, I'm surprised the London police did anything even when given a second chance, there must have been a bunch of evidence sitting in parking lots between the two cruisers as they chit chat about it
Cal Foote's agent stated he was cleared before he was signed by NJ on Aug 9th. His brother Nolan is with the team. Utica needed D help. I honestly don't think there's anything nefarious there 38:38
