As someone who lives near Bayswater, the D3 has been a massive part of my childhood climbing over the plinthed loco at the Bayswater park. Lovely video!

My childhood memory too. Though, in my case it was D3 677, plinthed at Ringwood Lake. It was removed to Steamrail's yard some time ago. And later J516. I helped with the removal of this locomotive from Poulter Reserve at Greensborough, to the Yarra Valley Railway.

Based on your positive review I went and bought one D3 688 DCC with sound. Agree with you review that this is a high quality model that Phoenix should be proud of, excellent detail and paint quality and a great (and quiet) runner. On your 3 points, yes the coal is a bit shiny but I made a mask and coated with “dull coat” and it looks a lot better, the pulling power is ok - 4 auscision E cars on a flat track, but I don’t have any hills to test on. Unlike yours out of the box the “sound” level is adequate for a home/small layout - the speakers seem to be well sealed on this one. I checked the factory “volume” setting and CV 63 is set to 192 which is “max” so unless you change speakers that is what it is capable of. As a comparison I have reduced the volume on my Ixion J class to CV 63 = 100 to be suitable for my layout. Anyway a great locomotive and looking forward to the K class later this year.

G'day Will Great review mate. I love the D3 class. It's a beautiful loco. A suggestion for a video series. Go to the parks where steam locos are plinthed. And give a history of the loco class and loco itself. A-2 at Edwards park lake in Reservoir, D3 in Bayswater, J class at Donald, K class at Yarragon, D3 at Lismore and the few others around the traps. Would be an awesome series.

Stunning little model and know what? It's even better than the Ixion J Class!...It has a great bit of weighty feel to it (for a small model). Its crawl is awesome and has a clever thought out stay alive switch on the tender and a separate smaller wheel diameter front bogie you can swap in for tighter track and points - both things making it a much more practical little loco than the Ixion J. I love it. Even without a metal tender connector (which actually is a let down on the J). The 8 pin tender socket connector is not nearly as fiddly. Without any protruding wires..... yes there is no metal connector - but there is no fiddly metal connector fit (that comes apart) and therefore no wire drag either! Awesome effort by Phoenix. All IMO.

Nice video once again Will. I have a DC version which I just picked up on Sunday. Haven't run it yet. Pity about the lack of pulling power. Last time I saw a D 3 down here (Traralgon) it was really struggling to get up the Hearn's Oak hill on a wet afternoon, with a flat top T pushing from behind the last carriage. Received my D3 639 this morning (same version as yours) and have just watched your review, which was spot on. One thing that annoys me is the apparent tendency of Australian manufacturers to package the loco and tender separately. My Ixion J class came like this as well. Is this common? I like to store my locos in their original packaging, so separate blister packs means wear and tear on the connector every time the loco is given a run. By contrast, I have three Hornby tender locomotives (a Princess Coronation class, a Black Five and a J36 class), and they all came in a single blister pack with loco and tender already joined together. Not sure why this fairly sensible practice can't be followed by Australian manufacturers. I'm a noob to the hobby (2019), so maybe there is a valid reason for the separation. And just a comparison between the D3 and the Ixion J class; the headlight on the D3 has a more realistic output compared to the harsh white of the J class, and the connection between loco and tender was much better (as you pointed out). I guess we can be grateful for the steady improvements. Model railways have sure changed a lot since I was a kid in the 70's. Cheers from Michael
@WillJamesRailways
@WillJamesRailways 2 года назад
Thanks Michael! I agree that packaging isn't great, which is why i have the round house boxes now for transporting the steam locomotives so i don't have to seperate them! Agreed on the considerably better lighting on the D3!

Great review! I ended up buying one and I did notice the pullling power wasn’t the best (similar to my r class) as soon as you get a grade the wheels would slip pulling just 4 E coaches. Also noticed the whistle wasn’t the best but seeing as there’s only one running loco, the option to get a different loco to record is not really there. Nevertheless I still brought a second one hopefully this will solve my pulling power issue.

Hi Will, great video. The speakers are meant to have a piece of double sided tape attached underneath them to stop the sound bleeding out of the speakers however quite a number of them are missing this double sided tape. 13:43 Could it be the bogie not raising enough be casing the issue? I have the Oxford Rail Adams Radial and they suffered the same issue with gradients with the main source coming from the spring on the front bogie (for a 4-6-0, this would be bad but when its a 4-4-2T, it's a nightmare as the driving wheels are "lifted" off the rails). I've since solved it with trimming the spring by half. Maybe that's another reason that bogie with smaller wheels are included?

Great review, those issues would certainly be a pain for the $800 price point. But the model looks great and I’d love one but there’s no way I’d be able to justify the price, and I think I’ll hold out for a K class anyway. Also who made the 3D printed one? Good review Will, I am still considering purchasing one, the pulling power isn’t an issue for me but the low sound volume is not good especially for the price. I have seen a few other posts of how to improve the sound volume by better mounting the speakers. Did you try to increase the sound volume on the Lok decoder? Set CV31 to 16, then CV32 to 1 to allow the correct indexing then CV 63 is the volume control, it can be set up to the value of 192 as max, not sure what setting the factory used?
@terryflynn8830
@terryflynn8830 2 года назад
It is unwise to increase factory sound volumes. There is a chance you will damage the speakers. It is probably set to the maximum. Most quality sound speakers that fit in small H0 steam models are no louder than the D3 model. It's a good volume for a home layout.
@deanbrookes2609
@deanbrookes2609 2 года назад
@@terryflynn8830 I agree, the factory sound level should not be increased as you say. I should have worded my reply better - I was meaning “what is the sound level as per the factory setting?” by reading CV63. If it is a low level it may be an indication that the factory has tested with the speakers and found it should not be turned up loud as the speakers are under rated. I have purchased a number rtr dcc sound locos in the past months all with Lok V5s and all were set to max volume (CV63 = 192) from the factory, without noticeable distortion.

Hey again Will, just had my D3 688A arrive today and so far pretty impressed with how it looks but as with yours, the sound is absolutely terrible. Do you have a recording of your whistle with the original speaker setup, mine is ok in the quietest room for running sounds but the whistle just isn't audible? As you noted, I don't think it's right that such an expensive loco needs to be messed around with out of the box. Should have read your review first as I am now concerned that my E cars are going to be an issue for me as I do have an incline on the layout. Mine is so bad I am considering returning it as I am not keen to start pulling it apart brand new and somehow end up voiding the warranty.
@WillJamesRailways
@WillJamesRailways 2 года назад
Gday James! I might have one somewhere! Yeah once I glued up the speaker housing it made quite a bit of difference however. So far the only remedy to run the d3 with the e cars is remove the weight from the E cars (an absolute pain in my opinion) or yeah add weight to the d3 for better adhesion to the rail (which is my next project for it) Might be worth email sds although I know they’re not the best a replying to emails!
@jamescain662
@jamescain662 2 года назад
@@WillJamesRailways Thanks again Will, your glue solution worked pretty well and the sound seems much better now, but for a brand new expensive loco that is pretty poor quality. I will email SDS on it and see what happens, if we as a community of modellers accept this level of quality this is what we will get consistently. Next step is like you is adding some weight to the loco.

In respect of the Sound quality/Volume level with Australian Prototypes,both standard and 12 mm.My experience so far with most I own or have seen,is that the Volume available with the Factory installed ( Lok sound) is usually substandard compared to other Brand Decoders.Whether it is the speakers,or Decoder itself,I don't know.What I do know is,when I fit another Decoder brand with original speakers,the Volume available is about Double.And the motor sound stands out,as it should,not just a mix of vague sounds.I guess the result with the original speakers points to the Decoder being the problem.??

Will, just too add anotehr comment here on the pulling power, I saw a YT recently from McKinley Model Railway in the UK, and they add weight to their Locos to help with the pulling power. They have a "standard" weight for their locos to help with the puling power up a grade. Do you know of anyone who may have added some lead to the inside of the Loco, and did it help? Just a thought, I have had the time to pull mine apart and see if it is an option, as I have been in hospital. Thanks, and keep safe, Michael

The speakers have the same issues as other SDS stuff and they have crammed unnecessary things in to the tender that make retrofitting better speakers a nightmare. Not to mention the amount of details in the box I had to reattach to the loco itself. Overall, a pretty good model, but the engineering and packaging needs some work. Oh yeah, one of the builders plates on mine was glued on at a 45 degree angle, so QC is pretty shit too.

Thanks for that Kane! I’m sorry to hear about your model, that’s really bad, especially the builders plate! So far nothings fallen off mine yet so here’s hoping it doesn’t. Going off a lot of comments here, I think you’re spot on about the quality control!

I enjoy your various shows even though I model European HO. It's a shame that a lot of manufactures put so much effort into the look of their models and so little effort into how they run. A lot of new models run like toys. I suppose it's a result of building them in China with so little hands on to change the designs to something better when a problem is found.

Thank you very much Stephen! I agree, although some I guess lesser models from say Hornby have tremendous pulling power! It’s a bit of a mixed bag to what we get

I never had the sound issue. In fact I think mine was too loud for my liking...

Thanks for this. Reminded me to dig deeper into the foam to find the smaller wheel bogie that I thought I had missed out on in my 690 model. You missed that lots were rebuilds from Newport Workshops. As is now the home of Steam rail and is recorded on the builders plates of your 639. Pity they look unable to replicate the big loads they were capable of. Eg Nine coaches to Mornington in 1968 : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SeB0Rb_LJCY.html

I love all these models especialy the auzzie ones but the prices just make me so sad, it takes the fun away a bit, they're just so expensive and i dont think they need to be

I guess it’s just the way it is! If we had the population or popularity of the US or UK they would be no doubt cheaper! But smaller runs and smaller market means higher prices! But, I think it’s all worth it in the end!

Man… I wish I had a spare 600 plus to spare on models like this… Not exactly an entry level model!

Yes all that money for cheap speakers. Wow all that money for use on flat tracks what a Joke. No I will not be purchasing this model like your other member I will 3d print it.

The speakers are definitely a fault with the model, however I don't believe it's due to cheap speakers, as they appear to be the same speaker as the ESU 50321 sugarcube speaker (not counting the enclosure). However it does seem that they are not well sealed, which causes a lack of volume. OTOH weight is a different matter. The D3 does feel to be a reasonable weight for it's size. As far as I can see, just about everything that can be metal is metal. Even the ashpan doors underneath appear to be metal. What I have found though is that some rolling stock is far, far, far too heavy for use on graded layouts. Having several brass vehicles in my fleet, with interiors removed to reduce their weight, these are still at least double the weight (by estimate, not specifically weighed them yet) of many of the locos in my fleet; there's a reason PSM produced very heavy powered guards vans and baggage vans to haul their passenger sets! It also needs to be noted that many layouts have gradients that are closer to branchlines than mainlines; as in 1:30 and greater. From what I understand, AMRA Vic has grades of about 1:30 in several places on the mainline. The expectation to run single locos on extremely heavy trains over these grades is definitely asking a lot, when in reality those same trains would have either been double headed, used larger locos, or been banked up those grades. OTOH my D3 happily hauled my Auscision E car set, with the weights removed, around AMRA. Taking it further, I've run the D3 with 6 PL type cars from AustrainsNeo, plus an Auscision CE with the weight removed around AMRA Vic, and potentially could have added at least 1 more PL car to the mix. It should be noted that the PLs are substantially lighter than the E cars.

A 3 D printed model will pull even less, as the SDS model boiler and footplate are metal. The Auscission E cars are overweight.
