Creating the headstock break angle is not as difficult as you might think.
Join me in the workshop as where I show you my proces in as much detail as possible while we are making the Phoenix Rising guitar.
This is the first guitar building series coming from the new workshop so I'm very excited to show you around as I'm building this guitar and explain what I'm doing and more importantly, why and how I'm doing things.
For a brief history behind this guitar you can watch the following videos:

I have followed you on your channel for some time, and I have learned a great deal. I started building in 2016 as a hobby, but recently our family was hit with a horrific tragedy ending in the untimely and senseless death of a family member. I didn't think I would ever be able to build again. Knowing your story and watching you as you have been working through it has inspired me to start up again, beginning with a couple of "memorial" parts-casters. Thank-you so much for sharing your journey. You have no idea what it has meant to me. (I will be buying one of your phoenix sweatshirts in memoriam.)

Very informative, you seem like a really down to earth guy knowledgeable but humble thank you for your tips and taking us on the journey with you I've been watching for a year or two I've been hot rodding my basses and guitars for many years getting all set up to embark on my first build hand tools mostly I may add a table saw and band saw sometime this summer I hope life is treating you well.

One of these days I'm going to remember to drill the truss rod access before I glue on the fretboard.

Another great video. Good tips on drawing out the headstone break angle. Sound quality was good after changing the lavaliere mic.

Hi! Your voice is clearer with the new arrangement... I found it interesting that you made no attempt to set a specific headstock angle, you just went with the deepest you could get. Was that because you already knew according to the neck blank depth what it would be? I have heard arguments around the optimal break angle, for example, and PRS, Gibson and so on are very particular. I like the new clothing!
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars Месяц назад
Hi Sten, Thank you very much for the compliments. I'm not set on a specific angle. as you've noticed I tend to go by whatever angle I can get from the neck blank. Usually it ends up somewhere in-between 10-12 degrees. I've heard the argument for specific headstock angles and why one specific angle is better than the other. But I think, with so many things in guitar building, there are so many variables involved that are mostly outside the control of the builder/manufacturer that a relatively small difference in headstock angle is negligible. The discussion, as far as I'm aware, has mainly to do with the string tension on the nut... but when a player decides to use a different gauge strings for example, the entire argument for the particular headstock angle to get a certain tension on the nut goes out the window because the different string tension to tune the string(s). As long there is some angle to make sure the strings are properly seated in the nut slots it should be fine. And if not do what Fender does and use string-T's...

Hi, Daniel! Do you want to look for a certain angle of the headstock? The mic is nice for me.
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars Месяц назад
Hi Adrien, No I'm not looking for a specific angle. I know from experience that with the neck blank thickness I'm using I usually get a headstock angle between 10-12 degrees which is sufficient to seat the strings in the nut slots with enough tension.
@Sabbra
@Sabbra Месяц назад
what is the headstock final angle? Great job!
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars Месяц назад
Hi Sabbra, Thank you. To be honest... I don't know exactly I havent measured it. It should be around 11-12 degrees I guess. The headstock angle is sufficient to have the string seated correctly in the nut with proper tension.

You might have said this before, but where did the name Unquendor come from?
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars Месяц назад
Judging from your 'picture/icon' I think you might like this... Unquendor is neo-Quenya for "Hollow Land", and is a translation of the often perceived etymology of Holland, "Hollow land". I'm a big fantasy film and literature fan from Holland (The Netherlands) and when I was looking for an online username I came across "Unquendor" in a Tolkien Quenya dictionary. It seemed fitting to me and used it ever since.

What degree do you use for your break angle on the headstock…?
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars Месяц назад
Hi David, I'm not using any specific angle. I'm usually aiming for somewhere between 10 to 12 degrees. It depends on the thickness of the blank.
@davidwellings2783
@davidwellings2783 Месяц назад
I would guess that’s from both experience and personal preferences! Certainly not as steep as Gibson! 🥰🥰😊😊🎸🎸🥁🥁

question from the ignorant: could you have made the first straight cut with a chop saw rather than the band saw, to make the straight cut easier?
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars Месяц назад
A chop saw usually can't make a cut at this angle without a special jig or something. It can usually cut from 90 to 45 degrees. The headstock angle is usually around 10-12 degrees. A cut like this is much easier on the bandsaw, even by hand.
