I'm making a bound ebony fretboard for the first time and decided it needs orange binding. Which I attempt to make myself of course.
Join me in the workshop as I try to make two fretboards at the same time and play around with some orange stain and a vacuum bag.
This is the first guitar building series coming from the new workshop so I'm very excited to show you around as I'm building this guitar and explain what I'm doing and more importantly, why and how I'm doing things.

Hey Daniel. Most definitely the natural ebony fret boards you have …the natural ones for me is the easy I would go.

I’ve used black paper phenolic. Also known as “ebonol” since the 90s. It’s a nice substitute for Ebony when you want a totally black and smooth fretboard. I just started a bass neck using Richlite. Looks very similar. I also use various types of wood.

In my opinion I think the orange strips are going to look amazing !! I would personally only apply them down the sides of the fretboard. Across the top and bottom would be a touch too much . BTW ... That orange color looks amazing !! Maybe you can build a guitar in the future using that orange stain on the intire body !? Orange and black is one of my favorite color schemes!! Great video !! Thanks for all the hard work !!

Second guessing yourself is all part of the decision making process. I do it all the time. 😊 Eventually, the second guessing gets sorted out. Just ordered the coffee cup and t-shirt.

For an ebony substitute I use African Blackwood, which is in the rosewood family.

Best episode yet, I think, very enjoyable. You should continue the strip across the bottom of the fretboard, it looks much better and the 45 degree cuts are not so hard really, you can do it. Also could you have just made one routed fretboard and then copied directly to the second, using it as a template.

Hi Shawn, It's always hard to tell as I'm spending a lot of time shooting these videos. If I wasn't filming I think I would spend somewhere between 100 - 150 hours on a guitar on average.

Based on the weight it seems to be a little less dense. But of course the density of Ebony also varies from one piece to another.

Iv tried the fake ebony richlite and didn’t like it at all . I was cutting frets by hand then and it ruined my fret slotting saw . Just wasn’t nice to work with at all horrible dust from routering it etc . Definitely never use it again
