Yes Kim this video was much better than the last one. The compositions were better and the pictures looked sharp compared to the last video. The last video was a windy day though. Nice work though on the finni as we used to call it. I was never there at autum though. Nice colour starting to pop. Best time of year for sure.

Kim, I believe you're shooting with your z camera. In the menu settings you can choose regular, AP-C, 4x5, 1x1 and 16x9 aspect ratios. I never had this flexibility on previous cameras and it is something that I have found can really bring out ones creativity to get it right in camera. All of a sudden, I'm shooting and enjoying 1x1 photos. Some stunning photos you made here. Good luck. Jim

Hi Kim , i really find woodland difficult , you got some lovely autumnal images here , i recently shot an image in a square crop on my 5Dmkiii , thinking i could change my mind in post if i wanted, turns out you cant. I actually did not like the 1:1 crop on the image and wanted more a 4:5 but i was stuck with the 1:1 . Its a lesson i learned that while its nice tool to have in camera to frame up the image maybe but in hindsight i was shoot natively to give me more options in post.

Kim - i had a thought about your aspect ratio dilemma. You could use a piece of cardboard or paper, make a cutout to the ratio you want and size it to the screen on the camera. You can put the paper on the back and compose. If you cut the overall size to match the screen, put the cutout in the middle. Just a thought....
@neilsmith7829
@neilsmith7829 4 года назад
I enjoyed the colours and the movement in the water Kim, especially the final image. I have read the comments below about your intention to not pass by possible images. There is a fine line to be drawn between the "it doesn't cost more to shoot more images" mindset and the ability to "see" a composition. While I would never suggest passing by a possible composition, it is a question of degree, I have a friend who comes back from half a day's photo trip with hundreds of images. You have seemed to me Kim to have a natural ability to see the composition. The use of a tripod encourages slowing down and considering what you are taking: with water of course, several exposures at different shutter speeds are advisable so that a choice can be made later as to which is the best effect.
@kimgrantphotography
@kimgrantphotography 4 года назад
It's all about balance I guess. Taking shots you think will work well but trying not to over shoot. Slowing down and enjoying nature is what it's all about.

Round about the same time you were enjoying the autumnal riot of colour I had the pleasure of enforced isolation through Track and Trace. This focused the mind and I had to get all creative with my limited view on the world so I filmed an episode of autumn unfolding in my garden. Now that we are all in Lockdown for a month maybe you could do something similar to inspire and stop us all going stir crazy?

If there is on photo hacker tip to pass on from someone who has dealt with unpredictable climate photography, it is to always pack a plastic shopping bag or bread bag or two in your camera pack, for many reasons, but mostly for "wet" shots. covering your camera and cutting a whole for your lens front to peek out has saved me many times. I thought of this forty years ago as a teen when shooting a rugby game when it started to lightly rain. The best photo I got earned it to get published the next morning in the local sports front page. All thanks to a plastic bread sack I had put over my Nikon FE and 135mm lens

I am new into photography, so my question is when you find a subject/ image, do you take several pictures and change your settings say in manual mode or any of the other modes? and pick out your favorite later while editing?
@kimgrantphotography
@kimgrantphotography 3 года назад
No I set my camera to the settings I want to shoot at and take one image. I will take more if shooting a moving object such as crashing waves so I have a choice of action shots. Sometimes I will also shoot the same scene using filters and take one image with and one without so I can choose my favourite. 90% of the time it's choose the settings and take one shot though 😊
